Die Internationale Liga der Antiquare hat Amazon in ... "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

Also fr Gebrauchtbcher jetzt.

Daraufhin passierte das hier:

But Amazon underestimated the camaraderie of fellow booksellers, and was surprised to find that within days of sending the notices, no less than 600 booksellers from nearly 30 countries had decided to take a "vacation" from the service pulling more than three million titles.

Soon after the London Book Fair said it was pulling out of a sponsorship deal with AbeBooks, and cited its decision to cut off some countries as the reason.

MWAHAHAHAHA. Tsja, wie das so ist. Wenn man Menschen wie Dreck behandelt, dann machen sie ihre Geschfte lieber woanders.

Yoda: Netanyahu-Kushner-Trump Control Loop Unravels Positive Changes in Middle East Loom Large "IndyWatch Feed War"

The Unraveling of the Netanyahu Project for the Middle East

These represent major unravelings of the Netanyahu project for the Middle East, but most significant are two further setbacks: namely, the loss of Netanyahus and MbS stovepipe to Trump, via Jared Kushner, by-passing all Americas own system of checks and balances.  The Kushner stovepipe neither forewarned Washington of coming mistakes, nor was Kushner able to prevent them.

Saudi Arabia to be broken up; Israel must choose between Netanyahu and Tel Aviv

Here is what the Pentagon had to say on this: Karmas a bitch, as Saudi Arabia may be dismembered for what it did to Jamal Khashoggi, and Mohammed bone Sawman (MBS) may be forced to end the Yemen war and lift the Qatar blockade, while the U.S. may find new partners in Turkey and Iran after the Global Currency Reset.

Midterm Elections: Corporate Democrats Versus The Monster They Empowered "IndyWatch Feed War"

Tuesdays midterm elections put Democrats back in control of the U.S. House while strengthening the Republican hold on the Senate. The big picture is that, two years after Donald Trump replaced the GOPs old arsenal of racial code words and dog whistles with blaring white supremacist bullhorns, majorities of U.S. whites are firmly committed to an openly white nationalist political program under the leadership of a billionaire huckster who speaks their vile language. Although the GOP remains a minority party -- Democrats outpolled them in House races by 7 to 9 percent...

The Patent Industry Wants Incitations and Feuds, Not Innovation and Collaboration "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Patent Lawyers' Tears

Summary: The litigation giants and their drones keep insisting that theyre interested in helping scientists; but sooner or later the real (productive) industry learns to kick them to the curb and work together instead of suing

THE US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has fallen prey or has been compromised at the hands of the litigation lobby. Patently-O has just promoted IPO indoctrination videos and Gene Quinn (Watchtroll) carries on with his patent propaganda (its pretty shallow and easy to debunk, albeit its time-consuming and brings attention to the original).

If companies/people learn to get along with each other, these lawyers will become redundant and their occupation mothballed. From what we can gather, litigation-wise the US changed for the better; the number of patent lawsuits fell sharply, OIN has just added another member to its non-aggression (no litigation) pact [1, 2, 3, 4], and this major case between Nokia and Blackberry came to an end without a clear winner. Only the lawyers won (money, legal bills) and the lawsuit basically got dropped (not even a settlement). As...

Armistice Day A hundred years ago "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Denmark was not part of WWI, except in the lucrative profiteering role, so WWI is not really covered much in history classes or at least, it was not when I was a kid. I have tried to make up for this, but I feel that I am not as knowledgeable of WWI as I should be.

One thing I know, however, was that it was an absolutely horrible war, with large numbers of young men getting killed. Reading books about life in the trenches, it becomes clear what an absolute nightmare it was to be there.

I dont think I have ever come across anything that illustrates this better than this recording.

Even knowing that peace was just a minute away, the armies kept fighting, until silence comes, as the agreed upon time is reached.

Why? It is unfathomable to me why anyone would keep trying to kill other human beings once it has been agreed that there will be an armistice. Yet, the sound clip clearly shows that people kept fighting to the very end.

A hundred years ago, the guns fell silent, and people hoped it would be the last great war. This unfortunately wasnt the case, as everyone knows, and as Putin, Trump, Brexit and other factors are de-stabilizing global politics, it is easy to fear that another great war is in the making.

#Aachen, German territory: Demo Against the shift to the right and state repression "IndyWatch Feed War"

Two trials against anti-fascist / anti-racist activists will soon take place in Aachen. We call for a solidary accompaniment of the trial and a demo against the shift to the right and repression.

Originally published by Antirepressionsgruppe Aachen. Translated by Hambi Bleibt. Translation slightly edited by Enough is Enough.

Note: Enough is Enough is not organizing any of these events, we are publishing this text for people across the US and Europe to be able to see what is going on and for documentation only.

The dates at a glance

One trial will take place following the events in the Frankenberger Viertel in March 2017. There was a quarrel with two organized neo-Nazis. Shortly thereafter, two people were arrested, they were accused of civil disorder and bodily injury. The public prosecutors office promptly fantasized about the danger of absconding and put the two on remand for more than two weeks. Now they are charged.

The second trial is an appeal hearing in connection with a spontaneous demonstration by Aachen in the summer of 2015. The occasion was the racial police murder of Mitch Henriquez in The Hague. The demo was brutally ended by the police on the Aachen market square, ten people were detained. Of these, four were arbitrarily selected, who were indicted in April 2018 with various allegations. After three absurd litigation days peppered with contradictions and memory gaps or obvious false statements by the cops, three people were acquitted. Only one person was sentenced to 90 daily sentences, but the prosecutors office is trying hard to get even more punishment: they appealed.

People being hunted in Chemnitz, arson attacks on refugee shelters, attacks on unwelcome people in the open, thousands of people dead in the Mediterranean and an unknown but very high number in the Sahara, daily deportations to supposedly safe countries of origin, constant tightening of asylum law, racist police controls, racist agitation by politicia...

Its Time To Take On The Capitalist Class "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Neoliberal House Democrats will collaborate with Trump unless grassroots pressure prevents them. Now that the midterm election is over, what can we do to preempt that collaboration? We need to shift from a short-term electoral to a long-term community and union focus, and shift from preaching to the choir to expanding our base. To build the multiracial working class coalition it will take to win in the face of climate crisis and neofascism, we must make a real commitment to solidarity and lift up a vision of a transformed society with democracy and dignity for all. Only we ourselves can save us.

EUs Proposed Link Tax Would Still Harm Creative Commons Licensors "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The Creative Commons, the international non-profit devoted to expanding the range of creative works available legally, summarizes how the EU's proposed link tax would still harm Creative Commons licensors. The proposed Copyright Directive legislation entered the final rounds of negotiation back in September, retaining the problematic articles that raised hackles earlier this year, notably articles 11, 12, and 13. The Creative Commons discusses the current stat of article 11, known informally as the link tax.

Article 11 is ill-suited to address the challenges in supporting quality journalism, and it will further decrease competition and innovation in news delivery. Spain and Germany have already experimented with similar versions of this rule, and neither resulted in increased revenues for publishers. Instead, it likely decreased the visibility (and by extension, revenues) of published contentexactly the opposite of what was intended. Just last week a coalition of small- and medium-sized publishers sent a letter to the trilogue negotiators outlining how they will be harmed if Article 11 is adopted.

Not only is a link tax bad for business, it would undermine the intention of authors who wish to share without additional strings attached, such as creators who want to share works under open licenses. This could be especially harmful to Creative Commons licensors if it means that remuneration must be granted notwithstanding the terms of the CC license. This interpretation is not far-flung. As IGEL wrote last week, [...]

EPO Outsourcing Rumours "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Summary: The EPO advertises jobs in Prague and Lisbon; this leads to speculations less than a year after Antnio Campinos sent EU-IPO jobs to India (for cost reduction)

THE volume of patent news definitely seems to have decreased in recent months. Were not sure why, we can only speculate and say that journalism in general is on the demise.

The European Patent Office (EPO) is nowadays playing if not paying the media for publicity stunts (not journalism). Antnio Campinos, like his predecessor, comes up with more tricks for enabling software patents in Europe. Were meanwhile trying to figure out what goes on recruitment-wise (HR is still led by Bergot).

The EPO does not operate there, at least not yet, and back in the days people entertained the possibility of EPO expanding to Romania for cost savings. One reader asked us: Have you seen the job offers on LinkedIn?

EPO job offers are in themselves news because theres a hiring freeze in effect for years to come (waiting for examiners to leave or retire).

The reader asked: Does the EPO have branches in Prague and Lisbon?

If any EPO insiders/friends are aware of something, please do get in touch.

It was almost exactly one year ago that Antnio Campinos was involved in an outsourcing scandal; he tried hard to suppress debate about it.

If anyone out there can send us information regarding Prague and Lisbon EPO jobs, well be able to clarify. Nobody else is likely to cover it. The EPO does not operate there, at least not yet, and back in the days people entertained the possibility of EPO expanding to Romania for cost savings. Does Campinos have plans he isnt sincere about? Theres no disputing the fact that under Campinos the EPO is even less transparent than it was under Battistelli.

17 years after China entered the WTO, China still has not opened its economy to foreign competition in so many areas "IndyWatch Feed War"

Several key members of President George W. Bushs trade policy team, which advocated for a free market agenda, increasingly view the Trump administrations China agenda in a sympathetic light. While disagreeing with Trumps protectionist instincts on several key points, the Bush-era trade hands argue that the broader economy has changed and that the concerns Trump is addressing are real.

Many of the advocates for more open trade with China a decade ago argue now that Beijing hasnt done enough to liberalize its economy. Reactions like the Trump administrations, they say, were inevitable and Beijing should recognize that reality.

The United States played the decisive role in facilitating Chinas entry into the World Trade Organization, said Henry Paulson, who served as Treasury secretary under President George W. Bush, in a speech Wednesday at a Singapore event hosted by Bloomberg. Yet 17 years after China entered the WTO, China still has not opened its economy to foreign competition in so many areas.

By Sean Higgins
Washington Examiner

Chinas obstinance is simply unacceptable said Paulson. Trade with China has hurt some American workers. And they have expressed their grievances at the ballot box. So while many attribute this shift to the Trump administration, I do not, he added. Chinas current leadership needs to recognize the changed context in the United States.

Many feel Beijing just hasnt lived up to the promises it made almost two decades ago, says Gary Hufbauer, nonresident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. The former U.S. officials expected China to adopt market-oriented policies on a much faster pace than what has occurred. Such expectations have been disappointed, making former officials more willing to sympathize with Trumps aggressive approach, Hufbauer said.

For example, Bob Zoellick, who was U.S. Trade Representative during George W. Bushs first term, told the Chinese news outlet Caixin in September that he doesnt agree with Trumps views on trade in general, but that Chinas policies are causing an understandable backlash.

I think its important to recall that when China came into...

The Indicted and the Dead "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

To be law-abiding and breathing: These are, generally speaking, two commendable qualifications for a candidate to meet when seeking public office. But, as our republic occasionally reminds us, they are not requirements.

For the indicted and the dead have been elected before, and likely will be again. This past election was no different, providing several notable examples of criminal defendants being elected to office, as well as a congressman who sued an elderly constituent for defamation. And, of course, this list would not be complete without the dead pimp who won a race in Nevada.

While it is unusual for such candidates to win elections, it is not unheard of, particularly in Congress. Analysis found that at least 25 sitting congressmen since 1987 have been elected despite being under indictment.

Rep. Chris Collins (R), 27th District of New York: Indicted

Despite being under indictment on federal insider trading charges, incumbent Republican Chris Collins narrowly defeated his Democratic opponent Nate McMurray by 2,910 votes, or 1.1 percent of the vote.

According to prosecutors, Collins learned of failed drug trials involving Innate, an Australian biotech firm, then immediately called his son to tell him to sell $1.4 million in company stock. Collins was captured on video making the call during a June 22 congressional picnic on the White House lawn. At the time, Collins was already the subject of an ethics investigation because of his dealings with Innate.

Radical Muslim Group Operates Commune in California "IndyWatch Feed War"

Posting from the Facebook page of Na'il Karim, owner and leader of the Miraj compound)Posting from the Facebook page of Nail Karim, owner and leader of the Miraj compound)

Clarion Intelligence Network has learned that a radical and militant Islamist group is operating a commune in California.

The Miraj compound, located in Dunlap, California, is home to a group of radical Islamists connected to the extremist Black nationalist Muslim group Al-Ummah.

The compound attracts a steady stream of affiliated individuals and families who camp on the compounds property. Many who visit the compound for retreats or year-round stays are convicted felons who have been released from prison and who converted to Islam in prison.

The group has many similarities to Jamaat ul-Fuqra (Community of the Impoverished), a radical Islamist group in the U.S. aligned with the Pakistani radical cleric Sheikh Muhiyudden Ali Shah Gilani. Gilani has been linked to the 2001 beheading of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. (Fuqra also goes by the name of Muslim of America.)

In addition to similarities in ideology, members at the Miraj compound as well as the Fuqra compounds are flogged for committing a crime. Members and guests of both groups practice shooting with weapons, however at Miraj, bows and arrows are often used (versus guns) so that their neighbors remain unaware of their military exercises.

The Miraj compound is much more advanced than any of the Fuqra compounds. It is evident that a significant amount of money flows through this camp, which allows the group to have a lake,  gardens, herds of lambs and goats, and  an on-site butcher shop where members skin, cut and sell the animals for halal meat. Members of the compound live off the land and off the grid, avoiding paying taxes and the like.

They call for other black Muslims to do the same.

A Fleet of Pressure Washers Powers This Interactive Public Fountain "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Public art installations can be cool. Adding in audience interactivity bumps up the coolness factor a bit. Throw civic pride, dancing jets of water, music, and lights into the project, and you get this very cool pressure washer powered musical fountain.

The exhibit that [Niklas Roy] came up with is called Wasserorgel, or water organ, an apt name for the creation. Built as part of a celebration of industry in Germany, the display was built in the small town of Winnenden, home to Krcher, a cleaning equipment company best known for their line of pressure washers in the distinctive yellow cases. Eight of the companys electric pressure washers were featured in the Wasserorgel, which shot streams of water and played notes in response to passersby tickling the sturdy and waterproof 3D-printed keyboard. The show was managed by an Arduino with a MIDI shield, which controlled the pressure washers via solid state relays and even accepted input from an anemometer to shut down the show if it got too windy, lest the nearby [Frau Dimitrakudi] be dampened.

The video below shows how engaging the Wasserorgel was during its weeks-long run in the town market square; theres also one in German with build details. And while we cant recall seeing pressure washers in public art before, we do remember one being used as the basis of a DIY water-jet cutter.

World leaders gather in Paris to mark 100 years since WWI Armistice "IndyWatch Feed War"

Some 70 world leaders gathered at the famous Arc de Triomphe in the French capital, Paris, on Sunday to mark one hundred years since the end of World War One.

Commemorations in Paris had been scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. local time (1000 UTC), the time that the Armistice signed by the Allies and the Germans on November 11, 1918, went into force. However, the proceedings were slightly delayed, with leaders arriving too late for the exact moment.

The large number of countries represented in Paris reflects the widespread nature of a conflict in which an estimated 37  million people, including 10 million soldiers, lost their lives. The city of Paris itself was a key objective in the war, with the Allies fighting successfully against German efforts to capture it in 1914.

The solemn ceremony, held in rainy conditions, featured schoolchildren reading moving messages written by soldiers in eight languages, as well as musical performances, including by French-born Chinese-American cellist Yo-Yo Ma and West African singer Angelique Kidjo.

Patriotism, not nationalism

French President Emmanuel Macron held an address in which he described the joy at the end of the conflict, but also remembered the horrors and millions of dead and wounded.

In his speech, he called the nationalism that underlay the war a betrayal of patriotism. He appealed for friendship and dialogue between the nations to create a peaceful future.

The old demons are rising again, Macron said. We must reaffirm before our peoples our true and huge responsibility.

Fraud detectives arrest former PNG Registrar of Companies "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Detectives from the PNG National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate have reported the arrest of the former Registrar of Companies and chairman of Securities Commission.

In a statement, Fraud Director Matthew Damaru said detectives arrested and charged Alex Tongayu, aged 40, on November 8th, 2018, with one count of forgery and one count of uttering.

Detectives claimed that Tongayu, who is from Walumi village, Hela Province, had forged the signature of the then Minister for Trade and Commerce, Richard Maru, on National Gazette number G441.

Tongayu allegedly appointed himself as duly appointed by the National Government as the Registrar of Companies and Chairman of Securities Commission.

On June 7th, 2017, after the National Gazette was printed, Alex Tongayu produced the gazette to the Investment Promotion Authority (IPA) and was installed as the Registrar of Companies and the chairman of the Securities Commission, stated Damaru.

When he committed the offences, he was acting in the position.

Then Minister for Commerce and Trade, Mr Richard Maru, denied appointing Tongayu to the position and made a public advertisement in the Post-Courier stating that Alex Tongayu had appointed himself and referred the matter to police for investigation.

The National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate, after receiving the complaint from Mr Maru, conducted an investigation into the allegation.

The managing director of the IPA also made a complaint to the NFACD on the same matter.

Tongayu was invited to the NFACD office at Konedobu where he was interviewed.

After the interview and completion of arrest procedures, he was taken to Boroko Police Station where he was placed in the cells.

He will appear before the Waigani District Committal Court next week to answer to his charges.

Detainees in Houthi prisons are being treated inhumanely, Jaber said, adding that what was happening in Houthi-controlled areas is the work of militias that have competing centers of power.

Jaber is the most senior member of the Houthi militia to defect to the government side since the Yemeni war began in 2014.

Jaber arrived in Saudi Arabia with his family after fleeing the capital Sanaa, Moammer al-Iryani, information minister of the Yemeni government, said on Saturday.

Confirming the longstanding allegations that the Houthis were being aided by Iran and other countries, Jaber said Yemenis reject the foreign domination of the country.

Jaber said the Houthis dominance was in its final days, adding that the Yemeni people have rejected Houthi injustices and are waiting for an opportunity to get rid of them.

Jabers defection comes against a backdrop of continued clashes in the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, a key facility that Yemeni government forces backed by a Saudi-led coalition are seeking to retake from the Houthis.

Fighting has flared in Hodeidahs east between the Houthis and government forces backed by air strikes and helicopters.

The battles here are turning into street fighting, a government official said on Saturday.

Government forces on Saturday recovered control of the May 22 Hospital as part of the offensive.

Amnesty International, the international human-rights watchdog group, has accused the Houthis of deliberate militarization of the hospital after they deployed snipers on its roof.

World leaders hold solemn ceremony in Paris to mark WW1 Armistice centenary "IndyWatch Feed War"

Some 70 world leaders gathered under rainy skies at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris on Sunday for a solemn ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

U.S. President Donald Trump, Russia President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and dozens of monarchs, presidents and prime ministers from Europe, Africa, the Middle East and beyond joined French President Emmanuel Macron to mark the moment guns fell silent across Europe a century ago.

The commemoration is the centerpiece of global tributes to honor the 10 million soldiers who were killed during the 1914-18 war and the moment the Armistice, signed in northeastern France, came into effect at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918.

Brigitte Macron makes quick coat change before heading to Armistice Day event

As Trumps convoy was making its way up the Champs Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe, a bare-breasted protester from the Femen radical feminist group ran towards his motorcade, coming within a few meters, before being apprehended by police.

Photographs of the incident appeared to show that she had the words fake peacemaker scrawled across her body.

In a glass canopy at the foot of the triumphal arch, built by Emperor Napoleon in 1806, the leaders stood for the solemn ceremony. The last to arrive was Russias Putin, who shook hands with Macron, Merkel and then Trump, briefly giving the U.S. leader a thumbs up.

Macron stood to attention as a military band played the Marseillaise, the French national anthem, before walking through the rain to inspect troops. He then took his place under the Arc while cellist Yo-Yo Ma played a movement from a Bach symphony.

WEEKEND OF TRIBUTES

In a rare public display of emotion by the leaders of two world powers, Macron and Merkel held hands on Saturday during a poignant ceremony in the Compiegne Forest, north of Paris, where French and German delegations signed the Armistice that ended the war.

The conflict was one of the bloodiest in history, reshaping Europes politics and demographics. Peace, however, was short-lived and two decades later Nazi Germany invaded its neighbors.

On Sunday afternoon, Macron will host the inaugural Paris Peace Forum, which seeks to promote a multilateral approach to security and governance and ultimately avoid the errors that led to the outbreak of World War One.

Merkel said in a statement the forum showed that to...

Armistice Day & the Resurrection of the Old Lie "IndyWatch Feed War"

In a profoundly dishonest society, the shared grief of World War I is one of the few things we all know the truth of. One of the few things we are all honest about. Because it's important. Because it's a wound too deep to ignore, a betrayal too lasting to be forgiven. The Great War was sold to the British public as a just war. Men were sent over to France and Belgium to curb "German aggression and Imperial ambitions". Every generation since has known that to be an absurd lie. That lesson could be vital to our survival.

Miguel Amors: Anti-capitalism as a struggle for space "IndyWatch Feed War"

The essay shared below continues our (Autonomies) exploration of Miguel Amors analyses of capitalism, along with that of other May 68 writers, Jaime Semprun, Amedeo Bertolo and Eduardo Colombo.

A basic principle of anti-developmentalism says that a society full of capital is an urban society, which is why a society without capital must be an agrarian society. From this perspective, a liberated urban space would therefore have to be a de-urbanized space. This does not mean the disappearance of the city, which has already been accomplished by the conurbation, but the positive supersession of the city-country opposition and the radical rejection of the decay of both realities into an amorphous sludge. The recovery of the city, the axis of the project in which urban struggles must be inscribed, is paradoxically a process of ruralization.

Urban struggles must reveal a new subject, a new proletariat that does not deny by affirming, but affirms by denying; a proletariat that does not seek to universalize the working class condition, but rejects it outright. If it does not question labor itself, it does not question capital: real anti-capitalism is anti-workerist. In order for a collective subject, or, what amounts to the same thing, a class, to constitute itself, it must create its specific space from which it can join forces against the enemy class. The space of capital, populated with wage workers, motorists and consumers, is not adequate for this purpose. It must be transformed, and to do this the first thing that must be done is to deliver it from the grasp of the market. It must cease to be a space of labor, of consumption, of circulation, of leisure, etc. In the new liberated space, its inhabitants must achieve a sufficient degree of autonomy (with regard to food, clothing, shoes, education, transport, health, self-defense, information, etc.). Autonomy is the precondition for the negation of capitalism, the anti-capitalist class, to be able to exist.

Today is 11/11/11 (2+0+1+8=11) And What Is The Significance Of This Date "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

By Luke Miller,

Today is 11/11/11 (2+0+1+8=11) and a portal for transformation and the bridging of new ideas. In this case 11 is to the power of 3 and 3 is the holy trinity of The Father (God), The Son (Jesus), and The Holy Spirit. But the trinity also has its suppressed feminine counterpart The Mother (The Virgin Mary), The Daughter (Mary Magdalene), and The Holy Sophia.

Currently there is a split taking place on Earth. One side is toxic masculine and feminine with fear driving division, exploitation and hatred. The other side is divine masculine and feminine with love driving unity, equality and acceptance. If you look at the news, you can see that this is not just a spiritual observation. But a real life divide that is widening daily. Never in recent times have things been so split between groups. So much hatred being spewed out and encouraged by those under the spell of fear. This leads us to the belief that we are not responsible for our own suffering. When the reality is those who trigger us our just mirrors. On the other side of this we have genuine light work happening on a scale not seen before. This is evident in collective consumption choices that are driving industry into new directions. Also simple acts of kindness and open expressions of love which were less prevalent just 6-7 years ago.

The thing about this split is there is a small group on one side and a small group on the other side. Then many in between who have work to do. That is why this year has been so hard. Accelerated karma is no joke. It causes immense suffering over a short period and is incredibly hard to deal with. But this is a reaction to our intentions and if we choose love and want to step into the divine, we need to clear out all the toxicity. In the end it is worth it and there is a bright light at the e...

Despite efforts of the Egyptian Army and security forces, the ISIS terrorist group is still calable of carrying out terrorist attacks in North Sinai.

According to ISIS-linked media, over the past week, the terrorist gorup has carried out 4 attacks in the region killing 6 soldiers and destroying 2 vehicles. 2 of the attacks reportedly took place in the city of Arish and in the village of Zoweid. 5 Egyptian soldiers were reportedly killed in these attacks.

In October, the Egyptian military announced that since the start of its operation against ISIS in North Sinai, the army and security forces had eliminated over 450 terrorists, including ISIS members. However, it seems that this was not enough to stabilize the situation in the province. ISIS still keeps a large presence there. One of the most problematic points is the border area between Gaza and Egypt.

Disturbing Images Reveal How Plastic Pollution Affects Turtles "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

by Caroline Power,

Almost one year to the day that my Sea of Plastic post went viral, I was called to assist a rescue of baby sea turtles washing ashore in a mat of Sargassum seaweed. Sargassum is a pelagic seaweed that drifts on ocean currents in tropical and temperate seas. It is a crucial habitat that provides food and shelter to more than 240 species of fish, crustaceans, sea birds, commercially important species such as tuna, and even sea turtles. In the open ocean, sargassum is an oasis. When it washes ashore, it can trap the animals that call it home, burying them alive.
When I arrived, I was horrified. The seaweed was filled with plastic, much of it from Guatemala and Honduras. It was easy to identify the well known products used in this region. Coke bottles, Pepsi labels, single use sachets of shampoo, Clorox bottles, Aguazul water bags, crocs childrens toy, and so many plastic bags. Bags of every shape and color; not shopping bags but ones used for packaging consumer goods.

Up to 40% of the global plastic production is used in packaging. Coca-Cola, PepsiCo., Unilever, Nestl, and Procter and Gamble are responsible for much of the plastic packaging found in our oceans.

In total, volunteers saved 18 recently hatched sea turtles from the plastic. They were taken to a local rescue center where they are all alive and well and waiting to be released. Sadly, not all of the turtles found were alive. A necropsy was performed on one of the dead sea turtles that washed ashore. Eight of the thirteen objects found in its digestive tract were plastic. The turtle was less than two weeks old.

Let us not allow these turtles to have died in vain, to allow this plastic disease to continue. It is a global problem that requires a global solution. Each and...

Watch Iranian Students Refuse to Step on American Flags "IndyWatch Feed War"

An Iranian student jumps over the American flag to avoid stepping on it and desecrating it (Photo: video screenshot)An Iranian student jumps over the American flag to avoid stepping on it and desecrating it (Photo: video screenshot)

A common tactic of the Iranian regime is to affix American flags to the floor at the entrances to various buildings in Iranian universities so that students, on their way to class, must desecrate the flag and, by extension, America, to get in.

Students are often used to deliver the regimes message to the Iranian people and the world at large. When the tactic fails to work, the regime resorts to fake pictures. Especially in light of Americas new sanctions on Iran, the regime has increased its anti-America propaganda machine.

However, the following videos out of Kermanshah, Iran at Razi University show students refusing to participate in the regimes anti-Americanism ruse. They can be seen going out of their way to avoid stepping on the American flag.

The clips, which went viral in the first hours after they were published, have embarrassed the Iranian regime.

Albert Camus and the Absurd Life Extension and the Big Picture "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

This paper explores Albert Camuss notions of the absurd in The Myth of Sisyphus and draws correlations with the movement for indefinite life extension and the big picture of existence.

Calorie vacuums playing in the mud, isnt that what we are when it comes down to it?  We guess our way through much of life, trying not to spend too much time thinking about how trivial it all may or may not be so as to see about keeping the levels of despair down, waiting for our turn on the chopping block We try to make sense of this life but in the end, can never fully convince ourselves that we have because we never fully do. That challenge is a mountain whose top hasnt been seen yet.

People are drawn to understand what the most sensible things to do with life are, or as Albert Camus writes the meaning of life is the most urgent of questions. Its a ballpark question. People thirst to make sense of their being, to understand whats going on, for meaning, to track down and engage the most profound implication. Is thirst proof that water exists, as Gaston Bachelard says? Even rocks mean profound things, and we are self-aware supercomputers in a space filled with variables and has no known walls. It is very improbable that there is not a fundamentally profound implication within such circumstances.

How might we ever make sense of our existence? Masses of people are desperate with this hope of another life one must deserve and often take an irrational leap, as Camus says, to some great idea that will transcend it, refine it, give it a meaning, and betray it. Many rest on the hope that theyll land a job they really love and can shine in someday but dont put serious effort into figuring out what that would specifically be let alone work to make it happen.

People routinely try to correct each other on that issue by saying that work, not hope, builds dreams, yet when they hope that reincarnation, or living a good life, or an evolutionarily consequential life will save them in the eyes of the hypothetical eternal chroniclers, nobody is out there correcting them. You must think it all the way through, work to figure it out and achieve an understanding of it. Hoping and leaping is a distraction from this duty.

Camus explains the leap to us:

I shall merely analyze here as examples a few themes dear to Chestov and Kierkegaard. But Jaspers will provide us, in caricatural form, a typical example of this attitude. [] He is left powerless to realize the transcendent, incapable of plumbing the depth of experience, and conscious of that universe upset by failure. Will he advance or at least draw the conclusions from that failure? He contributes nothing new. He has found nothing in experience but the confession of his own impotence and no occasion to infer any satisfactory principle. Yet without justification, as he sa...

Linux Cryptocurrency miner leverages rootkit to avoid detection "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Researchers from Trend Micro spotted a new cryptocurrency miner that leverages a rootkit component to hide its presence on the infected systems.

Cryptocurrency malware continues to be a privileged choice for crooks and the number of victims is rapidly growing.

Cryptocurrency miners are easy to detect due to the saturation of resources on the affected systems, but experts from Trend Micro spotted a new miner that leverages a rootkit component to hide its presence.

Even if the malware slows down infected systems abusing of their resources, the administrators will not be able to detect what process is causing it.

We recently encountered a cryptocurrency-mining malware (detected by Trend Micro as Coinminer.Linux.KORKERDS.AB) affecting Linux systems, reads the report published by TrendMicro.

It is notable for being bundled with a rootkit component (Rootkit.Linux.KORKERDS.AA) that hides the malicious process presence from monitoring tools. This makes it difficult to detect, as infected systems will only indicate performance issues. The malware is also capable of updating and upgrading itself and its configuration file.

The experts speculate that the infection vector could be an unofficial or compromised plugin such as a media-streaming software.

Once installed the initial executable (Trojan.Linux.DLOADER.THAOOAAK) will download a file from Pastebin that is a shell script. The file is saved as /bin/httpdns and a scheduled task is created to run /bin/httpdns every hour. The shell script is executed. /bin/httpdns contains a shell script that connects and downloads another base64-encoded text file.

The process will allow to download and execute a series of shell scripts that ultimately install the miner and then a rootkit to hide its presence.

Surfing Wolf (Sunday Sermonette) "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

It's not easy to find a sermonette topic to blog about, but this one is based feeding one's soul. I have been trying to figure out how to do that (precisely) and I'll tell you that feeding my soul won't happen at Fredd's Aunt Sally's house, where near lethal food is dished out every day.
"When of thy Earthly goods thou are bereft,
And from thy slender store, two loaves alone to thee are left,
Sell one and with the dole,
Buy hyacinths (or take a trip to the surfing competition) to feed thy soul."
The White Wolf Mine should be complete in a month from now (6 weeks after the promised date), and morbidly over the original bloated budget.

Still, it's going to be a nice spread.

There is Thanksgiving coming up. Then I'm going to Hawaii for two weeks while the hovel is being finished to soak up the sun and attend the last to segments of the triple crown of surfing (championship - Van's World Cup and the next week is Billabong Pipe Masters). Some of the old hands who've been hanging around this blog for a while will note, "LL, you go to the surfing championships almost every year at this time".

And that would be generally true. Most times I bring kids and grandkids but not this time. The house situation is stressful and surf's up (I hope). I've been a homeless vagabond since the lease was up on the house I lived in and if I'm going to be somewhere, a five star resort in Hawaii is better, right? I need to throttle back and pamper myself. That's my solution to soul feeding because life's a beach. I like to swim. I like the ocean. I...

U.S. Secret Service Warns ID Thieves are Abusing USPS's Mail Scanning Service Krebs on Security

A year ago, KrebsOnSecurity warned that Informed Delivery, a new offering from the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) that lets residents view scanned images of all incoming mail, was likely to be abused by identity thieves and other fraudsters unless the USPS beefed up security around the program and made it easier for people to opt out. This week, the U.S. Secret Service issued an internal alert warning that many of its field offices have reported crooks are indeed using Informed Delivery to commit various identity theft and credit card fraud schemes.

The internal alert sent by the Secret Service on Nov. 6 to its law enforcement partners nationwide references a recent case in Michigan in which seven people were arrested for allegedly stealing credit cards from resident mailboxes after signing up as those victims at the USPSs Web site.

According to the Secret Service alert, the accused used the Informed Delivery feature to identify and intercept mail, and to further their identity theft fraud schemes.

Fraudsters were also observed on criminal forums discussing using the Informed Delivery service to surveil potential identity theft victims, the Secret Service memo reads.

The USPS did not respond to repeated requests for comment over the past six days.

How Singles Day has helped Alibaba ascend on an AI-powered cloud in China "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

The technology and innovation that Alibaba has developed to serve the needs that arise from Singles Day have allowed Alibaba to expand into a variety of services, including Alibaba Cloud, logistics, and artificial intelligence.

Within minutes of the clock striking midnight on November 11 this year, consumers across China will be racking up billions in purchases on Alibabas e-commerce marketplaces. Alibaba engineers and employees watching the transaction numbers on big screens will whoop as the figure instantly crosses the hundred million yuan mark, then zooms into the billions.

As the orders start to roll in, the companys proprietary cloud computing platform Alibaba Cloud will, at its peak, process hundreds of thousands in transactions and payments per second. Robots in the automated warehouses of Alibabas logistics arm Cainiao will begin sorting and packing the orders that come in, readying them for the battalion of trucks, scooters and millions of deliverymen that will send an estimated 1 billion packages to their rightful owners within days of November 11.

For Chinas largest e-commerce firm, Singles Day is not just its most important shopping event of the year. It is also the day that the Alibaba pushes the boundaries on its technology and services, stress-testing its technology systems during the worlds largest shopping festival that grows in scale every year.

BBC Drama: Strangers and Brothers by C.P.Snow #4/13 "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Wikipedia

Strangers and Brothers is a series of novels by C. P. Snow, published between 1940 and 1970. They deal with among other things questions of political and personal integrity, and the mechanics of exercising power.

All eleven novels in the series are narrated by the character Lewis Eliot. The series follows his life and career from humble beginnings in an English provincial town, to reasonably successful London lawyer, to Cambridge don, to wartime service in Whitehall, to senior civil servant and finally retirement.

The New Men deals with the scientific communitys involvement in (and reaction to) the development and deployment of nuclear weapons during the Second World War. The Conscience of the Rich concerns a wealthy, Anglo-Jewish merchant-banking family. Time of Hope and George Passant depict the price paid by clever, poor young men to escape their provincial origins.

Snow analyses the professional world, scrutinising microscopic shifts of power within the enclosed settings of a Cambridge college, a Whitehall ministry, a law firm. For example, in the novels set in the Cambridge college (a thinly veiled Christs), a small, disparate group of men is typically required to reach a collective decision on an important subject. In The Masters, the dozen or so college members elect a new head (the Master) by majority vote. In The Affair, a small group of dons sets out to correct a possible injustice: they must convince the rest of the college to re-open an investigation into scientific fraud. In both novels, the characters strongly resist letting in the external world, whether it be the press, public opinion, the college Visitor, or outside experts.

The books were adapted by the BBC into a 13-episode television series, which began airing in January 1984. The series starred Shaughan Seymour as Lewis, Sheila Ruskin as his mentally troubled first wife Sheila and Cherie Lunghi as his second wife Margaret. Other actors of note who took part in the series include Anthony Hopkins, Nigel Havers, Peter Sallis and Tom Wilkinson.

Robot Never Misses Leg Day "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

We have heard bipedal walking referred to as a series of controlled falls, or one continuous fall where we repeatedly catch ourselves, and it is a long way to fall at 9.8m/s2. Some of us are more graceful than others, but most grade-schoolers have gained superior proficiency in comparison to our most advanced bipedal robots. Legs involve all kinds of tricky joints which bend and twist and dont get us started on knees. Folks at the Keio University and the University of Tokyo steered toward a robot which does not ride on wheels, treads, walk or tumble. The Mochibot uses thirty-two telescopic legs to move, and each leg only moves in or out from the center.

Multi-leg locomotion like this has been done in a process called tensegrity, but in that form, the legs extend only far enough to make the robot tumble in the desired direction. Mochibot doesnt wait for that controlled fall, it keeps as many downward-facing legs on the ground as possible and retracts them in front, as the rear legs push it forward. In this way, the robot is never falling, and the motion is controlled, but the processing power is higher since the legs are being meticulously controlled. Expecting motion control on so many legs also means that turns can be more precise and any direction can become the front. This also keeps the nucleus at the same level from the ground. We cant help but think it would look pretty cool stuffed into a giant balloon.

Some people already know of tensegrity robots from NASA, but they may not know about the toolkit NASA published for it. Okay, seriously, how did knees pass the test of evolution? I guess they work for this jumping robot.

Polish president and PM set to join fascist march in #Warsaw on #PolishIndependenceDay "IndyWatch Feed War"

Poland: Tens of thousands of nationalists and fascists from all over Europe plan to march today (November 11) in Warsaw to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Polish state independence. The march, issued with a last-minute ban by the Mayor of Warsaw, will finally go ahead after a court overturned the Mayors decision.

Originally published by Freedom News. Written by zb. Image above: Last years Independence Day march in Warsaw, the celtic cross banner reads: White Europe of brotherly nations.

After late-night negotiations yesterday between the fascists and Polish President Andrzej Duda the march will be joined by both him and the countrys PM. The governments decision to join the march is unprecedented: it is the first time that Polish governmental officials will partake in an event organised by extreme right groups promoting racism and totalitarian state ideas.

In February 2018, National Radical Camp, one of the groups involved in organising todays march protested in front of Warsaws Presidential Palace demanding the President sign the so-called Holocaust Law  a controversial bill which outlaws blaming Poland or Polish citizens for crimes committed during the Holocaust. They shouted slogans such as Stop Jewish occupation of Poland and Go back to Israel.

On last years march multiple racist banners were present, including celtic cross and black sun symbols and slogans Europe will be white or depopulated, and White power, Ku Klux Klan.

European Council President Donald Tusk delivering a lecture Lodz, Poland.

European Council President Donald Tusk on Saturday lashed out at Polands ruling politicians, likening them to contemporary Bolsheviks who threaten the countrys independence.

Tusk, seen as a likely contender in Polands 2020 presidential election, was speaking in the city of Lodz on the eve of the 100th anniversary of Polands independence after 123 years of being partitioned between Prussia, Russia and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The former Polish prime minister paid homage to Marshal Jozef Pilsudski, who led the victory over the Bolsheviks Red Army in 1920, and ex-Polish President Lech Walesa, who challenged Polands Soviet-backed communist rule during the 1980s.

Jozef Pilsudski was facing a more difficult situation than we have today when he was conquering the Bolsheviks and in fact, defending the Western community against political barbarians, Tusk said in a gathering of intellectuals and politicians.

Walesa had a more difficult situation when he was conquering the Bolsheviks in a symbolic way, when he was bringing out the European, the freedom, the national values in us. But he managed, he continued.

Why shouldnt you be able to defeat the contemporary Bolsheviks? Tusk said to great applause.

Morning Prayer for Sunday, November 11, 2018 I am not so important after all "IndyWatch Feed War"

When I think of all who have gone before me, I realize that I am only one, not very important, person. What happens to me is not so very important after all. I have learned to be more outgoing, to seek friendship by going at lest halfway, to have a sincere desire to help. I have more self-respect now that I have less sensitiveness. I have found that the only way to live comfortably with myself is to take a real interest in others. Do I realize that I am not so important after all?

Meditation for the Day

As you look back over your life, it is not too difficult to believe that what you went through was for a purpose, to prepare you for some valuable work in life. Everything in your life may well have been planned by God to make you of some use in the world. Each persons life is like the pattern of a mosaic. Each thing that happened to you is like one tiny stone in the mosaic, and each tiny stone fits into the perfected pattern of the mosaic of your life, which has been designed by God.

Prayer for the Day

I pray that I may not need to see the whole design of my life. I pray that I may trust the Designer.

********************************************

Third Step Prayer (Alcoholics Anonymous)

God, I offer myself to Thee-
To build with me
and to do with me as Thou wilt.
Relieve me of the bondage of self,
that I may better do Thy will.
Take away my difficulties,
that victory over them may bear witness
to those I would help of Thy Power,
Thy Love, and Thy Way of life.
May I do Thy will always!
Thank you, God, Amen!

****************************************

Lord, I ask your pardon, I have sinned again

Lord, I ask your pardon, I have sinned again. This, alas, is what I am capable of doing on my own! But I abandon myself with confidence to your mercy and your pardon, I thank you for not allowing me to sin even more grievously. I abandon myself to You with confidence because I know that one day you will heal me completely and, in the meantime, I ask you that the experience of my misery would cause me to be more humble, more considerate of others, more conscious that I can do nothing by myself, but that I must rely solely on your love and your mercy. Amen.

State Tells Christian Filmmakers: Make Same-Sex Marriage Films or Spend 90 Days in Jail "IndyWatch Feed World"

Two Christian filmmakers appeared before the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Paul Tuesday to challenge Minnesota state law which they say illegally forces them to produce and create films expressing messages that contradict their core beliefs.

AUBs Outlook Team Thinks Homophobia is an Opinion "IndyWatch Feed World"

Last week, I saw a couple of homophobic articles published in AUBs Outlook paper being shared by ex-AUBites including one of Outlooks ex-Editor in Chief. One of the articles tackles the elusive search for a gay gene and encouraging therapy to treat homosexuals.

I waited a bit to see how Outlook will respond, only to find out today that they issued a pathetic statement claiming that they included 6 articles that dealt with homosexuality topic that was chosen by the editorial team to be discussed, and that three articles expressly defended and stood in support of the LGBTQ+ community after last weeks incident, while the others expressed mixed opinions and perspectives.

I have no idea whos running the paper these days but its disgraceful to see Outlook publish such opinions and not even offer an apology to the LGBTQ+ community. Several AUBites and Outlook ex-staff members have launched a call to rebuild AUB Outlook and condemn the actions of the current board following homophobic articles and I join them in their call to reform Outlook.

In times where most countries are embracing differences and legalizing marriages among homosexuals, its shameful to see a leading and prestigious institution like the American University of Beirut allow such articles.

It is important to note that Outlooks bylaws support our stance. Article 5.9 clearly states that published materials may not promote hate speech towards an individual or group on the basis of attributes such as gender, ethnicity, religion, race, disability, or sexual orientation. In addition to that, this years editorial decisions go against all points of the international journalistic code of ethics: seeking truth, minimizing harm, acting independently, and being accountable.

Muslim Women Win Office But Still Losing at Mosques "IndyWatch Feed War"

Even though Muslim women are winning political offices, they are still losing at mosques as they continue to face alienation in the theological sphere. They still face restrictions within their own community that limits their engagement, including entering mosques through side entrances and sitting behind a partitions or walls with unequal accommodations and access to speakers and the collective conversation.

On Tuesday, November 6, 2018, Rashida Tlaib, Illhan Omar, Hodan Hassan and Safiya Wazir all won their bids for office during the 2018 U.S. midterms. However, despite their achievements they still face a stunning misogynistic patriarchal barrier at home.

A powerful solar storm likely detonated dozens of US sea mines during the Vietnam War "IndyWatch Feed World"

An analysis of recently declassified US military documents confirms suspicions that, during the late stages of the Vietnam War, a powerful solar storm caused dozens of sea mines to explode. It's a stark reminder of the Sun's potential to disrupt our technological activities in unexpected ways. As part of Operation Pocket Money, the US Navy planted a series of Destructor sea mines near strategic ports off the coast of North Vietnam. A few weeks later, on August 4, 1972, crew members aboard US Task Force 77 aircraft suddenly observed a batch of explosions south of Hai Phong. In all, some 20 to 30 explosions were documented in just 30 seconds. Another 25 to 30 patches of muddy water were also observed, indicative of further explosions. It was a bizarre occurrence, as there was no reason why the mines should have gone off. Almost immediately, US officials began to contemplate extreme solar activity as the cause, as revealed in newly declassified US Navy documents. New research...

By downplaying and misrepresenting our environmental crisis, David Attenborough and the BBC have generated complacency, confusion and ignorance.

Knowingly creating a false impression of the world: this is a serious matter. It is more serious still when the BBC does it, and yet worse when the presenter is the most trusted man in Britain. But, as his latest interview with the Observer reveals, Sir David Attenborough sticks to his line that fully representing environmental issues is a turn-off.

His new series, Dynasties, will mention the pressures affecting wildlife, but Attenborough makes it clear that it will play them down. To do otherwise, he suggests, would be proselytising and alarmist. His series will be a great relief from the political landscape which otherwise dominates our thoughts. In light of the astonishing rate of collapse of the animal populations he features, alongside most of the rest of the worlds living systems, and when broadcasting as a whole has disgracefully failed to represent such truths, I dont think such escapism is appropriate or justifiable.

It is not proselytising or alarmist to tell us the raw truth about what is happening to the world, however much it might discomfit us. Nor do I believe that revealing the marvels of nature automatically translates into environmental action, as the executive producer of Dynasties claims. Ive come to believe it can have the opposite effect.

For many years, wildlife film-making has presented a pristine living world. It has created an impression of security and abundance, even in places afflicted by cascading ecological collapse. The cameras reassure us that there are vast tracts of wilderness in which wildlife continues to thrive. They cultivate complacency, not action.

You cannot do such a thing passively. Wildlife filmmakers I know tell me that the effort to portray what looks like an untouched ecosystem becomes harder every year. They have to choose their camera angles ever more carefully to exclude the...

Hundreds of Birds Dead During 5G Experiment in The Hague, Netherlands "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

About a week ago at The Hague, many birds died spontaneously, falling dead in a park. You likely havent heard a lot about this because it seems keeping it quiet was the plan all along.

However, when about 150 more suddenly died bringing the death toll to 297 some started to take notice.

And if you are looking around that park you might have seen what is on the corner of the roof across the street from where they died: a new 5G mast, where they had done a test, in connection with the Dutch railway station, to see how large the range was and whether no harmful equipment would occur on and around the station.

And harm happened, indeed. Immediately afterward, birds fell dead from the trees. And the nearby ducks that were swimming seemed to react very oddly as well; they were simultaneously putting their heads underwater to escape the radiation while others flew away, landing on the street or in the canal.

Again, almost at the exact same time that those animals died, near the station, Holland Spoor was tested with a 5G transmitter mast.

If they all got heart-failure with an healthy body, no signs of any virus, no bacterial infection, healthy blood, no poisons found etc. etc. The only reasonable explanation is, that it is from the new 5G Microwaves having an huge effect of all birds hearts! It heavily resonates with certain ERRATIC PULSED Microwaves (millions per second!) which can be proven to have biological effects on organs! Am not kidding here!

Some people assume Microwaves at lower wattage can not harm because it does not cook you that very flawed logic is what they want you to repeat over and over! This Award Winning Magic Trick Completely Violates the Laws of Physics "IndyWatch Feed World"

Magic tricks are something people across the globe enjoy. Whether you can do your own or simply watch there is no denying how truly entertaining they can be.

A video has recently been circulating of a wonderful magic trick that has the internet in awe. This trick starts off simple but goes in a direction most would have never expected. This trick was created by Eric Chien and he even went so far as to receive an award for it. It was marked the Best Trick at the International Federation of Magic Societies during the Magic World Championship not too long ago.

On his Youtube channel Chien wrote as follows when posting his performance of this trick:

I am really excited to share my Fism Act with everyone, I know you guys have been waiting for a while now.

Though winning Fism is a big accomplishment, it is also just the beginning for me. Ive been behind the scenes for most of my magic career and its finally time for me be on stage performing. I have lots of things planned out right now and I cant wait to show you guys what I can do! Thank you, everyone, for the support and love, and please like and share my act, it will help me greatly!

In this video, you will see that what starts out as a simple card trick of some kind turns into something truly mind-blowing. Without explanation, everything changes and objects literally begin flying across the table. It is quite clear that Chein is headed somewhere amazing with this gift he has. While he is just a magician and his tricks are exactly that, tricks they are still carried out so flawlessly that it is hard to believe they are not actually really happening.

To see this amazing magic trick please take a peek at the video below. What do you think about it? I for one cannot wait to see more of what this young man has to offer the world of magic.

Japan is not yet the land of robots "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

Japanese hotels and banks are, by global standards, heavily overstaffed despite the countrys demographic crunch. Most supermarkets have not embraced the automated checkouts common elsewhere, nor airlines self-service check-ins. The offices of Japans small and medium-sized enterprises are among the most inefficient in the developed world, chides McKinsey, a management consultancy.

Japan has an elaborate service culture, which machines struggle to replicate. Japanese customers, especially the elderly, strongly prefer people to machines, says Yoko Takeda of Mitsubishi Research Institute, a think-tank. Employment practices make it difficult to replace workers. And while gimmicky robots abound, Japan struggles to develop the software and artificial intelligence needed to enable them to perform useful tasks, says a report by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the cockpit of Japans post-war miracle. So while the reception at the robot hotel is automated, seven human employees lurk out of sight to watch over customers and avoid glitches. Robots still cannot make beds, cook breakfast or deal with a drunken guest who will not pay his bill.

Here is more from The Economist.

Hackers Stole Income, Immigration and Tax Data in Healthcare.gov Breach, Government Confirms "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Hackers stole income, immigration and tax data in Healthcare.gov breach, government confirms

Hackers siphoned off thousands of Healthcare.gov applications by breaking into the accounts of brokers and agents tasked with helping customers sign up for healthcare plans.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) said in a post buried on its website that the hackers obtained inappropriate access to a number of broker and agent accounts, which engaged in excessive searching of the governments healthcare marketplace systems.

CMS didnt say how the attackers gained access to the accounts, but said it shut off the affected accounts immediately.

In a letter sent to affected customers this week (and buried on the Healthcare.gov website), CMS disclosed that sensitive personal data including partial Social Security numbers, immigration status and some tax information may have been taken.

According to the letter, the data included:

  • Name, date of birth, address, sex, and the last four digits of the Social Security number (SSN), if SSN was provided on the application;
  • Other information provided on the application, including expected income, tax filing status, family relationships, whether the applicant is a citizen or an immigrant, immigration document types and numbers, employer name, whether the applicant was pregnant, and whether the applicant already had health insurance;
  • Information provided by other federal agencies and data sources to confirm the information provided on the application, and whether the Marketplace asked the applicant for documents or explanations;
  • The results of the application, including whether the applicant was eligible to enroll in a qualified health plan (QHP), and if eligible, the tax credit amount; and
  • If the applicant enrolled, the name of the insurance plan, the premium, and dates of coverage.

But the government said that no bank account information including credit card numbers, or diagnostic and treatment information was taken.

Adding insult to injury

Robots will soon match humans in creativity, emotional intelligence "IndyWatch Feed War"

As if we didnt already have enough to worry about when it comes to artificially intelligent machines being able to perform many tasks faster and better than humans can, potentially stealing our jobs in the future and presenting what some technologists worry is an existential threat to humanity, now it appears AI will soon be able to match humans at being, well, human, too.

An Australian AI expert, Toby Walsh, said during the Festival of Dangerous Ideas in Sydney recently that he thinks AI will learn and possibly match human traits like creativity, emotional intelligence and adaptability in less than 50 years. And Walsh a Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence at UNSW Sydney predicts robots will be as smart as humans by the year 2062.

But dont worry about them ultimately presenting some sort of threat or something as drastic as potentially wiping out mankind, he adds. Weve been rather mislead by this idea that the robots are going to take over, Walsh told Time Out. The robots have no desires of their own, they do exactly what we tell them to. Im much more worried about incompetence than malevolence that well get the machines to do something and we havent thought carefully about how its going to interact with our complex world Healthcare, transport, how we manufacture things, how we educate ourselves, how we go out and play its going to touch almost every aspect of our lives.

Its interesting to think about this other side of increasingly smarter machines and to ask questions about the fundamental nature of consciousness and emotion. These right-brain characteristics of being human, things like creativity and emotion and the like we like to think they will save us or somehow set us apart from machines that are radically smarter, faster and better at us in other things. But if they eventually get to be as creative as us to complement their already stellar analytical capabilities, what then?

When Walsh says hes worried, though, its not about what the machines will do. Its us hes worried about. Mankind, he says, needs to do a better job of creating machines and AI systems that are aligned with our values now.

On the Attack against the FSB in Russia : Including a Statement from the Anarchist Who Carried It Out "IndyWatch Feed World"

A year ago, the Russian Federal Security Servicethe FSBinitiated a wave of repression, arresting and brutally torturing anarchists in order to force them to sign false statements admitting to participating in a supposed terrorist group invented by the Russian authorities. The ensuing crackdowns put tremendous pressure on anarchists around Russia; you can learn more about the cases and solidarity efforts here. Today, a young Russian anarchist died in an attack on the FSB headquarters in Arkhangelsk. The FSB has gotten its wish, bullying young Russians into carrying out bombings rather than engaging in public organizing. Below, we present a rough translation of the initial report from Russian anarchists, including the young mans personal claim of responsibility.

The deceased, Zhlobitsky Mikhail Vasilyevich, also known as Valerian Panov, was a student at the Arkhangelsk Polytechnic University. He was 17 years old.

As we have previously emphasized, we dont believe that individual attacks on specific authority figures will suffice to abolish the institutional power of the state and capitalism. But the Russian state has left precious few alternatives for those who desire a means of bringing about positive change. At the conclusion of a week that has seen a tremendous upswing in authoritarian repression and fascist violence around the world, from Pittsburgh to Brazil, it is time for us to discuss how we can collectively respond to the escalating violence of the state and its fascist supporters.

It also bears mentioning that the FSB is directly descended from the KGB, showing the continuity of oppression between state socialism and capitalism. Under Putin and Stalin, under Kennedy and Trump, the machinery of state tyranny remains the same.

We respectfully bid farewell to this young man who took a stand against repression, torture, and deceit, doing the best he could with the few options that were available to him....

Classic Aussie Crime Drama: Water Rats -S05 E06 Play It Again "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Season 3 Episode 5 appears to be missing

Water Rats is an Australian TV police procedural broadcast on the Nine Network from 1996 to 2001. The series was based on work of the men and women of the Sydney Water Police who fight crime around Sydney Harbour and surrounding locales. The show was set on and around Goat Island in Sydney Harbour.

Water Rats premiered on 12 February 1996, and ran for six seasons and 177 episodes. Colin Friels and Catherine McClements were the original stars of the series and were instrumental in the shows early success. They both departed the show in 1999. In later seasons, Steve Bisley, Aaron Pedersen and Dee Smart became the shows main stars.

For the sixth and final season in 2001, the show concentrated more on the cops personal lives rather than just focusing on the crimes committed. The Nine Network cancelled the show after six seasons. Executive Producer Kris Noble blamed escalating costs for the cancellation. However, Bisley and Smart had also just quit the show, and the series had already been suffering a ratings battle following the departure of Friels and McClements in 1999.

Poland risks controversy on independence centenary "IndyWatch Feed War"

Poles mark a century of independence on Sunday amid tensions in the deeply polarised country over the prominent role that marginal far-right groups gained in shaping the main state parade.

Chaos engulfed plans for the state military parade in Warsaw just days ahead of the centenary, as far-right groups vowed to use the same route and timing for their controversial annual independence day march.

Last years edition of that march drew global outrage when some participants displayed racist and anti-immigrant banners and slogans. Its organisers include the National Radical Camp (ONR), a group with roots stretching back to an anti-Semitic pre-World War II movement.

AFP/File | The 2017 edition of the independence day march in Warsaw drew global outrage

Groups of this nature are marginal in Poland.

In a bid to avoid a similar debacle on the centenary, the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) government and allied President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday announced the state military parade, insisting that it had legal priority.

But the far-right groups refused to back down after a Warsaw court overruled a separate ban imposed by the capitals mayor citing the risk of violence and hate speech.

The PiS government spent Friday in a tug of war with far-right groups over the scheduling of the two events. The sides confirmed late Friday that they would coincide.

PiS Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has vowed that authorities would act decisively against any public display of fascist symbols or slogans, something that is banned by law in Poland.

There is a clear red line between patriotic behaviour and nationalistic or chauvinistic (behaviour), or neo-Nazis, he told the foreign press corps on Thursday.

Collision course

Underscoring Polands growing isolation in the European Union since the PiS took office in 2015, no senior delegations from fellow EU states are due to show up for the centenary coinciding with the Armistice that ended World War I.

The government has put Poland on a collision course with the EU by introducing a string of controversial judicial reforms that Brussels has warned pose a threat to judicial independence, the rule of law and ultimately to democracy.

EU President Donald Tusk, a former liberal Polish prime minister, will be the blocs only senior representative in Warsaw on Sunday and his visit comes amid speculation that he may return to run for president in 2020.

The media are in a lather, in particular, naturally,  12 000 miles away media people.

There are two graphic Pics in the ether with Courtney Laws and a line through the "last foot", LoL

So clearly on that evidence one has him "onside" but the kicker, he doesn't move the line does

Seriously people, Laws broke the laws and the two pics are revealing in one matter that puts that red line into file 13.
Take your pick,  both photos show Laws at least a meter in front of all his team mates who are lined up with military precision where the line should be drawn in both pics, behind the last foot albeit a player off his feet in the ruck but still the defining bit of the rules as I understand them.

A $4 Ultrasonic Theremin Looks Cheesy on Purpose "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

We dont think [bleepbit] will take offense when we say the poor mans theremin looks cheesy after all, it was built in a cheese container. Actually, it isnt a bad case for a simple device, as you can see in the picture and the video below. Unlike a traditional theremin, the device uses ultrasonics to detect how far away your hand is and modifies the sound based on that.

There are also two buttons one to turn the sound off and another to cycle through some effects. We liked how it looked like a retro cassette, though. The device uses a cheap Arduino clone, but even with a real Arduino, the price wouldnt be too bad. However, the price tag quoted doesnt include a few connectors or the speaker that appears in the schematic. Theres a note that the model built uses a jack instead of a speaker, but it would be nice to include both and use the kind of jack that disconnects the speaker when you plug speakers or headphones in.

The code is simple and there are four possible effects you can cycle through with one of the buttons. Unlike a real theremin, you can trigger this one with anything the ultrasonic sensor can see. The Arduino audio quality is not superb, of course, but it is still a fun rainy day project.

We couldnt help but think that a 32-bit Arduino could have used one of the sophisticated audio libraries. However, there are other libraries that might improve things even with the 8-bit processor.

Granted, this isnt a true theremin, but weve seen plenty of those, too. Weve even used the same sensors to control a PC.

Calls for open trade to greet Pence as Trump skips Asia summit "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

Asia-Pacific leaders will join the heads of Southeast Asian states this week in Singapore to renew calls for multilateralism and fresh pledges to resolve regional conflicts ranging from the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar to tensions in the South China Sea.

Notably absent when regional powers such as China, Japan and India seek to enlist support for a multilateral trading system will be U.S. President Donald Trump, whose decision to skip the Asia summit has raised questions about his commitment to a regional strategy aimed at checking Chinas rise.

Vice President Mike Pence will attend instead of Trump, and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are among those expected to join leaders from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Li is expected to rally support for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) pact now being negotiated, showcased to be the free trade deal that will encompass more than a third of the worlds GDP.

The pact includes 16 countries, including China, India, Japan and South Korea, but not the United States.

Trump has demanded trade agreements that are fair and enforceable and based on the principle of reciprocity. He has re-negotiated an existing pact with South Korea and the three-way deal with Mexico and Canada, and pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, which involved four Southeast Asian states.

The United States is also in the midst of a bitter trade war with China which has undermined global markets.

China is pushing the RCEP deal Assistant Foreign Minister Chen Xiaodong told reporters on Thursday it will be of great significance for deepening regional cooperation, coping with unilateralism and protectionism, and promoting an open, inclusive and rules-based international trading system.

However, Li is expected to appeal in Singapore for the need for the worlds two largest economies to work together to resolve trade disputes, reiterating commitment made by Beijings top leaders last week for market opening and lowering tariffs.

It was not clear if Li and Pence will hold separate talks on the sidelines of the Singapore meetings, which would be a prelude to a summit scheduled between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of the month in Buenos Aires.

The encounter, if it happens, would come on the heels of high-level talks in Washington where the two sides aired their main differenc...

Zoe Lofgren's Moment Has Arrived "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

There are a lot of committees in the U.S. House of Representatives. Some are very prestigious. The Ways & Means Committee handles taxes and entitlements. The Finance Committee oversees Wall Street. The Judiciary Committee has a wide mandate and is responsible for looking into impeachable offenses. Obviously, there are weighty responsibilities involved with serving on the Armed Services Committee. In normal times, there isnt much prestige or even advantage associated with serving on the House Administration Committee.

They spend most of their time overseeing management of the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution and National Zoo, the Clerk of the House, the Sergeant at Arms and Capitol Police, the Government Publishing Office, the Architect of the Capitol, and the Office of Congressional Accessibility Services. In addition to that, theyre also responsible for providing the funding to other committees and individual members of Congress.

But they have one other responsibility that is periodically a very big deal.

The Committees jurisdiction over federal elections requires it to consider proposals to amend federal election law and to monitor congressional elections across the United States. The Committee was instrumental in the passage of the Help America Vote Act of 2002, which former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter called the most meaningful improvement in election laws and voting safeguards in a generation. This law provided more than $3 billion dollars for the upgrades of voting equipment and procedures to make the voting process more accessible and to guard against fraud.

The current chairman of the committee is Republican Gregg Harper of Mississippi, a state with possibly the worst and most violent historical record on voting and civil rights in the country. A former chairman of the Rankin County, Mississippi Republican Party, Harper was assigned as an observer during the 2000 Florida presidential recount. Hes only served as chairman since the beginning of this Congress in January 2017. On the Democratic side, former chairman and current ranking member Bob Brady of Philadelphia is retiring. As next in seniority, its likely that Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California will serve as the chairperson of the committee when the next Congress convenes in January 2019. Fortuna...

Trump's Sociopathy is Becoming Our Own "IndyWatch Feed Politics.us"

Back on October 10, Matt Zapotosky and Josh Dawsey of the Washington Post reported that President Trump was in discussions with Jeff Sessionss chief of staff Matt Whitaker about possibly replacing his boss as Attorney General on either an interim basis or perhaps even a permanent capacity. When the president appeared that day on Fox News, Steve Doocy asked him about the article in the Post.

Trump wasnt particularly forthcoming but he did clearly vouch for Whitakers character based on the fact that he knew him. Yet, when reporters asked him about Whitaker today at the White House, Trump said, I dont know Matt Whitaker.

So, here we have two quotes from the president. They are both short and succinct and as uncomplicated as statements can be:

I know Matt Whitaker. October 10, 2018
I dont know Matt Whitaker. November 9, 2018

Those two statements would not necessarily contradict each other if they came in reverse chronological order. After all, when you spend some time with someone you had not previously met, then its no longer true that you do not know them, but it remains true that you didnt know them at an earlier period of time. But you cant know someone in October and no longer know them in November.

Trump was telling the truth the first time, which is well-documented and can be verified all...

Could Consciousness All Come Down to the Way Things Vibrate? "IndyWatch Feed World"

Why is my awareness here, while yours is over there? Why is the universe split in two for each of us, into a subject and an infinity of objects? How is each of us our own center of experience, receiving information about the rest of the world out there? Why are some things conscious and others apparently not? Is a rat conscious? A gnat? A bacterium?

These questions are all aspects of the ancient mind-body problem, which asks, essentially: What is the relationship between mind and matter? Its resisted a generally satisfying conclusion for thousands of years.

The mind-body problem enjoyed a major rebranding over the last two decades. Now its generally known as the hard problem of consciousness, after philosopher David Chalmers coined this term in a now classic paper and further explored it in his 1996 book, The Conscious Mind: In Search of a Fundamental Theory.

Chalmers thought the mind-body problem should be called hard in comparison to what, with tongue in cheek, he called the easy problems of neuroscience: How do neurons and the brain work at the physical level? Of course theyre not actually easy at all. But his point was that theyre relatively easy compared to the truly difficult problem of explaining how consciousness relates to matter.

Over the last decade, my colleague, University of California, Santa Barbara psychology professor Jonathan Schooler and I have developed what we call a resonance theory of consciousness. We suggest that resonance another word for synchronized vibrations is at the heart of not only human consciousness but also animal consciousness and of physical reality more generally. It sounds like something the hippies might have dreamed up its all vibrations, man! but stick with me.

China debuts virtual news anchor with AI "IndyWatch Feed World"

Hong Kong - News anchors, beware. The robots are coming for your jobs, too. China's state news agency has debuted a virtual anchor designed to be able to deliver the news 24 hours a day. Xinhua unveiled its "artificial intelligence news anchor" Wednesday at an internet conference in the eastern city of Wuzhen."Hello, you are watching English news program. I am AI news anchor in Beijing," the computer-generated host announced in a robotic voice at that start of its English-language broadcast. Developed by Xinhua and Chinese search engine company Sogou, the anchor was designed to simulate human voice, facial expressions and gestures. The AI news reader "learns from live broadcasting videos by himself and can read texts as naturally as a professional news anchor," according to Xinhua. The news agency said the simulations can be used on its website and social media platforms and will "reduce news production costs and improve efficiency."It didn't say whether any of China's state-run TV...

What Ive been reading "IndyWatch Feed Economics"

1. Richard A. Arenberg, Congressional Procedure: A Practical Guide to the Legislative Process in the U.S. Congress.  You know, this stuff matters a lot more than it used to.

2. Timothy Larsen, John Stuart Mill: A Secular Life.  Covers the evolution of religion in Mills life, and stresses that toward the very life he turned back to a religiously-oriented world view.  Arguably all of the (< 12) people at Mills funeral were Christians.  As a side benefit, the book has an illuminating treatment of the romance with Harriet Taylor.  Ive since ordered four other of Larsens books, the ultimate compliment.

3. Daniel Walker Howe, The Political Culture of the American Whigs.  An excellent history book in its own right, this is also one of the best sources for understanding the 19th century roots of our current dilemma.  Reading everything by Daniel Walker Howe is in fact a good algorithm for proceeding in life.

Daniel S. Hamermesh, Spending Time: The Most Valuable Resource is a good introduction to what economists know about the allocation of time, both evidence and theory.

Adam Zamoyski, Napoleon: A Life I read only some parts of, and found very well-written and entertaining, but it wasnt sufficiently conceptually innovative to hold my interest.

Jacy Reese has a new book The End of Animal Farming: How Scientists, Entrepreneurs, and Activists are Building an Animal-Free Food System.  It is overstated, but still better than the near-unanimous ignoring of these issues which goes on in the economics profession.

Stacey Abrams Continues Struggle for Voting Rights in Georgia
JAY REEVES
Nov 10th 2018 7:14PM

ATLANTA (AP) Ahead by more than 60,000 votes days after Georgia's gubernatorial election, Republican Brian Kemp pushed for Democrat Stacey Abrams to concede Saturday as civil rights groups urged her to stay in the fight.

Kemp's campaign issued a statement that said it was mathematically impossible for Abrams to even force a runoff, much less win outright. It called Abrams' refusals to concede "a disgrace to democracy" that "completely ignore the will of the people."

But members of civil rights groups including the Atlanta-based Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People held a small rally urging Abrams to keep fighting until every vote is counted.

"That is a promise she made," said Ben Williams, president of the Cobb County branch of the SCLC, founded by the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Erick Allen, a black Democrat newly elected to the Georgia House, said allegations of voter suppression and questions about Election Day problems could dog Kemp as governor if he eventually prevails.

"The erosion in trust is done," said Allen.

Abrams is trying to become the first black woman elected governor in the United States, while Kemp is attempting to continue GOP dominance in a diversifying state that could be a battleground in the 2020 presidential election.

In a statement Saturday afternoon, she said she had met with voters who experienced difficulties casting ballots. She said her campaign had heard stories of voters turned away from the polls, students and military members who requested absentee ballots that never arrived or were "lost in the mail" and first-time and longtime voters who found their names were "no longer on the list."

She vowed to continue to fight.

"I am fighting to make sure our democracy works for and represents everyone who has ever put their faith in it. I am fighting for every Georgian who cast a ballot with the promise that their vote would count," Abrams added.

Unofficial returns show Kemp wi...
