Latam Eco Review: Killing jaguars for arthritic cream and wine "IndyWatch Feed Enviro"

The top stories last week from our Spanish-language service, Mongabay Latam, followed the fate of Surinames hunted jaguars, Bogotas urban forest preserve, and Chiles Humboldt Archipelago. Surinames jaguars killed for arthritis creams and wine Surinames jaguar population is being decimated for the Asian market in arthritis cream, soap, aphrodisiacs and even wine, according to an investigation by World Animal Protection. The inquiry uncovered a chain of hunting and secret trade with high evidence of animal cruelty. Local hunters sell the jaguars for around $260 to Chinese traffickers. Jaguars are increasingly being substituted for tigers, which have become rare, to meet Asian demand for wildlife parts. A jaguar shot in Suriname and transported in a canoe. Mine and port project threatens Humboldt Archipelago A mine and port project in Chiles Humboldt Archipelago could damage the marine life of nearby protected areas, including the Humboldt penguin. While approval for the Dominga project is on hold, authorities have already set a worrying precedent by approving a similar, though much bigger, mining project nearby. More than 560 species could be affected if the project goes through. Marine shelf in La Higuera. Image courtesy of Eduardo Sorenson/Oceana. Bogots urban forest imperiled by controversy and inertia A recent judicial order backing a mayoral plan to carve up the Thomas Van der Hammen Reserve is just the latest controversy around this urban forest. After an outcry from environmentalists and academics, the order was revoked, leaving the reserve in the same state

Call to protect dwindling wilderness before it disappears forever "IndyWatch Feed Pacific"

New, highly detailed maps now reveal the state of the worlds wilderness, both on land and at sea, and the picture looks bleak. In a series of recent studies, a group of researchers led by ecologist James Watson of the Wildlife Conservation Society and Australias University of Queensland analyzed the surface of Earth for significant human activity, such as roads and railways, pastures and farmland, and population centers, at a resolution of 1 square kilometer (0.4 square miles). In the oceans, they looked at fishing efforts as well as fertilizer effluent and shipping lanes. The Okavango Delta in southern Africa. Image by Gregoire Dubois. The results are staggering, as summarized Oct. 31 in the journal Nature: Just 13 percent of the worlds oceans lack signs of human activity. And the figures on land arent much higher: not counting Antarctica, just 23 percent of terrestrial wilderness remains. But hidden in what Watson called a horror story for untouched places is the potential to save whats left and, with it, life on Earth. Science is clearly showing that large intact places are the best low-hanging fruit that we should go and conserve, Watson told Mongabay. Early on in the research, a 2016 study comparing those changes with the pace of population and economic growth indicated that we werent losing wilderness as quickly as might be expected. Those encouraging results suggested that, as a species, we humans were using resources more efficiently, the researchers said. The extent of wilderness on land and at

NicaNotes: Smoking Gun Shows Catholic Hierarchy Coup Involvement "IndyWatch Feed War"

One of the smoking guns, proving the lie of the opposition and media story about the supposedly peaceful, spontaneous uprising against the tyrant Daniel Ortega, was revealed with the release on Oct. 23 of a clandestine recording of a Catholic bishop claiming credit for the failed coup. Four Arrested While Blocking Military Drone Base: Traffic Blocked Beale Air Force Base for Nearly an Hour "IndyWatch Feed War"

Oct 30 2018 protesting drone warfare at Beale Air Force Base

By Shirley Osgood, October 30, 2018

BEALE AIR FORCE BASE, near Wheatland  Four demonstrators were arrested early Tuesday, Oct. 30, as they opposed the ongoing 17-year U.S. bombing campaign in Afghanistan and U.S. occupation of one of the poorest countries in the world.

Traffic was backed up for 1/2 mile or more down two merging roads, for nearly an hour as protesters arriving in the dark of early morning blocked the main entrance road into Beale Air Force Base, South Beale Rd, near Wheatland, CA.

Activists stretched a large banner across the road that said:  STOP DRONING AFGHANISTAN;  17 YEARS ENOUGH!

Four protesters were arrested, and held for 2.5 hours in military jail cells on the base. They face misdemeanor trespassing charges in U.S. Court with a maximum penalty of six months in federal prison. Those arrested were Michael Kerr, Bay Point, CA; Mauro Oliveira, Montgomery Creek, CA; Shirley Osgood, Grass Valley, CA and Toby Blome, El Cerrito, CA.

Afghanistan, referred to as the most droned country on earth, has over 40,000 foreign troops, including U.S. military, allied forces and private mercenaries. Mission Accomplished was declared by two previous U.S. Administrations, Bush and Obama, yet, after October 7, the 17th anniversary of the U.S. invasion, the bombing campaign continues under President Trump, with no end in sight.

Beale Air Force Base is intimately involved in the U.S. drone assassination program.  Airmen at Beale who are in the covert unit that controls the U.S. Global Hawk surveillance drone work cooperatively with armed drone operators elsewhere to surveil, target, and execute drone strikes remotely in foreign countries.  Thousands of civilians have been killed, and funerals, wedding parties, mosques, schools and other public gatherings have been attacked by U.S. remotely controlled planes, known as drones.

Just two weeks ago, on Oct. 12, over 75 Somali new young recruits with Al-Shabaab were killed by a single U.S. drone attack.  We oppose the use of armed drones in all killing at...

In December 2017 an IS jihadist killed nine people in an attack on a church in a south Cairo suburb.

In February 2018, the Egyptian army launched a major offensive against IS in the Sinai Peninsula, where the group has maintained a strong presence since the fall of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.

Dubbed Sinai 2018, the military campaign has killed more than 450 jihadists, according to the army.

NY Times explains why the U.S. is standing by the Saudi crown prince but somehow leaves out the Israel connection "IndyWatch Feed War"

Heres an astonishing failure by two otherwise excellent New York Times reporters: they wrote a long, valuable analysis about why the U.S. is standing by the murderous crown prince of Saudi Arabia but they only mentioned Israels support for him twice.

In a front-page story in todays paper, David D. Kirkpatrick and Ben Hubbard explain why the kingdoms de facto leader, 33-year-old Mohammed bin Salman, is in no immediate danger of losing power despite (almost certainly) ordering the murder a month ago of the dissident journalist, Jamal Khashoggi. They report that the U.S. government is continuing to support the crown prince, and that Major figures in [American] finance signaled that they, too, intended to look past the killing.

But the de facto Israel-Saudi Arabia alliance is only mentioned in passing. Surely reporters as good as Kirkpatrick and Hubbard could have found high-level sources within both Israel and the U.S. who could have detailed the obvious that Israel wants Mohammed bin Salman to stay exactly where he is, no matter what brutal crimes he ordered. And in the Trump administration, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has more influence in a U.S. government than he ever has had before.

Today, a full month after Jamal Khashoggi was apparently killed and dismembered in a Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, Netanyahu finally commented publicly on the Khashoggi killing. After a meeting in Bulgaria, he said:

What happened in the Israeli consulate was horrendous and it should be duly dealt with. Yet at the same time I say it, it is very important for the stability of the world, for the region and for the world, that Saudi Arabia remain stable.

Meanwhile, Khashoggis fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, published a heartfelt plea in the Washington Post. After some moving personal memories, she challenged the rest of the world, especially the United States:

It is now up to the international community to bring the perpetrators to justice. Of all nations, the United States should be leading the way. The country was founded on the ideals of liberty and justice for all, the First Amendment enshrining the ideals...

Dawn Spacecraft Runs Out of Hydrazine, Ceases Operations "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

NASA's Dawn Mission to Asteroid Belt Comes to End

NASA's Dawn spacecraft has gone silent, ending a historic mission that studied time capsules from the solar system's earliest chapter.

Dawn missed scheduled communications sessions with NASA's Deep Space Network on Wednesday, Oct. 31, and Thursday, Nov. 1. After the flight team eliminated other possible causes for the missed communications, mission managers concluded that the spacecraft finally ran out of hydrazine, the fuel that enables the spacecraft to control its pointing. Dawn can no longer keep its antennae trained on Earth to communicate with mission control or turn its solar panels to the Sun to recharge.

The Dawn spacecraft launched 11 years ago to visit the two largest objects in the main asteroid belt. Currently, it's in orbit around the dwarf planet Ceres, where it will remain for decades.

This is just the beginning: Palestinian refugees in Jerusalem fear municipality takeover of UNRWA "IndyWatch Feed War"

It was a typical Tuesday morning in the Shufat Refugee Camp in occupied East Jerusalem. Children made their way to school through the narrow alleyways, while men and women on their way to work waited in line at the two military checkpoints in the camp: one leading to Ramallah, one to Jerusalem.

The camps residents were surprised to find 15 sanitation workers from Israels Jerusalem Municipality, escorted by Israeli border police and garbage trucks, picking up trash in the streets. Among them was Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.

We were surprised to see them picking up trash from the streets, because this is the job of the UNRWA sanitation workers, Shaher Alqam, 51, a resident of the camp told Mondoweiss.

A sanitation worker from the Jerusalem municipality sweeps up garbage in Shufat as armed Israeli border police watch on in the background (Source: Nir Barkat, Facebook)

Though located within the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem, Shufat Camp and its estimated 24,000 residents the majority of whom are holders of Jerusalem IDs are completely enclosed by Israels separation wall, cutting it off from the rest of the city.

Like other refugee camps across the occupied Palestinian territory, Shufat was established, and is still largely run under the control of UNRWA in terms of social services, education, and health care. Israeli municipal services, including trash collection, are few and far between.

Whenever the municipality makes a rare appearance in the camp, it is only to distribute dozens of fines on vehicles that are parked illegally in the camp, Alqam said, referring to an Israeli raid on Shufat on October 16.

They never come to clean up trash or do anything that benefits the Jerusalemites living here, he said. In this camp, we fly the blue UNRWA flag and survi...

Federal Judge Rejects Last-ditch Effort to Block North Dakota Voter Suppression Law "IndyWatch Feed 1stpeople"

Tribal officials in North Dakota maintain the states new voter ID law that requires a physical address on ID discriminates against American Indians living on reservations where the U.S. Postal delivers only to P.O. boxes.

#NativeVote18

Published November 2, 2018

BISMARCK, N.D.  Citing the short time until next Tuesdays midterm election, Federal District Judge Daniel L. Hovland ruled in a brief, two-page order on Thursday he would not block North Dakotas requirement that voters have a residential address. The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday by the Native American Rights Fund on behalf of the Spirit Lake Tribe and several American Indians living in North Dakota.

At issue is the law passed by the majority Republican legislature that requires voters to have a physical address on their IDs when voting versus having simply a post office box number. The problem is on some rural American Indian reservation, particularly those in North Dakota, the U.S. Postal Service does not deliver to residential addresses. Therefore, American Indians on their state-issued IDs, such as drivers licenses, personal IDs and tribal card use P.O. box numbers.

Tribal leaders in North Dakota maintain the law is an attempt to suppress the Native vote in the state.

The lawsuit presented several incidences where North Dakota American Indians could not obtain absentee ballots because their physical addresses were not in the states database.

In his order, the judge the allegations contained within the lawsuit give the court great cause for concern that will require a detailed response from the states secretary of state. Issuing an order this close to the election would cause much confusion, Hovland said.

In this case, early voting has already begun, Hovland wrote. Election Da...

The story of the book of Revelation "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

I have referred several times to the weird book of Revelation in the Bible, particularly how it has become the go-to source for the Rapture-lovers. I just learned that my colleague Tim Beal in the Department of Religious Studies at Case Western Reserve University has published a new book titled The Book of Revelation: A Biography that dishes the dirt on this last book in the Bible that has produced such a lot of head scratching and been the source of so many weird fantasies.

The publishers description of the book lays out what it is about.

Few biblical books have been as revered and reviled as Revelation. Many hail it as the pinnacle of prophetic vision, the cornerstone of the biblical canon, and, for those with eyes to see, the key to understanding the past, present, and future. Others denounce it as the work of a disturbed individual whose horrific dreams of inhumane violence should never have been allowed into the Bible. Timothy Beal provides a concise cultural history of Revelation and the apocalyptic imaginations it has fueled.

Taking readers from the books composition amid the Christian persecutions of first-century Rome to its enduring influence today in popular culture, media, and visual art, Beal explores the often wildly contradictory lives of this sometimes horrifying, sometimes inspiring biblical vision. He shows how such figures as Augustine and Hildegard of Bingen made Revelation central to their own mystical worldviews, and how, thanks to the vivid works of art it inspired, the book remained popular even as it was denounced by later church leaders such as Martin Luther.

In an interview, Beal elaborates on the problems posed by this book for mainstream Christians, and the many misunderstandings about it.

I am still a religious personIm married to a Presbyterian ministerbut certainly in a progressive community where nobody goes near Revelation with a 10-foot pole. Most people in my religious circles wonder why this even got into the Bible in the first place.

There seems to be a vague sense that Revelation is about some kind of end, some kind of massive final judgment with everyone getting sent either to heaven or to hell. That is kind of incorrect. Sure, the world gets destroyed many times over. Theres tons of destruction and blood and monsters and hyperbolic language.

The Rapture is not even in Revelation, but its now part of the phenomenon we call Revelation . The text has...

Members of Irvine, Calif. synagogue united in strength after building is defaced with anti-Semitic graffiti "IndyWatch Feed War"

The gates are locked, but beyond the secured buildings members of the Beth Jacob Congregation say they are united in strength the day after a hooded intruder defaced their place of worship.

.

Yes, it hurts me in the heart. I feel like this, this is my child, congregation co-founder Basil Luck said Thursday, gesturing to the property nestled near the Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course in Irvine.

.

But more than the reality of seeing the graffiti is seeing the letters of support that have given us deep hope. So many people care, and we join with them knowing that there is more good than bad in the world.

.

The massive outpouring of support gave the congregations 225 families a huge boost, Luck said, reflecting on a lovely missive from Irvines mayor and flowers and messages from people across the county and beyond.

.

On Wednesday, students from Chapman University and UC Irvine came to pay their respects, and on Thursday, state Atty. Gen. Xavier Becerra condemned the unconscionable vandalism directed at worshipers, adding: Hate crimes must never find safe harbor anywhere in America. The Linux Throwie: Powering a Linux Server with a 300mW Solar Panel "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Have you ever had one of those moments, when youre rummaging through your spare parts heap, and have a rather bizarre project idea that you cant quite get out of your head? You know, the ones that have no clear use, but simply demand to be born, of glass and steel and silicon?

This time, the stubborn idea in question was sort of like a solar-rechargeable LED throwie, but instead of a blinking light, it has a fully cloud-accessible embedded Linux server in the form of a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. Your choice of embedded Linux board should work I just happen to have a lot of these due to a shipping error.

There were two main challenges here: First, it would have to combine the smallest practical combination of solar panel, power supply, and battery that could run the Raspberry Pi. Second, well need to remotely activate and access the Pi regardless of where it is, as well as be able to connect it to WiFi without direct physical access. In this article well be dealing with the first set of problems stay tuned for the rest.

Secret LVMPD officer text messages revealed from night of 1 October shooting "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

The 5X5 News channel on YouTube has done an excellent job enhancing private police text messages captured by an officer body-worn camera on the night of the 1 October Las Vegas shooting in which 58 people were reported to be shot dead by a single shooter named Stephen Paddock.

In the video published on Thursday, an officer can be seen sending and receiving text messages in a private four person closed group and the messages appear to contain major intel from that night not known to others at the time.

One of the four officers names and phone numbers has been made visible after enhancement as the videos introduction points out.

The first visible text message is from 2:30 a.m. on the morning of October 2. The message reads:

More people involved.

I dont think it was only from the hotel. Not with that damage.

Another text says: suspect.

Below the word suspect three images of a white male can be seen displayed on the screen. In one of the images, two younger white women can also be seen.

The officer receiving the messages makes it a point to show the suspect shown in the pictures to a nearby officer. Who is this man? WHo are the two women?

Watch the film the Israel lobby didnt want you to see "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

The Electronic Intifada has obtained a complete copy of The Lobby USA, a four-part undercover investigation by Al Jazeera into Israels covert influence campaign in the United States.

It is today publishing the first two episodes. The Paris-based Orient XXI has published the same episodes with French subtitles.

The film was made by Al Jazeera during 2016 and was completed in October 2017.

But it was censored after Qatar, the gas-rich Gulf emirate that funds Al Jazeera, came under intense Israel lobby pressure not to air the film.

Although Al Jazeeras director-general claimed last month that there were outstanding legal issues with the film, his assertions have been flatly contradicted by his own journalists.

In March, The Electronic Intifada was the first to report on any of the films specific content. We followed this in August by publishing the first extract of the film, and shortly after Max Blumenthal at the Grayzone Project released others.

Since then, The Electronic Intifada has released three other extracts, and several other journalists have watched the entire film and written about it including Alain Gresh and Antony Loewenstein.

Now The Electronic Intifada can reveal for the first time that it has obtained all four parts of the film.

You can watch the first two parts in the video embeds above and below.

Norway summons Iranian ambassador over Denmark assassination plot "IndyWatch Feed War"

Norway summoned the Iranian ambassador on Thursday over a suspected assassination plot against an Iranian Arab opposition figure in Denmark involving a Norwegian citizen of Iranian background.

.
Denmark said on Tuesday it suspected the Iranian government intelligence service had tried to carry out an assassination on its soil. It is now calling for fresh European Union-wide sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide (pictured) said that Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Hassan Habibollah Zadeh was informed that we look at the case with great concern. (EMMANUEL DUNAND/AFP/Getty Images)

.
A Norwegian citizen of Iranian background was arrested in Sweden on Oct. 21 in connection with the plot and extradited to Denmark, Swedish security police have said.

.
During the meeting we underlined that the activity, that has come to light through the investigation in Denmark, is unacceptable, Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide said in a statement.

.
We see the situation that has arisen in Denmark as very serious and that a Norwegian citizen of Iranian background is suspected in this case, she added.

.
The attack was meant to target the leader of the Danish branch of the Arab Struggle Movement for the Liberation of Ahvaz (ASMLA), Danish intelligence chief Finn Borch Andersen said.

.
ASMLA seeks a separate state for ethnic Arabs in Irans oil-producing southwestern province of Khuzestan. Arabs are a minority in Iran, and some see themselves as under Persian occupation and want independence or autonomy.

.
The Norwegian citizen has denied the charges and the Iranian government has also denied any connection with what Norway suspects is a plot.

Exit From The Matrix: Getting in the creative flow "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

by Jon Rappoport

November 2, 2018

Life as its usually lived features a movie in which the mind operates like an ox pulling along a huge cart full of conflicts (The Magician Awakes, Jon Rappoport)

One of my main purposes has been developing exercises that induce FLOW, a condition that is both internal and external. It happens in the body, in the mind and in the world.

When youre in the FLOW, your creative impulse is heightened, and your response to events and people is more direct and natural. Problems tend to melt.

Over time, my imagination exercises in Exit From The Matrix can help achieve more FLOW.

In general, as I put together my collections, I wanted to provide a PhD experience where none existedknowledge AN INDIVIDUAL could deploy to ascend to greater heights in his life. Greater heights of creativity and power

To invent the future he truly wants.

That is always my goal.

My 3 Matrix collectionsThe Matrix Revealed, Exit From The Matrix, Power Outside The Matrixare not a brush-off. Theyre meant to be studied and worked with over a long period of time. With many payoffs along the way.

My original inspiration was the ancient Tibetan practitioners, who existed long before the priest class moved in and tried to codify society and spiritual experience. The original magicians were working with raw Space and Time, doing exercises which demonstrated that these two basic qualities of the Universe were malleable and elastic. The Subjective and Objective levels of living were actually One Whole.

And in that Whole the FLOW was pre-eminent and even ecstatic.

Among their Tibetan realizations: a piece of work, an enterprise, and even a civilization could be built on an anticipatory sense of WHAT COMES NEXT. And with their imagination techniques under their belt, some of these magicians knew what came next. They were in that FLOW.

What Im talking about here connects Zen, Tao, and other ancient practices that also ignore or give short shrift to creative force. When one is in the FLOW, he feels what is coming next, but at the same time he chooses what to create next. This paradox resolves by itself. He creates what he wants to, and he does it in...

Record Employment for 12th Time Under Trump "IndyWatch Feed War"

More Americans are working now than any time in history. Think of thatSo today, right now, we have more Americans working than at any time, any time in the history of our country.

The economy is the second most important issue for registered voters as the midterm election nears, a new Gallup Poll says. And there was very good economic news on Friday, as the Labor Departments Bureau of Labor Statistics rolled out the October employment report the final one before next weeks midterm election.

The number of employed Americans has never been higher. The 156,562,000 Americans employed in October is the twefth record set under President Donald Trump.

In October, the number of employed men age 20 and up 80,405,000 set the 12th record since Trump took office; and likewise, for the 12th time, the number of employed women age 20 and up set a record, reaching 70,909,000 in October.

On top of those numbers, the economy added a whopping 250,000 jobs last month. After revisions, job gains have averaged 218,000 over the past 3 months.

The number of Americans not in the labor force dipped to 95.8 million, down from last months record high; and the labor force participation rate increased two-tenths of a point to 62.9 percent, a move in the right direction.

US Sanctions Venezuela and Cuba, Threatens Nicaragua "IndyWatch Feed War"

The White House is threatening to hit Nicaragua with sanctions after announcing new restrictions against Venezuela and Cuba Thursday, calling the three nations a troika of tyranny.

Speaking in Miami Thursday, National Security Advisor John Bolton said the United States will no longer appease dictators and despots near our shores in this hemisphere.

Bolton likened the leaders of their nations Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela, Raul Castro of Cuba, and Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua to the bumbling comedy team The Three Stooges.

FILE - U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton gestures while speaking to the media in Tbilisi, Georgia, Oct. 26, 2018.

National Security Advisor John Bolton

These tyrants fancy themselves strongmen, revolutionaries, icons, and luminaries. In reality, they are clownish pitiful figures more akin to Larry, Curly, and Moe, Bolton said.

The new sanctions against Venezuela target the countrys gold market, banning U.S. citizens and companies from doing any gold-related business with Venezuela.

The United States has accused Maduro of illegally exporting more than 20 million tons of gold to Turkey to avoid previous U.S. sanctions.

Bolton blamed Cuba for boosting the Maduro government in Venezuela, where a failing economy has led to hyperinflation, severe shortages of basic goods, and a total collapse of democracy.

He said the United States has added another two dozen Cuban entities to the list of entities who are also prohibited from doing business with Americans.

Bolton also warned Ortega against continuing his violent deadly crackdown on the opposition.

The U.S. has already slapped sanctions on several senior Nicaraguan officials over the violence and alleged corruption.

NYU student senators introduce resolution for university divestment from companies violating Palestinian human rights "IndyWatch Feed War"

The New York University (NYU) moved one step closer to participating in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS), with a resolution presented to the NYU Student Government Assembly today, November 1st. The Resolution on the Human Rights of Palestinians calls for divesting from corporations who violate Palestinian human rights, and was presented by three students: Bayan Abubakr and Rose Asaf along with Alternate Student Senator at-Large Leen Dweik. Asaf, Abubakr, and Dweik are all seniors at NYU and members of Students for Justice in Palestine. Additionally, Asaf is a member of Jewish Voice for Peace. The resolution will be voted on December 6th.

Targeting three corporations Caterpillar Inc., Lockheed Martin, and General Electric the resolution brings attention to the ways in which these corporations violate Palestinian human rights. The resolution calls on the university to divest from these companies as well as others complicit in human rights abuses of Palestinians and globally. The resolution ultimately calls on the university to implement a socially responsible investment model, which would put in a place a screen to ensure the universitys investments that uphold human rights for all.

The resolution is supported by 53 undersigned student groups, including the Black Student Union; Mosaic: The Interfaith Students of Color Coalition at NYU; NYU College Libertarians; the Muslim Student Association; and NYU Young Democratic Socialists of America. In addition to these clubs, there are 34 faculty endorsements who are listed in Appendix B of the resolution. The presentation of the resolution comes only a week after more than thirty student groups at NYU pledged non-cooperation with the NYU Tel Aviv campus.

The resolution will be voted on at the December 6th meeting of the Student Government Assembly. As determined by a previous vote in the Student Government, the vote will be held by way of secret ballot to ensure that people can vote on the resolution without falling under the influence of outside pressure.

Just a few days ago, 11 Jewish people were murdered by a white supremacist in Pittsburgh. The authors of this resolution are in unyielding solidarity with the Jewish people and unequivocally oppose anti-Semitism. The rise of nationalism worldwide has contributed to the upsurge of anti-Semitism, racism, and Islamophobia that has manifested globally. The authors of this resolution believe that the only way forward is solidarity with all oppressed peoples.

As a Palestinian, this resolution is deeply personal to me. As an NYU student, it hurts and shocks me that the university would continue to invest in companies that directly contribute to...

Your native language affects what you can and cant see "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Now in a new paper, published in Psychological Science, Martin Maier and Rasha Abdel Rahman at the Humboldt University of Berlin report that by affecting visual processing at an early stage, such linguistic differences can even determine whether someone will see a coloured shape or they wont. Our native language is thus one of the forces that determine what we consciously perceive, they write.

The wavelengths of light that we perceive as colours form a smooth continuum, but crucially, the colour categories that people use to divide up this spectrum vary between languages. Maier and Abdel-Rahman studied native Greek-, Russian- and German-speakers for whom these categories differ.

In both Greek and Russian, there is a dedicated category-word for light blue and another for dark blue but no specific word for blue as a broader category. In German (as in English), people can use qualifiers to refer to light blue, navy blue or sky blue, and so on, but there are no dedicated category words for these shades. On the other hand, in German (also as in English) there is a dedicated word blue (blau in German) to cover all the shades of blue. However, Russian, Greek and German alike have a dedicated category word for referring to all shades of green, just as we do in English.

Earlier work already showed that having a category term for something whether its an object or a colour speeds up a persons ability to identify that item among a host of others. Russian-speakers are faster at discriminating between light and dark blue colour patches than English-speakers, for example. Maier and Abdel-Rahman wanted to go further and see whether linguistic colour categories would influence the likelihood of speakers of different languages becoming conscious of something at all.

Sometimes, a journalist wakes up in the middle of a crisis and realizes that they are running with the big dogs  and that seems to be the case with regard to the multiple caravan issues and the associated dangers accompanying this event.

It is my considered opinion that we are at a crossroads of such a magnitude that the fate of our country, as well as the planet, will soon be decided for the next 100 years. My favorite refrain to family, friends and colleagues is that In the course of my lifetime, I have never seen anything close to what we are living through.

In this article, I will review a couple of pertinent facts to establish a baseline of absolute crisis and then I will share the contents of various personal interviews I have conducted in the past 24 hours which speaks to the gravity of the times that we are living in.

British police have launched a criminal investigation into allegations of anti-Semitic hate crimes within the opposition Labour Party.

The Metropolitan Police said Friday that it was acting on a dossier of information given to London police chief Cressida Dick. A police spokesman said it was handed to her on September 4 following an interview on LBC radio.

LBC had in its possession an internal Labour Party dossier that detailed 45 cases involving social media posts by party members, including one post that read: We shall rid the Jews who are a cancer on us all.

The police statement said the person making the complaint alleged that the documentation included evidence of anti-Semitic hate crimes. The contents have been examined by specialist officers. A criminal investigation has commenced into some of the allegations within the documentation.

Police said they were seeking early investigative advice from the Crown Prosecution Service.

Spain prosecutors seek up to 25 years jail for Catalan separatists "IndyWatch Feed War"

Spanish prosecutors called Friday for Catalan separatist leaders to be jailed for up to 25 years on charges of rebellion or misuse of public funds over last years failed secession bid.

.
In a statement ahead of an upcoming Supreme Court trial, the prosecution service said it was seeking prison sentences against 12 Catalan leaders ranging from seven to 25 years, the latter jail term being sought for former Catalan vice president Oriol Junqueras.

Spanish prosecutors are seeking a 25-year jail term for former Catalan vice president Oriol Junqueras, pictured above. (AFP)

.
But in a sign Spains socialist government disagreed, the attorney generals office announced it would ask for just 12 years jail for Junqueras, accusing him of sedition and misuse of public funds rather than the more serious charge of rebellion.

.
The sensitive trial is expected to start in early 2019 more than a year after Catalan leaders attempted to break from Spain in October 2017 by staging a referendum despite a court ban and subsequently proclaiming independence.

.
Spains then conservative government moved swiftly to depose the Catalan executive, dissolve the regional parliament and call snap local elections in December.

.
Some Catalan leaders like deposed regional president Carles Puigdemont fled abroad, while others like Junqueras remained and were put into custody pending the trial.

.
Apart from Junqueras, prosecutors want two influential Catalan civic leaders, Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart, and former regional parliamentary speaker Carme Forcadell jailed for 17 years.

.
In a separate case, they said they were also seeking four to 11 years jail against former regional police leaders including Catalonias then police chief Josep Lluis Trapero, whom they also accuse of rebellion.

.
In its statement, the prosecution service said pro-independence leaders planned to use all possible means to achieve secession, including knowing that the state wouldnt accept this situation any violence needed to secure this criminal result.

.
It said separatist leaders had instigated big citizen mobilizations that represented an intimidating force and had also used the regional police force, with its 17,000 agents, which followed their orders.

.
The charge of rebellion has caused controversy in Spain, not just among those who support Catalan independence but further afield among legal exper...

People Link Body Shapes with Personality Traits "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

People Link Body Shapes with Personality Traits:

When we meet new people, our first impressions of their personality may depend, at least in part, on their body shape, according to research published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

"Our research shows that people infer a wide range of personality traits just by looking at the physical features of a particular body," says psychological scientist Ying Hu of the University of Texas at Dallas, first author on the research. "Stereotypes based on body shape can contribute to how we judge and interact with new acquaintances and strangers. Understanding these biases is important for considering how we form first impressions."

Previous research has shown that we infer a considerable amount of social information by looking at other people's faces, but relatively little research has explored whether body shapes also contribute to these judgments.

[...] Hu and colleagues created 140 realistic body models, of which 70 were female and 70 male. The three-dimensional renderings were generated from random values along 10 different body dimensions, using data from laser scans of actual human bodies. Using these models allowed the researchers to know the precise physical measurements of each body shown in the study.

A total of 76 undergraduate participants viewed a set of models they saw each body from two angles and indicated whether 30 trait words shown on screen applied to that body. The trait words reflected dimensions of the Big Five personality traits (a common measure of personality used in psychology research) typically seen as positive (e.g., enthusiastic, extraverted, dominant) or negative (e.g., quiet, reserved, shy).

[...] Generally, participants judged heavier bodies as being associated with more negative traits, such as being lazy and careless; they judged lighter bodies as having more positive traits, such as being self-confident and enthusiastic.

Furthermore, the participants perceived classically feminine (e.g., pear-shaped) and classically masculine (e.g., broad-shouldered) bodies as being associated with "active" traits, such as being quarrelsome, extraverted, and irritable. Male and female bodies that were more rectangular, on the other hand, were...

Ethnic Uigur women look through a security fence as Chinese soldiers stand guard in Urumqi, in Chinas far west Xinjiang region, on July 9, 2009. (Peter Parks/AFP/Getty Images)

Afghanistans borderlands have long been a refuge for ethnic minorities fleeing persecution in China. In the 18th century, when the Qing empire conquered Xinjiang, Uighurs who rebelled against Qing rule escaped to Badakhshan. Today, Chinas campaigns and restrictions against the Uighurs, a Turkic-speaking Muslim minority group in the western region of Xinjiang, have spurred an exodus into Afghanistan, especially after Beijing and the local authorities intensified their crackdown on Uighur freedoms, religion, and culture.

Beijing claims that terrorism is spilling over from Afghanistan into Xinjiang. But in reality, Chinese oppression and ethnic conflict in Xinjiang are helping to further destabilize Afghanistan and turn young Uighurs, increasingly targeted by the Chinese state, toward violent resistance.

Many Uighurs have been opposed to rule from Beijing since China seized the region in 1949, and resistance to Chinese control goes back centuries. In the 1990s, after the Central Asian republics gained independence following the Soviet Unions collapse, Beijing feared Uighur ambitions to create their own state of East Turkestan. Especially after the 9/11 attacks, China attempted to characterize Uighur ambitions as terrorism, beginning the anti-three evil forces (extremism, terrorism, and separatism) campaign.

Between 1990 and 2010, the Chinese government gradually turned Uighur ethnic identity and religious practices into national security threats. Daily discrimination and persecution against Uighurs include, but...

Voting Rights Are on the Ballot "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Amid political gridlock, and against the backdrop of gerrymandering and voter suppression, citizen-led efforts to boost voting rights through ballot initiatives are under way in a handful of states.

One such effort concerns Question 2 whether to allow voters to either register or update their registration on the same day as the election. Maryland is seeking to become the 17th state (plus Washington, DC) to allow it. The Washington Post has endorsed it, calling the measure a critical reform that would boost turnout. The Baltimore Sun urged its readers to reject the measure, claiming it would be a headache for election officials.

Same-day registration has been proven to boost turnout by about five percent.

Besides voting on an initiative to legalize recreational marijuana, Michigan will also have two crucial initiatives on the ballot:

Proposition 2 would create an independent committee for rezoning voting districts, which supporters claim would decrease politically motivated gerrymandering.

CISCO warn of a zero-day DoS flaw that is being actively exploited in attacks "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Security experts from CISCO warn of a zero-day vulnerability that is being actively exploited in attacks in the wild.

The flaw, tracked as CVE-2018-15454, affects the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) inspection engine of Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software and Firepower Threat Defense (FTD). The flaw could be exploited by a remote attacker to trigger a DoS condition on the vulnerable device.

A vulnerability in the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) inspection engine of Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) Software and Cisco Firepower Threat Defense (FTD) Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause an affected device to reload or trigger high CPU, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. reads the security advisory published by Cisco.

The vulnerability is due to improper handling of SIP traffic. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending SIP requests designed to specifically trigger this issue at a high rate across an affected device.

Experts from Cisco discovered the vulnerability while resolving a Cisco TAC support case.

The following products running ASA 9.4 and above, and FTD 6.0 and later, are affected by the vulnerability:

  • 3000 Series Industrial Security Appliance (ISA)
  • ASA 5500-X Series Next-Generation Firewalls
  • ASA Services Module for Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches and Cisco 7600 Series Routers
  • Adaptive Security Virtual Appliance (ASAv)
  • Firepower 2100 Series Security Appliance
  • Firepower 4100 Series Security Appliance
  • Firepower 9300 ASA Security Module
  • FTD Virtual (FTDv)

CISCO NX-OS Software

At the time of the disclosure, there is no software update that addresses the flaw, anyway, the company provided several mitigation options.

A possible mitigation consists in disabling the SIP inspection, but this solution is not feasible in many cases because it could interrupt SIP connections.

To disable SIP inspection, configure the following:

  • ASA Software
    policy-map global_policy
     class inspection_default

How to Encode a Secret Message in a Fingerprint "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Fingerprints are no longer just a way to identify peoplethey can also be used to send private notes

Analyzing fingerprints found at the scene of the crime is a classic way to identify a criminal who has accidentally left behind his or her unique signature. But what if theres another way to use fingerprintsone which could even help a criminal achieve their ill-intentioned goals? In an interesting twist, researchers in China have described a way to use fingerprints to encode secret messages.

Take a look at your fingers and note the continuous lines that occasionally swirl into a spiral. Researchers at Fudan University have developed a sophisticated way to construct digital fingerprints that encode secret messages into these spiral points. Their research was published last week in IEEE Transactions on Image Processing.

The technique involves first encoding the desired message into a mathematical equation called a polynomial. The message could be something like the URL to this article, or Lets meet tmr 10AM, same place.

Certain features of fingerprintssuch as ridges and bifurcation patternscan then be used to encode the message, thanks to their directionality. Within these features of the constructed fingerprint, the secret message can be mapped out in a series of 2-D points with different polarities. These points represent the secrets and mimic the ridge endings and bifurcations of the fingerprint to be constructed, explains Sheng Li, an author of the study.

The secret message is translatied into a mathematical equation, which is then encoded into a series of directional 2-D points plotted out in the swirling areas of the fingerprint. Images: Fudan University/IEEE A secret message can be translated into a mathematical equation, and then encoded into a series of directional 2-D points plotted out in the swirls of a fingerprint.

After the secret is laid out in a series of 2-D points around the spirals, the continuous lines of the fingerprint are synthetically created. All the data is then merged to create a hologram of the fingerprint, which maintains the polarity and location of data points, safely harboring the secret. Only those who know the key, which is used to reconstruct the polynomial from the fingerprint, will be able to decipher the secret message.

Putting the concept aside, the most surprising thing we found is the robustness of the constructed fingerprint images, which are able to resist a range of attacks. We could still achieve relative high data extraction accuracy even if the...

Royole Beats Samsung and Others in Race to Create the First Foldable Smartphone "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Royole's bendy-screen FlexPai phone unveiled in China

A little-known California-based company has laid claim to creating the "world's first foldable phone".

Royole Corporation - a specialist in manufacturing flexible displays - unveiled the FlexPai handset at an event in Beijing. When opened, the device presents a single display measuring 7.8in (19.8cm) - bigger than many tablets. But when folded up, it presents three separate smaller screens - on the front, rear and spine of the device.

The six-year-old company said it would hold three "flash sales" to consumers in China on 1 November to offer the first product run.

[...] The launch has caught many industry watchers by surprise. It was widely believed Samsung or Huawei would be the first to sell such a device to the public.

[...] Another company-watcher added that he doubted the FlexPai would ever be produced in large numbers. "Royole has carried out several publicity stunts over the years to showcase its flexible OLED [organic light-emitting diode] displays," said Dr Guillaume Chansin from Irimitech Consulting. "The FlexPai is probably another stunt. Royole is building its first OLED factory and it is now trying to compete directly with other display manufacturers such as Samsung and LG."

Samsung has been talking about this kind of thing for years. But talk is cheap.

Google Wants to Be Your Media Mommy

The company suggest it may have to protect us from the bad things that elected Trump and speech that makes us feel unsafe.

Google might soon add its terms of service to the First Amendment. A leaked document from the tech giant argues that because of a variety of factors, including the election of Donald Trump, what we call the American tradition of free speech may no longer be viable. The report lays out how Google can serve as the worlds Good Censor, a stern mommy figure protecting us from harmful content and, by extension, dangerous behavior, like electing the wrong president again.

The document, which Google has officially characterized as research, is infuriatingly vague about whether any decisions have been made or action has been taken. So think of all this as a guidepost, like the Ghost of Christmas Future showing us potential doom ahead.

Google maintains 90 percent market dominance in the internet browsing space and processes some 3.5 billion searches a day. Its now talking about changing the rules so the freedom to speak will no...

The Moon Part 2 by Chris Spivey "IndyWatch Feed Europe"

This is the second of three intended articles about the Moon. And of course in Part 1 I think that it was proven that man has never set foot there.
Nevertheless, many researchers do believe that the moon is inhabited by aliens which is what I am going to be exploring in this article. However, I should point out that I am only putting forward the evidence and I do not necessarily agree with all of it.
Therefore, my reason for including such evidence is to make you aware of the facts and it is then down to you to decide what is credible and what isnt.
So lets start with Paul Hellyer.
Now interestingly enough, Paul Theodore Hellyer (born 6 August 1923) is according to Wikipedia -a Canadian engineer, politician, writer and commentator who has had a long and varied career. He is the longest serving current member of the Privy Council, just ahead of Prince Philip: SOURCE
He was also Canadas former Minister of Defence and Deputy Prime Minister to Pierre Trudeau.
So, straight away you will notice that the man is closely associated with two paedophiles. Therefore you have to ask yourselves can he be trusted?
Personally, I doubt it, but a YouTube video of a speech that he made in 2013 and which is unfortunately no longer available on the interwebb is fucking dynamite.
So, what makes it dynamite Spiv?
Well, for a start Hellyer says in the video that he knows of at least 4 alien races that have been visiting Earth for thousands of years. He then says that he knows of two alien races that are currently working with the US Government.
Hellyer then goes on to say that he believes that there should be full disclosure of 95 percent of information held by the worlds governments in regard to what they know about ETs, although, quite what is so terrible about the remaining 5 percent that it needs to be kept Top Secret is enough to make the mind boggle.
And this is where it gets really interesting. You see, Hellyer says that the reason that there is so little ET information released by governments in the know is because of those with a vested interest in keeping the information secret.
Moreover, those who he described as having a vested interest in alien matters are a cabal made up of what he terms as the three sisters The Council on Foreign Relations, The Bilderbergers, and The Trilateral Commission.
These three sisters, says Hellyer are acting in partnership with the International Banking Cartels, Oil Cartels, members of various Intelligence Organisations, and select members of the military, who together have become a shadow government of not only the United States, but much of the Western World.
Hellyer then continues:...

Its Not Just Who Votes, Its Who Counts the Votes "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

As a regular reader of WhoWhyWhy, you know that we have focused like a laser on election integrity and uncovered story after story about voter suppression in Georgia, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, and elsewhere. But important as all of this is, its only part of the bigger story.

It was Joseph Stalin who said that its not the people who vote that count, its the people who count the votes. The 2000 presidential election was a fantastic example of why that matters.

You all remember chads, hanging chads, punch cards, Votomatic machines, and how 540 votes and five Supreme Court justices changed America. What if those hanging chads had not been an accident? What if it wasnt the fault as was claimed at the time of incompetent voters who didnt know how to completely punch out a chad? What if the cards themselves had been engineered to fail?

In a never-before-told story that reads like a detective novel, investigative journalist Stephen Singular finds himself on the floor of the factory that made the infamous punch cards, in negotiations with 60 Minutes trying to get their help, and being given hundreds of unused punch cards to test as he tries to unravel the first great electoral mystery of the 21st century.

In this weeks WhoWhatWhy podcast, Singular talks to Jeff Schechtman about his just-published ebook Stolen Future: The Untold Story of the 2000 Election.

Singular takes us inside the machines that manufacture the perforated cards, whose precision, down to 1/5,000th of an inch, shaped the fate of the republic. Imagine that the war in Iraq could have been caused by a dull blade in one high-speed perforating machine in one factory, or maybe engendered by foul play.

Singular examines how the failure of punch cards not only impacted the 2000 election, but became the reason for states to place orders for hundreds of millions...

Cooking Eggs with Magnets in Motion "IndyWatch Feed Tech"

Its probably always going to be easier to just find some dry wood and make a cooking fire, but if youre ever in a real bind and just happen to have a bunch of magnets and a treadmill motor, this DIY induction cooktop could be your key to a hot breakfast.

For those not familiar with them, induction cooktops are a real thing. The idea stretches all the way back to the turn of the last century, and involves using a strong magnetic field to induce eddy currents in the metal of a cooking vessel. As [K&J Magnetics] explains, the eddy currents are induced in a conductor by changing magnetic fields nearby. The currents create their own magnetic field which opposes the magnetic field that created it. The resulting current flows through the conductor, heating it up. For their cooktop, they chose to spin a bunch of powerful neodymium magnets with alternating polarity using an old treadmill motor. The first try heated up enough to just barely cook an egg. Adding more magnets resulted in more heat, but the breakthrough came with a smaller pan. The video below shows the cooktop in action.

Its worth noting that commercial induction cooktops use coils and a high-frequency alternating current instead or rotating magnets. They also are notoriously fussy about cookware, too. So, kudos to [K&J] for finding success with such an expedient build. As a next step, wed love to see the permanent magnets replaced with small coils that can be electrically commutated, perhaps with a brushless motor controller.

Treason! Kyrsten Sinema Secretly Pledges to Dismantle the Constitution Upon Election to Senate "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

Kyrsten Siinema is a communist who is running for the Senate in Arizona against Martha McSally, the first woman F-16 pilot to see combat. Martha fought the taliban and risked her life defending America.

On the other hand, Sinema, posing as a centrist Democrat, wants your guns, your due process, your free speech to be overturned. She has secretly pledged to dimantle the Constitution upon her election to the Senate. She encouraged Americans to join the Taliban after 911 on my friend, Ernie Hancocks radio show. She hates conservatives and has said so about Christians in her own state of Arizona. She is for sanctuary cities that harbor illegal aliens who have murdered US citizens. She has facilitated illegal immigration. She was one of the 80 Democratic Congressmen, identified by Trevor Loudens in which these representatives belong to front groups for the American Communist Party or the Muslim Brotherhood, the largest terrorist organization in the world.

Greenwald: What the West Should Know About Bolsonaros Victory "IndyWatch Feed Nthamerica"

While the chattering classes in the West recoil in horror, and scream fascist! in unison, few are able to really grasp how and why Brazils stunning election result has come to pass. Just as with the ascendency of Donald Trump and the shock of the BREXIT referendum, Brazilian voters came out in opposition of what they perceived to be The Establishment. Whether they truly got what they intended to have is a matter still to be decided.

The following interview is with Glenn Greenwald, founder of The Intercept, and currently based in Rio de Janero, where he explores the key lessons of this stunning electoral victory by Jair Bolsonaro .

The right-wing authoritarian Jair Bolsonaro cruised to a 10-point victory on Sunday night in Brazil, becoming President-elect of the worlds fifth most-populous country and the most extremist leader in the democratic world. While some of the dynamics driving his victory are unique to Brazil, many of them are similar to prevailing political currents in North America, Eastern Europe and, increasingly, Western Europe. Bolsonaros victory is highly consequential in its own right: for the 210 million people who live within the borders of the country he and his tyrannical movement now dominate, as well as for the region and the globe. But beyond those consequences, there are valuable lessons to learn for all of the democratic world by understanding the sentiments that led Brazilians, en masse, to support someone who, a very short time ago, was relegated to the far fringes of political acceptability and whose ascension to power was unimaginable.
