BREAKING: U2 Cancels STL Concert Due to Violent Protests Police Unable to Protect Audience The Gateway Pundit

U2 cancelled their concert scheduled for Saturday in St. Louis because police are unable to provide protection for the audience following the Black Lives Matter violence Friday.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports:

Live Nation and U2 announced the news in a joint statement. We have been informed by the St. Louis Police Department that they are not in a position to provide the standard protection for our audience as would be expected for an event of this size. We have also been informed that local crowd security personnel would not be at full capacity.

In light of this information, we cannot in good conscience risk our fans safety by proceeding with tonights concert. As much as we regret having to cancel, we feel it is the only acceptable course of action in the current environment. Live Nation and U2

Remember the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing Booman Tribune

This is just a brief reminder that its the 54th anniversary of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. We should take a moment to remember Addie Mae Collins (age 14), Carol Denise McNair (age 11), Carole Robertson (age 14), and Cynthia Wesley (age 14), the four African-American girls who were killed in the attack while they were changing into their choir clothes. We should also remember the four Klansmen who were responsible: Thomas Edwin Blanton, Jr., Herman Frank Cash, Robert Edward Chambliss, and Bobby Frank Cherry.

I also want to mention another victim:

Virgil Ware, aged 13, was shot in the cheek and chest with a revolver in a residential suburb 15 miles north of the city. A 16-year-old white youth named Larry Sims fired the gun (given to him by another youth named Michael Farley) at Ware, who was sitting on the handlebars of a bicycle ridden by his brother. Sims and Farley had been riding home from an anti-integration rally which had denounced the church bombing. When he spotted Ware and his brother, Sims fired twice, reportedly with his eyes closed. (Sims and Farley were later convicted of second-degree manslaughter, although the judge suspended their sentences and imposed two years probation upon each youth.)

Id like to look back at this history and see it as little more than an unfortunate part of our past. But then I see stuff like this on a constant basis:

A St. Louis judge on Friday found former police officer Jason Stockley not guilty of first-degree murder in the 2011 shooting death of black motorist Anthony Lamar Smith.

This Court, in conscience, cannot say that the State has proven every element of murder beyond a reasonable doubt, or that the State has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant did not act in self-defense, St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson wrote in his ruling.

I didnt sit in the courtroom and hear all the evidence in this case. I do know that the officer stated that he was going to kill the motorist and then did in fact kill him. I know that there is footage that doesnt show the gun that was recovered, and that the gun had the officers DNA on it and not the DNA of Anthony Lamar Smith.

Without committing one way or the other in this particular case, I just see a lot of acquittals in cases where there seems like there should be a conviction. I see a lot of decisions not to prosecute when it seems like theres a strong case. And I see a lot of ticky-tack penalties and sancti...

Maybe Trump's Base Wants Insults, Not Policy Booman Tribune

I generally dont share the productions of my conspiratorial mind, but I can come up with wild theories just as well as any drunk at the end of the bar. I had an idea floating around the ole noggin during the early stages of the primaries that Donald Trump was working for the Russians and his mission was simply to derail the nomination of Jeb Bush. His secondary mission would be to go after any other candidates of an especially neoconservative bent, particularly Marco Rubio. He wasnt supposed to win. That idea was ridiculous, even for Trump. But if he could hurt the more anti-Russia wing of the GOP, that would be considered a big success.

I think my theory is probably too pat, and Ive never advanced it seriously, but it doesnt seem as outlandish today as it did before we knew the extent of the campaigns connections to Moscow. What we know for sure is that Trump launched his campaign as basically a traveling insult comic. His opponents were low-energy losers who had failed at everything theyd ever attempted. The more he belittled and humiliated other Republicans, the more the Republican primary voters loved him. This isnt to discount the other well known factor that helped him win loyal adherents. Obviously, his political incorrectness on race and gender attracted a deplorable set of born a**holes. But we risk forgetting how important his abuse of his Republican opponents was to his success if we focus solely on his racism and misogyny. When he called Ben Carson a brain-damaged sociopath and accused Ted Cruzs father of killing JFK and gave out Lindsey Grahams personal phone number, his fans heart swelled with adoration. Most famously, he had the gall to mock John McCain for getting captured, and it actually helped his cause. I suppose he got a two-fer when said there was something wrong with Carly Fiorinas face.

I was reminded of all this while reading Greg Sargents piece in todays Washington Post. Sargent explores the possible fallout from Trumps recent moves on immigration and whether they have the potential to cause an erosion of support among Trumps strongest supporters. And, I think, its quite possible that Trump wont see much erosion at all for the simple reason that people underestimate how much of his appeal came out of the joy he created when he abused and humiliated the Republican establishment.

Republican voters havent been giving high approval numbers to their congressional leaders for quite some time now, and this certainly hasnt improved with the failure to repeal Obamacare or move any...

All the World's a Stage Booman Tribune

I feel like my blogging has gotten painfully repetitive, and I apologize for that. My compulsion to keep hitting many of the same themes like a dead horse is driven by the persistence and strength of narratives that I feel are dangerously wrong. Sometimes its easier to see something after the fact, and if you go back to what I wrote just prior to President Trump making a deal with Schumer and Pelosi, youll see that I was saying that the time had come for the right to be sidelined.

In that piece, I used the Heritage Foundations September action plan as a stand-in for the right, so I was focused on a broad array of policies. It wasnt just the debt ceiling and a possible government shutdown, but also what to do with the FAA and CHIP and national flood insurance policy. The overall conclusion, though, was that the right was still making impossible demands on Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan. By extension, they were making impossible demands on Donald Trump, too. And it was getting late enough in the game that it just wasnt going to be possible to humor the right anymore. It was time for the entire Republican leadership to pivot and start working with the Democrats.

When it actually happened, the next day, it was of course disguised and filled with sideshow narratives about Trump selling Ryan and McConnell out, but the truth was that Ryan and McConnell were every bit at the end of their ropes as the president was, and they all needed to pivot. To be honest, I had been thinking about that moment for almost a year. Back in October of 2016, when I still thought the Access Hollywood tape had destroyed any chance Trump had, I was already thinking about September 2017 and what it would do to the Republican Speaker when he or she had to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a shutdown for President Clinton.

My assumption at that point was that Ryan would not seek to be reelected Speaker if Trump lost and would not succeed if he tried.

Again, were assuming here that Clinton wins the presidency and the Republicans retain a narrower majority in the House.

The Republicans will search around for someone who is willing to take the job of passing spending bills that President Clinton wont veto. But the standard theyll set for their candidate is that they wont pass spending bills that President Clinton will sign. Only a fool would volunteer for such an assignment, and only someone dishonest could fulfill both roles at once.

The House Republican caucus will struggle to find a candidate and they will struggle even more to unite around that candidate. It may very well prove impossible, but, if so, t...

Trump's Retreat From a Blind Alley Booman Tribune

Its admittedly hard to read a man like Donald Trump. He isnt consistent. His word is not good. His comprehension of some of the basics of our system of government is shockingly low. His understanding of history, both recent and distant, is horribly flawed. His grasp of what is easy and difficult doesnt appear to exist. He beat all his political opponents without seeming to have a realistic and overarching strategy, but more through a series of tactical battles that involved as many big losses as big wins. He lives in the moment and doesnt follow even a basic script. Hes driven by lower emotions and is blinded to larger concerns.

So, it wasnt really possible to confidently predict that he would not want to deport the Dreamers. His reaction to Charlottesville and his pardon of Joe Arpaio could have legitimately led people to conclude that his racial animosity would outweigh his compassion and that his strategic vision was focused on shoring up the support of his racist base.

I perhaps am willing to give him too much credit for strategic thinking, although Im wary of underestimating him after having done so for too long. But, I saw some of his racial misbehavior in August as a potential prophylactic against the backlash he knew was coming in September when he knew he would have to back down on DACA and the border wall and strike a deal with the Democrats on fiscal and budgetary issues.

After all, the backlash was very predictable:

Pop Culture is Far Ahead of Washington When it Comes to Monopoly Politics The Intercept

In best-selling author James Pattersons latest novel The Store, a writer and his family go undercover to write the expos of the century, about a dominant corporation that insinuates its way into peoples lives, homogenizing society under its vision. Its a website that initially sold books and then branched out to providing other goods and services.

Patterson calls it TheStore.com. But we all know what hes referring to.

I think people are interested because everybody is using these sites, including Amazon, said Patterson in an interview. Most people find them interesting and some find them troubling.

Often, people hold both views at the same time, and that internal conflict makes them ripe for pop-culture interrogation. Popular entertainment habitually reflects the preoccupations of society. After the financial crisis, a wave of books and films presented financiers as amoral villains: The Big Short, The Wolf of Wall Street, George Clooneys Money Monster, even Oliver Stones long-awaited follow-up to Wall Street. But the national mood has shifted. America has become more wary of Silicon Valley, and political movements on the left and right have turned against it. And these concerns have propelled a diverse set of narratives, from thrillers to comedies to animated features.

While lacking coherence, this trend may prove more impactful than the recent political focus on giant tech platforms. When Slates Franklin Foer or USCs Jonathan Taplin write well-received books warning about tech monopolies, it serves an important public policy function. When conservative voices call for Google to be regulated as a public utility, it creates space for a trans-partisan alliance on weakening the power of the tech titans. When a Google-funded think tank fires researchers critical of Google, it raises questions about who truly controls the flow of information in our democracy.

But when a transparent facsimile of Amazon or Facebook or Google pops up in the movie youve devoted Friday night to watching, it attracts a wider aud...

Puts the light out;

Windless, starless night.

DON'T EXCITE THE TODDLER! No More Mister Nice Blog

So I assume you know about this story from The Wall Street Journal:

A U.S. congressman contacted the White House this week trying to broker a deal that would end WikiLeaks founder Julian Assanges U.S. legal troubles in exchange for what he described as evidence that Russia wasnt the source of hacked emails published by the antisecrecy website during the 2016 presidential campaign.

The proposal [was] made by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R., Calif.), in a phone call Wednesday with White House Chief of Staff John Kelly....

The possible deala term used by Mr. Rohrabacher during the Wednesday phone callwould involve a pardon of Mr. Assange or something like that, Mr. Rohrabacher said. In exchange, Mr. Assange would probably present a computer drive or other data-storage device that Mr. Rohrabacher said would exonerate Russia....

A Trump administration official confirmed Friday that Mr. Rohrabacher spoke to Mr. Kelly about the plan involving Mr. Assange. Mr. Kelly told the congressman that the proposal was best directed to the intelligence community, the official said.
This is a big deal. Alert the president!

Actually, no -- the president wasn't alerted:
Mr. Kelly didnt make the president aware of Mr. Rohrabachers message, and Mr. Trump doesnt know the details of the proposed deal, the official said.
Amazing -- not only is the president of the United States so easily excited, so easily led astray by pro-Russia fifth columnists, that his chief of staff believes he has to be shielded from information like this, as if he's a giant toddler, but the staff openly acknowledges to a major newspaper that this information has been concealed from the president.

Do Kelly and his subordinates think they can conceal the concealment from Trump? Do they think he'll never find out that he was never told about this?

Who knows? We recently read this:
... Mr. Trump does not have a web browser on his phone, and does not use a laptop, so he was dependent on aides like Stephen K. Bannon, his former chief strategist, to hand-deliver printouts of articles from conservative media outlets.

Now Mr. Kelly has thinned out his package of printouts so much that Mr. Trump plaintively asked a friend recently where The Daily Caller and Breitbart were.
So maybe Kelly won't include any stories about this in Trump's press packet. But wait -- what about TV? Kelly has acknowledged to the media that he can't prevent Trump from watching copious amounts of television.

I imagine this as a bad sitcom episode -- Kelly urging...

Proof for Pardon: Julian Assange Ready to Spill the Beans on DNC in Exchange for Pardon The Gateway Pundit

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) met with White House Chief of Staff John Kelly this week about a potential deal with Julian Assange on the Wikileaks Podesta documents.

Assange has repeatedly said Russia is not linked to the leak of thousands of John Podesta emails before the election.

Julian Assange reportedly told Rohrabacher he is ready to provide information that Russia did not hack the DNC.

Last month Rep. Rohrabacher told Sean Hannity he was 99% certain that the Russian collusion narrative is a total lie.

Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller who is investigating whether President Trump colluded with Russia during the 2016 election refuses to speak with Julian Assange.
He must be afraid of what he might find.

The Daily Caller reported:

California Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher spoke to White House chief of staff John Kelly Wednesday about a potential deal with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in exchange for info that exonerates Russia of hacking allegations, according to a Friday report from The Wall Street Journal

The Journal reported that Rohrabacher spoke with Kelly in order to strike a deal in which the U.S. would drop the probe. The California congressman told TheDC that Assange, who promises never to reveal sources, told Rohrabacher during their August meeting that he could prove that Russia wasnt behind the hacking and dissemination of emails from the Democratic National Committee during the 2016 election.

U.S. intelligence has pointed the finger at Russian intelligence services for the DNC email leak. Kelly told Rohrabacher that he should go to the American intelligence community with his proposal, according to the Journal report.

Who Supports Medicare For All? And Who Doesn't? DownWithTyranny!

A couple of days ago, Rick Nolan, a progressive congressman from a district in Minnesota Trump won (54.2-38.6%) tweeted that he and John Conyers had introduced one of the first Medicare-for-All bills in 1978. "America, he wrote, is ready!" Here's a clip of Bernie explaining why the U.S. should aim for single-payer healthcare in 1992. Harvard's School of Public Health conducted a poll for Politico on Americans' top priorities for Congress for the rest of the year.
When asked how important each of ten domestic issues being widely discussed in Washington should be for Congress, the top priorities for Republicans are to revisit repealing and replacing Obamacare (53%) and reduce the budget deficit and government spending (36%). The top priorities for Democrats are to take action to lower prescription drug prices (51%) and continue the investigation of Russian involvement in the 2016 election (44%).

What I found most interesting about the chart from the poll is how Democrats and independents are so in synch on so many issues. Republicans are consistently the odd-man-out on the issues Americans are most concerned about, not just on healthcare but across the whole policy spectrum. And this is very much in line with what other recent polls have found. Look at this one from a recent PPP survey:

Republican Secretary of State Finds Voter Fraud In Oregon The Gateway Pundit

Now that a Republican holds the Secretary Of State office in Oregon, voter fraud can actually be investigated.

After defeating power tripping leftist Brad Avakian for the seat last year, Dennis Richardson has uncovered several cases of voter fraud.

From the Secretary Of State newsletter (which, oddly, I did not receive when now-governor Kate Brown held that office):

My office is utilizing new technological tools that will improve election integrity. Through complex data matching techniques, the Elections Division identified 46 voters in the November 8, 2016 election who appear to have cast ballots in both Oregon and another state. Also identified, were ballots submitted under the names of six deceased Oregon voters and two registered Oregon voters who each cast two ballots in Oregon.

Although there is no evidence that these fraudulent ballots impacted the outcome of any contest, no level of voter fraud is acceptable.

Evidence supporting these findings has been turned over to the Attorney Generals office for criminal investigation and prosecution. Intentionally voting twice is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and up to a $125,000 fine.

Every Oregonian who is eligible to vote should be able to vote. We must use all tools available to ensure election integrity so that the votes of those who are eligible to vote are not diluted by those who are breaking the law.

The timing of this announcement comes just 3 days after President Trumps Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity ponied up $500 to get Oregons voter roll list, which anyone can get for $500.

This marks a change in tone for Secretary Richardson, who previously declared to President Trump that there was voter fraud in the state. In February of this year, a mere 6 weeks after being sworn into his new job, Richardson said Im pleased to report that in Oregon we have reviewed the processes and we are confident that voter fraud in last Novembers election did not occur in Oregon, Richardson wrote to Trump. In short, elections in Oregon cannot be hacked.

Oregon voters can hope that this is only the beginning of the investigation into voter fraud in the st...

Hillary Clinton Doesnt Understand Why the Corporate Media Is So Bad The Intercept

Hillary Clinton has every right to be infuriated by the performance of the press during the 2016 election. In her new book What Happened, Clinton mainly indicts television news for abandoning coverage of any actual public policy issues in favor of its berserk obsession with her use of a private email server. Subsidiary malefactors include Matt Lauer, for asking her about almost nothing else at NBCs September 2016 Commander-in-Chief Forum on national security, and the New York Times, for its spasmodic freak-out when FBI Director James Comey declared he was re-opening the Bureaus investigation into her emails just before the election.

But heres where Clinton and I part ways:

In an interview Tuesday, she said, I dont think the press did their job in this election, with very few exceptions. She believes the problem is something new, and the fault of bad individuals.

Clintons problem is obvious: At 69 years old and after a lifetime in politics, she somehow doesnt understand what the corporate medias job is.

Generally speaking, when people fail to do their jobs in a spectacular way, they get fired. When they do their jobs, theyre not.

Who exactly in the corporate media has been fired for failing to provide the United States with in-depth, sober, fair-minded coverage of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran and the minutia of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act?

No one.

Which suggests that the media did do its job. Moreover, I think the media performed incredibly well.

The New York Times, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, et al., are gigantic corporations in most cases owned by even larger ones. And the job of giant corporations is not to inform American citizens about reality. Its not to play a hallowed role in the history of a self-governing republic. Its to make as much profit as possible. That in turn means the corporate media will never, ever be liberal in any genuine sense, and will be hostile to all politicians who feint in that direction.

From that perspective, the medias performance in 2016 was a shining, glorious success. As Les Moonves effused just as the primaries were starting, Trumps campaign was good for us economically. Go Donald! Keep getting out there! The entire Hieronymus Bosch-like nightmare, said Moonves, may not be good for America, but its damn good for CBS. CNN made $1 billion in profits during the election year, far more than ever before.

With that in mind, read this passage from Clintons book about her...

The North Sea Wind Power Hub bensozia

A consortium of German, Dutch and Danish power companies has hatched a bold scheme to profitably extract even more wind power from the North Sea: build artificial islands in the shallow area known as the Dogger Bank. Building islands is expensive even in seas only a few meters deep, but building wind turbines and other infrastructure on land is so much cheaper than building it in water that the idea might still pay off. Ars Technica:
North Sea Wind Power Hub is a proposed energy island complex to be built in the middle of the North Sea as part of a European system for sustainable electricity. One or more Power Link artificial islands will be created at the northeast end of the Dogger Bank, a relatively shallow area in the North Sea, just outside the continental shelf of the United Kingdom and near the point where the borders between the territorial waters of Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark come together. Dutch, German, and Danish electrical grid operators are cooperating in this project to help develop a cluster of offshore wind parks with a capacity of several gigawatts, with interconnections to the North Sea countries. Undersea cables will make international trade in electricity possible.

According to this plan, the first artificial island will have an area of 6 square kilometers. Thousands of wind turbines will be placed around the island, with short alternating-current links to the island. On the island itself, power converters will change the alternating current to direct current that will be carried to the mainland via undersea cables. The project is to be completed around 2050.
The scale of this plan is impressive. The first island and surrounding turbines should generate around 30 Gigawatts of power; with a chain of islands that could eventually rise to 100 GW, enough for 100 million people. By comparison the largest wind power farm in the world today generates 0.63 GW. All of this infrastructure would be out of sight of land.

Be Humble bensozia

Russ Roberts is worried about the state of the US, especially the degree of division and hatred between the factions. His advice for all of us:

When the world is increasingly uncivilized, take a step toward civility.

Dont be part of the positive feedback problem. When someone yells at you on the internet or in an email or across the dinner table, turn the volume down rather than up. Dont respond in kind to the troll. Stay calm. Its not as much fun as yelling or humiliating your opponent with a clever insult, but its not worth it. It takes a toll on you and its bad for the state of debate. And you might actually change someones mind.

Be humble. Shakespeare had it right: There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Youre inevitably a cherry-picker, ignoring the facts and evidence that might challenge the certainty of your views. The world is a complex place. Truth is elusive. Dont be so confident. You shouldnt be.

Midnight Meme Of The Day DownWithTyranny!

by Noah

This one is just a simple depiction of what counts for logic and sanity in Trump's Mad White House. 10,000+ patriotic trans military people are to be banned by a man of doubtful loyalties. Meanwhile, the Republican ideal is represented by a convicted wackjob ex-sheriff who dresses his prisoners in pink underwear (think about the implications of that one), feeds them gruel, sleeps them in 120+ degree tents, denies medical attention and "lets" them die. Need I go on? Sheriff Arpaio is a sadist, not unlike the sick man who pardoned him and even wants to get his conviction vacated.

Perhaps, what Trump likes about Arpaio the most is that Arpaio would do great running a prison camp in Siberia. It could also be their mutual love of their press clippings, their mutual birther insanity, the blatant racism... Arpaio and Trump are a match made in Hell. It's a love story, an evil, fascist love story.

Seeing Is Not Believing LewRockwell

How do steel and concrete turn into dust before our very eyes?

Why dont our brains acknowledge what we are seeing? Because of this: This is not possible, by definition.

Seeing is not believing.

Wild theories abound. None gets traction.

Here is a wild theory. It is supported by impossible videos. The videos are real, however. Aye, theres the rub!

The Right-Wingers Speech Code LewRockwell

If the left really took itself seriously, or, to put it another way, the right was interested in engaging in the kind of silliness that is the lefts enterprise of choice, the following terms would have entered our vocabulary long ago.  Some of these terms have actually appeared, but because they militate against the lefts ideological vision and political agenda, they have gained very little traction. Others needed to be created.

For the benefit of all right-wingers, I offer their own Politically Correct (Politically Incorrect?) speech code, chock-full of examples of micro-aggressions!

I.CAUCASOPHOBIA/EUROPHOBIA: Throughout the contemporary world, particularly the Western world, overt manifestations of this animus toward Caucasians or people of European decent, i.e. whites, are in ample supply.  Calls for white genocide and the like, affirmative action, and racially-motivated attacks against whites by nonwhites are some of the most obvious illustrations of Caucasophobia.

Yet this endemic disease expresses itself covertly as well.  Being subconscious, covert Caucasophobia is potentially more invidious than its self-conscious counterpart.  The reality and ubiquity of this covert Caucasophobia is established by way of two phenomena: institutional or structural Caucasophobia, on the one hand, and, on the other, the countless, everyday micro-aggressions committed by way of the seemingly most innocuous uses of the English language.

Time to buy old US gold coins

That there is indeed institutional Caucasophobia is borne out by the following considerations:

Whites constitute about two-thirds of Americas population, and yet less than 10% of all professional basketball players and about 20% (or less) of all professional football players.  Whites also remain sorely underrepresented among professional boxers.

The resurgence of the heroin epidemic, along with that of the opiate epidemic, has had a disproportionate impact upon young whites, young white males in particular.

Whites are overrepresented among those in America who commit suicide.

Historically, Americas serial killers have been disproportionately white.

Only two-thirds or so of Americans are white, and yet 100% of the Italian, Russian, and Irish mobs were white.

This list could be added to ad infinitum. Institutional or structural Caucasophobia is real.

As for daily language, the following micro-aggressions betray a speakers Caucasophobia, however subconscious it may be:

I have nothing against white people. I date whites, and som...

If Government Is Enthusiastic About Something LewRockwell

Whenever the government is rabidly enthusiastic about something you can be reasonably sure you shouldnt be.

Electric cars are being pushed for all kinds of reasons, none of them beneficial to us. If that werent the case, then it wouldnt be necessary to push (mandate, subsidize) electric cars. They would be embraced as naturally as freely as a better smartphone or more-delicious (and cheaper) hamburger.

Of course, it is necessary to push them. The why gets interesting.

One of the reasons for the electric car push has to do with their very high cost. Which if electric cars are to become mass-market cars necessarily entails more and higher debt for the average person.

Government and the crony capitalist businesses which use government to enrich themselves at our expense  love debt. And not merely because it is profitable to keep people perpetually paying although that by itself is a tremendous motivating (and corrupting) force.

More profoundly than mere greed, debt keeps people under control. Keeps them cowed, submissive. Unlikely to rock the boat, either at work or otherwise. The man who knows the mortgage has got to be paid next month else his family may soon not have a roof over their heads is much more apt to do as he is told.

Time to buy old US gold coins

For the next 30 years, ideally. The heavier the debt load, the better . . . from a certain point-of-view.

And just like home loan debt, car debt hanging over the debtors head restricts and constrains. It keeps the debtor insecure.

There is real freedom in not having debt. Economic freedom is freedom. The person in debt is in a very real way a slave even if his chains are financial rather than made of iron. He is compelled to work  . . . in order to pay.

He has masters whom he fears and so obeys.

If you own your home or your car ideally both you have far more liberty, are much less constrained. If your employer imposes a vile new policy (pee in this cup, under supervision, to prove to us that you are not a druggie) or the job is merely disagreeable, you are at liberty to quit and find a new job in a way that a debt slave never can be.

Without monthly payments, it is possible to live comfortably on not very much. This is anathema, of course, to the debt-mongers inside and outside of government.

Back to electric cars.

They are very expensive. The least pricey ones like the Nissan Leaf sticker around $30,000 to start. The majority are closer to $40,000 ...

A Read-My-Lips Moment for Trump? LewRockwell

Having cut a deal with Democrats for help with the debt ceiling, will Trump seek a deal with Democrats on amnesty for the Dreamers in return for funding for border security?

The answer to that question, raised in my column a week ago, is in. Last night, President Donald Trump cut a deal with Chuck and Nancy for amnesty for 800,000 recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program who came here illegally as youngsters, in return for Democratic votes for more money for border security.

According to preening Minority Leader Pelosi, the agreement contains not a dime for Trumps Wall, and the Dreamers are to be put on a long glide path to U.S. citizenship.

Trump denies this is amnesty, and says the Wall comes later.

Buy Gold at Discounted Prices

Fallout? Among the most enthusiastic of Trump backers, disbelief, disillusionment and wonderment at where we go from here.

Trumps debt-ceiling deal cut the legs out from under the GOP budget hawks. But amnesty would pull the rug out from under all the folks at those rallies who cheered Trumps promise to preserve the country they grew up in from this endless Third World invasion.

For make no mistake. If amnesty is granted for the 800,000, that will be but the first wave. There are reasons no country has a rule that if you sneak in as a minor youre a citizen, writes Mickey Kaus, author of The End of Equality, in The Washington Post.

Wed be inviting the world. (An amnesty) would have a knock-on effect. Under chain migration rules established in 1965 new citizens can bring in their siblings and adult children, who can bring in their siblings and in-laws until whole villages have moved to the United States.

(T)odays 690,000 dreamers would quickly become millions of newcomers who may well be low-skilled and who would almost certainly include the parents who brought them the ones who in theory are at fault.

Trump is risking a breach in the dam. If the populists who provided him with decisive margins in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania feel betrayed, its hard to blame them.

Why did Trump do it? Clearly, he relished the cheers he got for the debt ceiling deal and wanted another such victory. And with the rampant accusations of a lack of compassion for his cancellation of the temporary Obama administration amnesty, he decided he had had enough heat.

It is not easy to stand up for long to the gale force winds of hostile commentary that blow constantly through this city.

Trumps capitulation, if that is what...

Unprecedented Global Risk LewRockwell

Risk involves the chance an investments actual return will differ from the expected return. Risk includes the possibility of losing some or all of the original investment. (Investopedia)

So there we have it. Risk means that you can lose part or all of the investment. Normally valuations take risk into account. But is the world really valuing the following risks accurately:

A VERY RISKY WORLD

Wars

  • North Korea South Korea USA Japan China Russia incl. nuclear war
  • Ukraine USA Russia
  • Syria Israel USA ISIS Al-Qaeda Saudi Arabia, Yemen Iran, Iraq etc.
  • China India Pakistan Afghanistan USA
  • Plus many more

Buy Silver at Discounted Prices

Civil war and terrorism

  • In most countries including USA and Europe

Economic risk

  • Global debt $230 trillion can never be repaid, nor financed when rates normalised
  • Unfunded global liabilities $250 trillion will never be honoured
  • Central banks balance sheets $20 trillion all insolvent
  • USA insolvent only supported by overvalued dollar and military
  • Chinas debt explosion from $2 trillion to $40 trillion since 2000 massive bubble
  • Most industrialised and emerging countries only survive with QE untenable
  • Interest rates at zero or below in 20 countries unsustainable
  • Paper money system currencies going to zero.

Financial risk

  • Global derivatives of $1.5 quadrillion will all implode as counterparties fail
  • Bankrupt European banking system unlikely to survive
  • Over-leveraged global banking system 20x to 50x leverage
  • Bubbles in most asset classes Stocks, bonds, property

Political risk

  • USA has a lame duck president risk of irrational or no actions
  • EU elite unelected and unaccountable destroying Europe
  • Trend of globalisation and socialism very dangerous for global stability

The above list of risks is certainly not conclusive.

To summarise in one sentence: The world is facing risk of major (nuclear) wars, economic and financial collapse, as well as political and social upheaval. The realisation of just one of these risks would be enough to change the world for a very long time. We live in a totally interconnected world and the danger is that the domino effect will trigger one event after the next until all the risks become reality.

But the world has become totally immune to risk. No market has priced in these risks. If they did, we would not have stock, bond and property markets at historical highs and overvaluations. Centra...

The Elaborate Underworld of Mayan Pyramids LewRockwell

For the first time in 50 years, the ruins of Chichn Itz are being investigated by archaeologists. The team from the Great Maya Aquifer Project aim to discover if local legends of an elaborate underworld are true.

Built more than 1,000 years ago, the ancient Mayan pyramid in Mexicos Yucatan Peninsula will be explored using a modified ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to locate passageways and rooms in El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulcan.

Something on this scale has never been attempted, but were confident that it will help us understand this site in a way that wasnt possible before, Great Maya Aquifer Project Director Guillermo de Anda, told National GeographicWith this data, I believe we will conclusively find out if the local legends of an elaborate underworld are true.

Instant Access to Current Spot Prices & Interactive Charts

The radar will also be used to search the surrounding area of Chichn Itz for tunnels and caves, using kayak-mounted sonar to explore underground water systems, spoken of in Maya oral history but never confirmed.

In the end, well be able to combine data from these imaging tools and produce a millimeter-scale, 3D super map of the entire site, above and below the ground, Corey Jaskolski, who is digitally preserving the discovery, told National Geographic.

The project is currently underway, with the first two weeks already producing the discovery of two submerged caves and several dry caves, one of which contains a stone carving of a female figure.

GPR has discovered a number of anomalies surrounding a chamber in El Castillo housing the Red Jaguar Thrones.

All Dems Want Peace And All Republicans Want War, Right? No DownWithTyranny!

Early this summer it looked like the House would vote on Barbara Lee's attempt to repeal and replace an outdated Bush-era Authorization for the Use of Military Force. But then Paul Ryan, secretly-- in the dead of night-- pulled the amendment out of the 2018 Defense Appropriations Bill that had previously been agreed to. Lee's office: "In a desperate and undemocratic attempt to kill Barbara's AUMF repeal amendment, Speaker Paul Ryan stripped it from the Appropriations bill in the middle of the night without even bringing it up for a vote. This shows the extreme tactics Ryan will use to uphold the status quo and avoid debating endless wars. It shows an underhanded move to make Barbara's amendment vanish into thin air. And it shows a new low for the Speaker that requires us to come together and take action... Congress has been missing in action on matters of war and peace for nearly 16 years. What is Paul Ryan afraid of? Why won't he let members of Congress honor their constitutional responsibility to debate and vote on U.S. military intervention abroad? Paul Ryan should be ashamed of himself. This isn't leadership, this is autocracy. If we are going to continue to send our brave servicemembers into battle zones to fight endless wars, Congress must have the courage to take up this debate. With your help, we'll make it clear to Paul Ryan that the American people want Congress to act to stop endless war."

Wednesday Rand Paul gave it a try in the Senate. He did little better than Lee had. Senator Paul had hoped "to repeal the war authorizations that underpin the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as military action in a slew of other countries." His amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act was killed 61-36. It wasn't a Democrat vs Republica...

REPORT: General Kelly Blocking Trump From Negative Reports on DACA The Gateway Pundit

Social media was set ablaze after House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer released a statement following their working dinner with President Trump Thursday night claiming they reportedly struck a deal shielding DACA recipients from deportation.

The two leading Democrats left the White House and released the following statement.
No border wall
And amnesty for DREAMERs

That would break two Trump campaign promises right there.

White House Spox immediately refuted the statement.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders sent out a tweet after Pelosi and Schumer issued a statement. She said, While DACA and border security were both discussed, excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to.

Since Thursday night there has been much confusion on Trumps next move regarding DACA. His tweets sound more like Marco Rubios as he softens from his original anti-amnesty stance, angering his core base.

Steve Bannon is no longer in the White House and Trumps top advisers Jared and Ivanka, General Kelly, and Globalist Gary Cohn have shown to be sympathetic to Dreamers.

A new report by Axios is claiming General Kelly is shielding President Trump from any negative reports on his DACA stance. Staffers can no longer walk into the Oval Office and hand Trump a Breitbart article or a printout of tweets showing how angry his supporters are over amnesty.

The only way staffers can meet with President Trump is through General Kelly which means they have to submit an official, documented, request to meet with him.

Axios reports:

He (Trump) reads his morning news clips and briefing materials, which are managed by Staff Secretary Rob Porter, under the guidance of Kelly. And during the day its not possible for a staff member to sneak a story onto Trumps desk that might rile him up and turn him in a wildly different direction in an instant.

Staff who oppose the moderate immigration turn no longer have unfettered access to Trump, and nor do allies on the outside who, in the first six months of the administration, used to send text messages t...

During the latest episode of Clintons campaign-related podcast With Her,the former Democratic nominee discussed the research that found a negative correlation between a womens professional success and her likability

They were selling T-shirts and mugs at the Republican [National] Convention with Trump holding my head. Nobody said a word. Not a word!

Of course, this is a lie.
There is no evidence anywhere that this occurred near the RNC or at ANY Trump rallies.

What Happens If Seor Trumpanzee Refuses To Recertify The Iran Nuclear Deal? DownWithTyranny!

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is the fancy way of referring to the Iran nuclear deal agreed to in July, 2015b by Iran, the U.S., the E.U, Russia, Germany, France, the U.K. and China. It gave Iran relief from U.S., E.U, and UN nuclear-related economic sanctions in return for Iran agreeing to monitored and verified elimination of its stockpile of medium-enriched uranium, while cutting its stockpile of low-enriched uranium by 98%, and reducing by about two-thirds the number of its gas centrifuges for 13 years and not to building any new heavy-water facilities and limiting Uranium-enrichment activities to a single facility using first-generation centrifuges. At the time, the NY Times editorial board wrote that the agreement was "potentially one of the most consequential accords in recent diplomatic history, with the ability not just to keep Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon but also to reshape Middle East politics." And then in lumbering Seor Trumpanzee. Congressional Republicans were hostile to the agreement even before Trump's election. In fact, they had vowed to kill it even before the wording was released.

A NYTimes analysis by Jennifer Steinhauer made it clear that Republican opposition to the agreement was "born of genuine distaste for the deal's details, inherent distrust of President Obama, intense loyalty to Israel and an expansive view of the role that sanctions have played beyond preventing Iran's nuclear abilities." Conservatives-- including AIPAC-owned members of Congress like Chuck Schumer-- have never given up their hope to kill the deal. Trump's intense emotional hostility to the agreement is belied by his Regime having certified a month and a half ago, in July, that Iran had upheld its end...

FBI Initially Asked Hillarys Permission to Access Her Blackberry Emails The Gateway Pundit

Thanks to conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, new information has been released showing that the FBI primarily relied on consensual access, or asking Hillary permission to view her Blackberry emails rather than use search warrants.

The Washington Free Beacon reports:

The FBI released a previously undisclosed declaration filed in federal court Wednesday evening. The declaration contains new information regarding grand jury subpoenas issued in the investigation into Clintons private server.

Watchdog groups Cause of Action and Judicial Watch successfully convinced a federal judge to order the release of the declaration submitted ex parte and in camera in the civil case by E.W. Priestap, who supervised the Clinton investigation at the FBI. Cause of Action and Judicial Watch are suing the State Department and National Archives for violations of the Federal Records Act, for failing to properly preserve Clintons emails.

Priestaps declaration was a supplemental filing related to the grand jury subpoenas and was only seen by federal judge James Boasberg and the governments lawyers. The newly released declaration does not reveal the exact language of the grand jury subpoenas that were issued in the case, making it difficult to decipher the specific actions taken by the FBI.

Priestaps declaration also reveals grand jury subpoenas were issued to wireless companies Cingular and then its successor AT& T Wireless and the maker of Blackberry devices, RIM (Research in Motion) indicating the investigation was criminal in nature.

The FBI initially asked Hillary permission to obtain her emails rather than use search warrants. The FBI claimed it had a hard time proving probable cause that classified information was on her non government email accounts she used with her private server.

FBI sought to obtain all identified email communications that were transmitted or stored upon former Secretary Clintons private email servers. These investigative efforts consisted of obtaining email repositories through consent of former Secretary Clinton, her representatives, former members of her staff, the State Department, and numerous other government agencies with which the Secretary communicated,...

Saudi Arabian Schoolbook Declares the Hour Will Come After Muslims Kill the Jews The Gateway Pundit

Saudi Arabia is in hot water for having kids use schoolbooks that attacks Christians as unbelievers and says that the day of resurrection will not arrive until the Muslims of the world have killed all of the Jews.

The official textbook, which is published by the Saudi Ministry of Education, dictates to 5th graders that the resurrection day will be obvious due to a series of signs, the Hour will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews, and Muslims will kill the Jews.

According to the U.S.-based advocacy group Human Rights Watch, Saudi Arabias curriculum relative to their religious studies courses [contain] hateful and incendiary language toward religions and Islamic traditions that do not adhere to its interpretation of Sunni Islam.

Breitbart reports:

Human Rights Watch undertook a comprehensive review of school religion books published by the Saudi Education Ministry for the 2016-17 school year. The curriculum, titled al-tawhid, or Monotheism, comprises 45 textbooks and student workbooks for the primary, middle, and secondary education levels.

The September 11, 2001 jihadist attacks that killed some 3,000 Americans provoked public outrage at the incendiary language in Saudi schoolbooks after it became known that 15 of the 19 hijackers of 9/11 were Saudi citizens. Saudi officials promised at the time to expunge the abusive language from its curriculum. A decade and a half later, however, some of this insulting and dangerous content is still a part of Saudi texts, HRW declared.

In February 2017, Saudis education minister acknowledged the need for a broader curriculum overhaul but offered no specifics as to when if ever such an overhaul would take place.

As early as first grade, students in Saudi schools are being taught hatred toward all those perceived to be of a different faith or school of thought, said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. The lessons in hate are reinforced with each following year.

NO, THAT CALIFORNIA LAW PROBABLY WON'T FORCE TRUMP TO RELEASE HIS TAX RETURNS No More Mister Nice Blog

This is amusing:

The California State Assembly on Thursday passed a bill that would require all presidential candidates to release their tax returns prior to being placed on the states ballot.

The bill, called the Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act, passed the state Assembly on a 42-18 vote and will now head to the state Senate for a concurrence vote before being sent to the governor for his signature.
You'd think this would force President Trump to come clean, assuming it passes the state senate and is signed by Governor Jerry Brown. But there's less to the bill than this summary suggests.

If you take a look at the text of the bill, you'll see that it specifically limits this requirement to presidential primaries:
SB 149, as amended, McGuire. Presidential primary elections: ballot access....

6883. (a) Notwithstanding any other law, the Secretary of State shall not print the name of a candidate for President of the United States on a primary election ballot, unless the candidate, within a reasonable timeframe established by the Secretary of State, files with the Secretary of State a copy of every income tax return the candidate filed with the Internal Revenue Service in the five most recent taxable years.

(b) If the candidate has not filed his or her income tax return with the Internal Revenue Service for the tax year immediately preceding the primary election, he or she shall submit a copy of the income tax return to the Secretary of State within five days of filing the return with the Internal Revenue Service.
Donald Trump is an incumbent president with extremely high approval ratings within his party. How likely is it that he'll even have a serious primary challenger in 2020, assuming he's still in office and decides to run?

And if he does have a primary challenger and still has no intention of releasing his tax returns ("Sorry, folks, this audit is taking forever!"), he just needs to obtain ballot access for a stand-in candidate who does release his or her tax returns, and who promises to ask any delegates he or she wins to vote for Trump at the convention. This candidate could be anyone -- it could be someone who's legally changed his name to, say, Ronald J. Trump, just to be sure the voters understand the "vote for me if you want to vote for him" premise.

The bill doesn't cover the general election, presumably because, as Ballotpedia notes, "California state law stipulates that 'the secretary of state shall cause the names of the candidates for p...

The Story: Life, the World, Now, You, and Me WORDVIRUS

Hi. Im Umair. I want to tell you a little story about life, death, meaning, purpose, happiness, you, me, the world, and why I founded Eudaimonia & Co.

BREAKING Federal Judge in Chicago Blocks Trump From Defunding Sanctuary Cities The Gateway Pundit

A Federal Judge in Chicago blocked the Trump administrations rules requiring sanctuary cities to cooperate with immigration agents in order to get public funding in nationwide injunction, the Chicago Tribune reports.

U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber said in a 41-page ruling that the city has shown a likelihood of success in arguing that AG Sessions exceeded his authority.

The Chicago Tribune:

The preliminary injunction granted by Leinenweber applies to districts nationwide.

The U.S. Department of Justice wants to require sanctuary cities like Chicago to give notice when immigrants in the country illegally are about to be released from custody and allow immigration agents access to local jails. The new standards would also require local authorities to give 48 hours notice where practicable before releasing from custody people who federal immigration agents suspect of being in the country illegally.

An Open House Seat In Hawaii-- Beware The Fake Progressive DownWithTyranny!

Lobbyist Doug Chin

Whether she wins or loses, the biggest wave from Colleen Hanabusa's decision to primary Governor David Ige is that her plum Honolulu-based House seat (PVI is D+17-- won last year by Clinton 63.1% to 30.5%) came up for grabs. Last year Bernie swept the Democratic caucuses in Hawaii, beating Hillary 23,530 to 10,125 (and out-polling Trump's limp 5,677). It would make sense for the Democrats to run a progressive and not some corporate shill. But... well, you know the Democratic Party.

They have an anti-Trump candidate and they hope they can confuse voters into thinking anti-Trump= progressive. It doesn't. The establishment pick, Attorney General Douglas Chin challenged the Trump travel ban-- a good thing to do-- and got tons of press for it, but Chin was appointed to the job by the governor and he's never run for office before. A not very sterling former lobbyist, if he runs, you can count on lots of heretofore hidden baggage emerging. He was a lobbyist for Wasserman Schultz's favorite private prison racket, Corrections Corporation of America and he worked under Honolulu's throw-away-the-key Republican Mayor Peter Carlisle for years as deputy prosecutor, where he opposed criminal justice reform and added to Hawaii's overcrowded prisons, eventually authorizing a deal to send Hawaii prisoners to a Corrections Corporation of America prison in Arizona. Cozy! As a corporate lawyer for Carlsmith Ball, Chin worked for Wall Street banksters against the legitimate interests of Hawaii's working families, reason enough to oppose his attempt to get into Congress.

Well That Settles It! Insurance and Drug Lobbyists Say Medicare for All Cannot Work The Intercept

The for-profit health care industry and its political surrogates were quick to criticize the sweeping universal Medicare legislation unveiled this week by Sen. Bernie Sanders and more than a dozen Senate Democrats.

Whether its called single-payer or Medicare for All, government-controlled health care cannot work, David Merritt, vice president of Americas Health Insurance Plans, a lobbying group for health insurance companies, said in a statement to reporters.

The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers, another insurance lobby group, released a statement declaring that it adamantly opposes the creation of a single-payer regime, and our guard is up on these efforts. The release cited the rising popularity of single-payer proposals in California, New York, and Colorado, and now Sanderss effort in Congress.

These are worrisome developments, and the increased volume on single-payer is setting off alarms on what Democratic priorities could represent following seven years of failed ACA repeal efforts, the CIAB statement noted.

The Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC funded by a number of health care interests including health insurance giant Anthem, pharmaceutical firm Amgen, and the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, a lobby group for biotech companies also sprung to attack the proposal.

The group called the bill the latest radical and expensive plan for government-run health care in an announcement on the CLF website.

Former Rep. Bruce Morrison, the Connecticut Democrat who left Congress and is now a lobbyist for the American Hospital Association, dismissed the plan as doing too much to disrupt employer-based coverage.

Half of America gets their health insurance coverage on the job, Morrison said. Single payer would replace coverage for some 150 million people, he noted. If you just leaped to Medicare for All, you would totally disrupt the expectations of all those people. And that would not be a good idea.

A similar argument was made by former Democratic Rep. Earl Pomeroy of North Dakota, who lost his seat and is also now lobbying for a number of health care interests, including health insurance firm Aetna and drugmaker Novo Nordisk.

Pretty consistently, people value the coverage they have. Any proposal that says you have to give up the coverage that you know for coverage that well create under a new government program will be a difficult sell,R...

US Census report shows increasing social inequality WORDVIRUS

Small median income gain offset by debt and living costs

By Eric London
15 September 2017

US Census data from 2016 released on Tuesday shows increasing social inequality amid a small gain in household income that is offset by a massive growth of personal debt and rising living costs.

The data tracks the ongoing redistribution of wealth from the working class to the wealthy as a result of the pro-Wall Street policies of both the Republican and Democratic parties. It substantiates the oligarchic character of the United States.

Social inequality

The Gini index, used to measure social inequality, with higher figures indicating a wider economic divide, rose slightly from 2015 (.479) to 2016 (.481). The 2016 figure, according to rankings in the CIA World Factbook, makes the US slightly more equal than Madagascar and less equal than Mexico.

In terms of aggregate income share, the shift from 2015 to 2016 is as follows:

BREAKING: Imran Awan Downloaded Terabits of Info to Dropbox May Have Sold DNC Emails The Gateway Pundit

IT specialist Imran Awan worked for Debbie Wasserman Schultz for thirteen years since she was first elected to national office in 2004 as a Florida representative.

She only fired him after he was arrested and would have kept paying her IT expert even after he fled to Pakistan.

The Awan brothers IT ring had access to emails and computer data from an estimated 800 lawmakers and staffers.

Three Pakistani brothers who managed the IT affairs for several Democratic government officials were relieved of their duties in February on suspicion that they accessed specific computer networks without permission, also known as hacking.

Imran Awan, who started working for Wasserman Schultz in 2005, received $164,600 in 2016, with close to $20,000 of that coming from Wasserman Schultz.

His brother Jamal, who started working as a staffer in 2014, was paid $157,350.12 in 2016. Abid, who started working in 2005, was paid $160,943 in 2016.

Imrans wife, Hina Alvi, who was employed as a staffer since February 2007, was paid 168,300 in 2016. Rao Abbas was paid $85,049 in 2016.

Abid, Imran, and Jamal Awan were barred from computer networks at the House of Representatives in February.

Most of the House Members fired the Awans subsequently.
Only Debbie Wasserman Schultz kept Imran Awan on the pay roll up to the day he got arrest for Bank Fraud after trying to flee the country.

The rest of the family fled since months to Pakistan along with hundreds of thousands of tax-payer money they mysteriously were able to wire.

Democrats were willing or unwillingly compromised by the Awans and Sensitive Information leaked to foreign Enemies!  (Muslim Brotherhood Yemen Raid with dead soldier for example?) Many of them have Seats on Committees that handle highly sensitive information.

Last week Capitol Police confirmed Wasserman Schultzs laptop was found in phone booth at 3 AM with a note to US attorney attached from Imran Awan.

Administrator of the General Services Administration: Who Is Emily W. Murphy? [News - AllGov]

Donald Trumps nominee to run the General Services Administration (GSA) began her career working for the Republican Party. Fresh out of high school, Emily W. Murphy spent 15 months at the Republican National Committee (RNC) during the 1996 election cycle. Trump may hope he can rely on her partisanship to stymie a GSA Inspector General probe into his companys GSA lease for the building where the Washington Trump Hotel is located. The lease states that no elected official of the government ... shall be admitted to any share or part of this Lease, or to any benefit that may arise therefrom. Nevertheless, GSA ruled in March that Trumps revocable trust exempted him from this provision, a decision two prominent government contracts law professors separately called unbelievable, unpersuasive as a matter of law, and a clear contradiction of the lease terms.

An independent agency, GSA is the federal governments lead acquisition agency, providing everything from office supplies to automobiles to buildings for the U.S. governments workforce of more than one million employees. Since January, Murphy has served as White House liaison to acting GSA chief Tim Horne, but it is not known whether she had any input on the Trump Hotel GSA lease decision. The last permanent GSA chief was Denise Turner Roth, who served from March 2015 to January 2017.

Born circa 1974 in St. Louis, Missouri to James Joseph Murphy, Jr., and Mimi (Webster) Murphy, Emily Webster Murphy has a brother, James J. Murphy III, and a sister, Anne (Murphy) Hill. Her father was CEO of Murphy Company Mechanical Contractors And Engineers, Inc., a family-run construction contractor in St. Louis, while her mother was an attorney.

Emily Webster Murphy graduated her mothers alma mater, Villa Duchesne Oak Hill School, a Catholic school in St. Louis, in December 1991. Going east, she earned a B.A. in History and French at Smith College in 1995. She moved to Washington, DC, to work for the Republican National Committee from October 1995 to January 1997, and served as a Republican staff member of the House Sma...

We changed says Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich, in answering wannabe trap questions from media about how guns played a role in the recent school shooting in eastern Washington.

It all depends on the 15 year old. I can tell you, folks, I carried a gun all my life. I hunted, I shot. My friends and I Its huntin season back home. When I was in high school, every one of those rigs in the high school parking lot had a gun in the gun rack. Why? We went huntin on the way home. None of those guns ever walked into a school. None of those guns ever shot anybody. Whats the difference? Did the gun change? Or did you, as a society, change? Ill give ya odds that it was you as a society, because you started glorifying cultures of violence. You glorified the gang culture, you glorified games that actually give you points for raping and killing people. The gun didnt change, we changed.

Then, some liberal water carrying media hack asks But isnt it illegal for a father to provide the code to a gun safe to a 15 year old? to which Knezovich responds Its up to the father. Theres no law in respect to that.

REPUBLICANS WANT THEIR CHEATING MAN BACK No More Mister Nice Blog

Oh jeez, not this again:

Senate Republicans are trying to build momentum for a last-gasp bill to replace the Affordable Care Act, swearing that they are once again just a few votes short of delivering on their seven-year pledge.
Could this really happen? New York magazine's Margaret Hartmann thinks it's possible:
... something shifted on Thursday. After making a presentation at the GOP caucus lunch, Graham said Majority Leader Mitch McConnell encouraged everybody to jump onboard, adding, I can tell you this if we had a vote right now we would get 47, 48 votes.
If they want to do this, it has to happen by the end of the month, after which they'll need 60 votes, not 50, for repeal. It's a tight squeeze. But they're going for it.

This is about more than Obamacare. In the near term at least, it's also about control of the president. He's cheating on Republicans with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, largely because he can't manage to cut any deals with Republicans and he wants to be with a party that will do the things for him that his party won't do.

How bad is the bill? This bad:

GOP voters still want it to happen:
According to the latest POLITICO-Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health poll, a key finding shows the Trump administration's messaging on health care is clearly resonating with the party's base.

The poll asked 1,016 U.S. adults to review and score 10 top priorities for Congress...

Security Council Threats Fail to Halt Continued North Korea Missile Tests The Indypendent

United Nations, New York The 15-member United Nations Security Council has passed a series of resolutions seeking to sanction North Korea over its intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) program. The latest resolution, unanimously adopted on Monday and sponsored by the United States with the backing of China and Russia, called for the United States and allied naval vessels to stop and interdict ships suspected of carrying war materials, oil, refined gasoline and natural gas to North Korean ports.

Although much of the U.S. media portrayed the resolution as a significant achievement, it was followed by a new missile test from North Korea on Thursday. In response to the new test, North Koreas farthest missile launch to date, the Security Council convened once more on Friday.

Like its predecessors, Mondays Security Council resolution, which called on all member states of the UN to inspect vessels with the consent of the flag state, lacked an enforcement mechanism. No consent, no inspection likely why Russia and China did not veto the resolution to begin with.

Meanwhile, critics of the mounting nuclear panic here in the United States caution that the North Korean firings of ICBMs are a tactical development in the testing of a new weapon, not a strategic mobilization of an arsenal for aggression. It is also worth noting that the United States is in violation of its obligations under the 1968 U.N. Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, since it is carrying out a ten-year, $1-trillion modernization of its own nuclear forces.

Russia has urged a compromise that would see the North Koreans stop testing related to their nuclear program in return for the United States and South Korea suspending joint military exercises. The United States rejected that proposal as insulting.

U.N. Secretary General Antnio Guterres has called for a dialogue between all the countries that are a party to the conflict including North and South Korea, Japan, China, Russia and the United States. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has also called for negotiations involving multiple countries as was done to defuse the Iranian nuclear crisis. In the meantime, the Security...

22 Hurt in London Subway Blast
Last Updated: September 15, 2017 12:02 PM, VOA News
A makeshift explosive device detonated early Friday on a packed rush-hour commuter train in London, injuring at least 22 people in what police say was a terrorist attack. Emergency workers said none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

Police descended on the Parsons Green underground subway station after commuters reported an explosion and a fire, causing panic and disrupting service.

The blast was the fifth major terrorist attack in Britain this year.

British Prime Minister Theresa May called the West London attack cowardly and urged London residents to go about their normal routines, although she said, The threat level remains at severe.

May admonished U.S. President Donald Trump for his criticism of Britains approach to terrorism. Trump tweeted, Another attack in London by a loser terrorist. These are sick and demented people who were in the sights of Scotland Yard. Must be proactive!, Trump wrote without elaborating.

May responded to the tweet, telling the BBC, I never think its helpful for anybody to speculate on what is an ongoing investigation.

President Donald Trump described the attack as a very, very terrible thing Friday and told reporters he would be soon speaking to May about the incident.

Of the five terrorists who attacked Britain this year, at least three were known to law enforcement authorities.

London police said their investigation into Fridays attack is being supported by input from MI-5, Britains domestic intelligence agency.

British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson appealed for calm and said it was important not to speculate. London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the British capital will never be intimidated or defeated by terrorism.

The Truth About The Trumpanzee Tax Plans DownWithTyranny!

Former CNN Chief Business Correspondent Ali Velshi, now an MSNBC anchor, is not an idiot... but... On his morning show yesterday the Hairless Prophet of Doom introduced a question to Jared Bernstein, once a professor at Columbia and then Vice President Biden's Chief Economic Adviser, by claiming that Trump's plan to eliminate the estate tax would help the middle class. Before Bernstein got to whatever Velshi's question was, he addressed the GOP talking point Velshi had just slipped onto the air so matter-of-factly. The estate tax only impacts .02% of the richest Americans. ZERO is paid, he said, by any estate worth under $11 million. Velshi pushed back with another Republican Party myth: "but the family farms..." Bernstein cited the NY Times exhaustive search for a family farm, GOP congressmen are always whining about, that has been impacted by the estate tax. That found exactly none-- not one.

Trump's largely nonexistent tax proposal is entirely based on a tissue of outright lies. At a meeting with lawmakers from both parties in the Cabinet Room this week, Seor Trumpanzee insisted that the so-called Tax reform plan his Regime is still trying to draft "will not lower the amount of taxes paid by the wealthiest Americans." Fox News pushed his lies:

Watchdog Finds Atticas Mental Health Treatment Unit Is Haven For Abuse And Neglect Shadowproof

A new report from Disability Rights New York, the federal watchdog for people with disabilities in the state, found rampant abuse and neglect within the mental health treatment unit at the Attica Correctional Facility.

Under state law, people with diagnosed serious mental illness, who face punitive solitary confinement in excess of 30 days, are to be diverted from a Special Housing Unit (SHU) to a Residential Mental Health Unit (RMHU). Unlike the SHU, the RMHU is supposed to be a therapeutic, non-disciplinary unit operated by both corrections and mental health staff.

People incarcerated in the RMHU remain in their cells for at least 19 hours a day. They are to be let out for four hours each weekday to participate in programming and get one hour for recreation, according to the report [PDF].

The law requires RMHU patients receive therapy and programming in settings that are appropriate to their clinical needs while ensuring the safety and security of the unit. Their mental health needs are to be considered before restricting their time out of cell, reviewing their disciplinary segregation sanctions, or taking other actions against them.

While in theory the RMHU is supposed to be a therapeutic alternative to punitive solitary confinement, in reality there are many similarities between the two.

Cell Shields

Take, for example, the use of cell shields in Atticas RMHU. DRNY describes the shields as a restrictive device that can be affixed to an inmates cell door. It is made of Plexiglas with small air holes at the bottom.

Air can typically flow through the metal mesh gate that covers RMHU cells. However, when a cell shield is installed, the air grows hot and stale, visibility is limited, and it becomes harder to communicate with people outside the cell, including mental health staff. The persons isolation is intensified, and especially for those prescribed psychotropic medications that cause heat sensitivity, the stress can be dangerous.

Harvard Kennedy Succumbs To CIA Pressure, Revokes Chelsea Mannings Fellowship Shadowproof

The Institute of Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School revoked an invitation for United States military whistleblower Chelsea Manning to serve as a visiting fellow after intense pressure from the CIA.

According to the Harvard Crimson, the school newspaper, high-ranking current and former CIA officials convinced the Dean of the Kennedy School of Government to reverse course.

Mike Pompeo, the current CIA director, canceled his appearance at the school on September 14. He wrote a letter to the director of the Intelligence and Defense Projects at Harvard Kennedy that declared, Ms. Manning betrayed her country and was found guilty of 17 serious crimes for leaking classified information to Wikileaks. Indeed, Ms. Manning stands against everything the brave men and women I serve alongside stand for.

Former CIA director Mike Morell resigned from his position as a senior fellow at the Belfer Center at the Harvard Kennedy School. His statement bore a distinct similarity to Pompeos statement.

Please know that I am fully aware that Belfer and the IOP are separate institutions within the Kennedy School and that, most likely, Belfer had nothing to do with the invitation of Ms. Manning to be a fellow at IOP, Morell stated. But, as an institution, the Kennedy Schools decision will assist Ms. Manning in her long-standing effort to legitimize the criminal path that she took to prominence, an attempt that may encourage others to leak classified information as well.

Morell acknowledged Mannings rights as a transgender American and contended he had nothing against her discussing the circumstances around her crimes as well as the IOPs right to invite whomever they believe will further the education of Harvards student body. However, Morell still found it necessary to impose his status as a former CIA director to pressure the Kennedy School to change its decision.

To the statement from Pompeo that, Ms. Manning stands against everything the brave men and women I serve alongside stand for, there is some truth to that. She probably stands against the torture of prisoners in order to obtain intelligence or false confessions that can justify the global war on terrorism. She probably stands against deploying covert agents to countries to undermine their sovereignty and impose the agenda of the United States on governments. She probably does not support the cult of intelligences regular engagement in secrecy and deception to avoid responsibility for crimes.

It is remarkable that any former CIA director would oppose someone for long-standing efforts to legitimize their criminal path. This is exactly what former CIA director Michael Hayden, former acting CIA general counsel John Rizzo, former CIA Counterterrorism Center head Jose Rodriguez and othe...

Laura Loomer live streamed her wait in line on Periscope as she zig-zagged through the line to confront Hillary. So the American people would like to know, what happened to your 33,000 emails? What happened in Benghazi?

Hillary quickly retorted with a fake smile on her face, Go read the book.

Loomer then confronted Hillary Clinton about the Haitians who never received their earthquake relief from the Clinton Foundation funds. What happened to the millions of dollars that was supposed to go to the people in Haiti?

This went on for a couple minutes until Laura Loomer was removed from the stage.

On Thursday Laura Loomer joined Elizabeth MacDonald on FOX Business Network to discuss her confrontation.

Saudi Arabia Cracks Down on Dissenting Clerics Amid Rumors of Crown Princes Rise to Throne The Intercept

Saudi Arabia arrested a trio of prominent clerics last weekend, a sign that the kingdom may be preparing for the formal ascendance of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, known as MBS, who is a key decision-maker on the countrys domestic and international affairs but is technically subservient to his father, King Salman.

Salman al-Odah, Awad al-Qarni, and Ali al-Omary were arrested with little explanation over the weekend, but activists suspect that their failure to follow MBSs hawkish line on Qatar played a role in their imprisonment.

Human rights activists told the Wall Street Journal that Odahs arrest came after he declined to come out in support of the Saudi governments actions against Qatar.

On September 8, Odah tweeted a fairly banal message hoping for reconciliation between the kingdom and Qatar. May God harmonize between their hearts for the good of their people, he wrote:

Odah, who has 14 million followers, has not tweeted since September 9, the day he was swept up with the others.

The Qatar crisis, a tribal dispute with potential global implications, is a key reason. This kerfuffle is now very serious. MBS is showing that he can clean house in terms of those who may express sympathy to any opening of dialogue thru the new Saudi State Security Presidium, Ted Karasik, a senior adviser at Gulf State Analytics who has spent years in the region, told The Intercept in an email. Importantly, the cleavage between Qatar and the ATQ is now directly impacting Saudi society the arrests were across a broad swath of clerics, poets and television personalities, Karasik added, referring to the Anti-Terror Quartet, a name used to refer to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt, the four countries that initiated the months-long blockade of Qatar. Thus, some may say these arrests are a purge.

For the clerics, MBS needed to make a sharp demonstration that social reforms are coming quickly and that the clerical establishment needs to support Saudi Vision 2030 no matter the cost to their belief system, he continued. [Odah] and Qarni in particular were on the governments payroll up until their arrests to keep quiet on key issues. That line has now been crossed.

Saudi officials have not commented on the arrests, but the state-run Saudi Press Agency...

DOW Sets Another New All Time Record High This Morning Up Over 21% Since the November Election! The Gateway Pundit

Guest post by Joe Hoft

** DOW Reaches Another All-Time High This Morning

** Market Up 21% Since Election

** 1 in 4 Days a New Record High

This morning the DOW registered another new all time high.  Yesterday the DOW set another all time high at the closing bell!  The two days before that the DOW reached all time highs!

The Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded its 38th all time high of 2017 yesterday closing at 22,203. There have been a total of 165 days where the markets have closed since President Trumps inauguration on January 20th. The DOW has closed at all time highs 38 of those days for nearly 25% or one-fourth of the days the market has been open. The market is up 12% since the inauguration.

Since the election on November 8th the DOW has closed at record highs an amazing 55 times! More than one-fourth or 26% of the 213 days the markets have closed have been record highs since the November 8th election. The market is up 21% since the election!

If the market continues as it started today, it will end in another all time closing high!

Americans are benefitting greatly in their 401ks from the recent change in Administrations.

When compared to President Obama, the current President is smashing it.

In Obamas entire first term, the US stock market (DOW) never reached a new closing high. In years 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 the DOW never reached a new high once!

Its clear on many levels and in nearly every possible economic measurement that America prefers President Trump over the prior President Obama.

IF THE NEW TRUMP DOESN'T LOSE ANY OF HIS BASE, KID ROCK MIGHT BE A SENATE SHOO-IN No More Mister Nice Blog

Yesterday I speculated that there might be anti-DACA protests during President Trump's upcoming tax-overhaul publicity tour. I still think that's possible -- but it's probably unlikely. I suspect Joe Scarborough is correct:

[Sean] Hannity, [Steve] Bannon and [Steve] King are about to learn the same lesson that Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Hillary Clinton, Jeff Zucker, Mika Brzezinski and I discovered in 2016: With Trump, it is never over. His base will stick with him no matter what no matter how loudly and how often the other self-styled leaders of that base take to Twitter or talk radio or any other platform to bleat that Trump has betrayed them....

If Trumps political career is ever brought to an abrupt end, it wont be because a few right-wing carnival barkers found themselves unable to pressure the president into adopting a policy position....

... that Trump base is not going anywhere now.... Trumps base is Trumps base, period....
As Thomas Edsall noted yesterday, Republicans are particularly likely to stick with a politician they like after a deviation from partisan orthodoxy:
Many Republican voters, including self-identified strong conservatives, are ready and willing to shift to the left if theyre told that thats the direction Trump is moving.

Michael Barber and Jeremy C. Pope, political scientists at Brigham Young University, reported in their recent paper Does Party Trump Ideology? Disentangling Party and Ideology in America, that many Republican voters are:
malleable to the point of innocence, and self-reported expressions of ideological fealty are quickly abandoned for policies that once endorsed by a well-known party leader run contrary to that expressed ideology.
Those most willing to adjust their positions on ten issues ranging from abortion to guns to taxes are firm Republicans, Trump loyalists, self-identified conservatives and low information Republicans.

The Barber-Pope study suggests that for many Republicans partisan identification is more a tribal affiliation than an ideological commitment.
(Which might also explain why Ronald Reagan cultists -- i.e., all Republicans -- forgive the Gipper for legalizing undocumented immigrants, raising taxes, running up huge deficits, and selling arms to Iranian ayatollahs.)

To win this kind of GOP voter loyalty, I think y...

Hustling for Love in New York City Matt Forney

This is a guest post by Kid Strangelove. Kid originally published this article at his own blog, but he deleted the site a while ago so he could focus on other projects. He asked me if Id be willing to re-post some of his articles on my blog and I said yes.

On Monday, July 9th, at 6:15 pm on Park Avenue, I decided to take a walk. I had about an hour and a half to kill, about thirty blocks to cover before I got home. It was relaxation time. It was people-watching time.

I saw people of all ages pile out of the buildings, most men looking ordinary with their business slacks and uncomfortably fitted blue shirts. Men and women looking like they traded their gym and relaxation time for the work hard/play hard mantra. Remember the fat kid in the movies in the 1960s through the early 1980s? The kid who would be considered average nowadays? The streets were filled with grown-up versions of that kid, male and female. Beer and ice cream are much more instantly gratifying than weights and treadmills after a twelve hour workday. I should know, because Id made that choice a few times before.

This is what success is considered nowadays: working yourself to death in a conformist environment while your health slowly deteriorates, distracting yourself with alcohol and telling yourself that you made the right choice. Youre a success: you know you are. And all those guys that dont look like you: slackers. Hippies. Ill show them once Im finally part of the one percent!

But I digress. This blog is, after all, supposed to be about my romantic endeavors spanning the city. But on Monday, July 9th, at 6:15 pm on Park Avenue, there were no romantic endeavors and no possibilities of them starting. Everyone was tired, everyone looked bad, and there were no inspiring, sexy sparks anywhere in that crowd.

And it got me thinking: how can anyone actually get laid in an environment like that? After all, you have to convince yourself that this, this is the top of the world, that your financial ambition should provide you with an easy life and the fruits of success should be all around you. But this is not the case. No matter where you are in life, you have to hustle.

Its just that the financial hustle in New York City is so greatand the perceived romantic opportunities are so manythat people feel that they no longer have to hustle for their personal life. They feel that if they are the perfect Mr. or Ms. Worker Bee that everything else will drop into place for them and soon. And they are sadly mistaken.

There was a thread on my favorite macking forum calling NYC a cock festival. And I cant help but agree, because if you are not hustling romantically in NYC, then every single one of your days is like Monday, July 9th, at 6:15 pm...

Trump Adviser Spent a Decade Using Street Gang MS-13 to Justify Anti-Immigrant Agenda. Now Its Happening The Intercept

In President Donald Trumps push to restrict immigration to the United States, MS-13 has become the perfect villain. Trump has focused obsessively on the violent street gang tied to immigrants from El Salvador, appearing at events across the country to highlight brutal murders committed by the group, focusing on two teenagers who gang members allegedly hacked to death with machetes.

Theres a political angle to the singular focus on MS-13. The Trump administration has made its strident demands to wipe out the gang in explicit conjunction with sweeping calls to unravel so-called sanctuary city protections, to promote laws to ramp up deportation proceedings and expand the detention of immigrants, to broaden immigrant gang-tracking databases and special gang task forces, to deputize local law enforcement for immigration enforcement, and in recent days, even to justify the repeal of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

In short, Trump is harnessing the horrors of MS-13 in an attempt to enact much of his immigration agenda.

There is nothing new about Trumps demonization of immigrants, but his focus on MS-13 does not appear to have a long legacy. The Intercept searched in vain through his speeches and statements during the campaign for a single reference to MS-13 and came up blank. He seems to have discovered the decades-old gang in April, and since then has tweeted about them nine times.

The strategy may be new to the halls of power in Washington, but the idea of using violent gangs to demonize immigrants has long existed on the far-right. In fact, a blogger and legal analyst who now has a perch of power within the administration has for years promoted a detailed plan to elevate the dangers of MS-13 in order to radically expand immigration enforcement.

Jon Feere was in January appointed as a special adviser to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, following...

Echoes of Bushs WMD Fraud LewRockwell

The New York Times and other Western media have learned few lessons from the Iraq War, including how the combination of a demonized foreign leader and well-funded activists committed to flooding the process with fake data can lead to dangerously false conclusions that perpetuate war.

What we have seen in Syria over the past six years parallels what occurred in Iraq in the run-up to the U.S.-led invasion in 2002-03. In both cases, there was evidence that the system was being gamed by the Iraqi National Congress (INC) in pushing for the Iraq War and by pro-rebel activists promoting regime change in Syria but those warnings were ignored. Instead, the flood of propagandistic claims overwhelmed what little skepticism there was in the West.

Regarding Iraq, the INC generated a surge of defectors who claimed to know where Saddam Hussein was concealing his WMD stockpiles and where his nuclear program was hidden. In Syria, we have seen something similar with dubious claims about chemical weapons attacks.

Buy Gold at Discounted Prices

The Iraqi defectors, of course, were lying, and a little-noticed congressional study revealed that the CIA had correctly debunked some of the fakers but because of the pro-invasion political pressure from George W. Bushs White House and the U.S. mainstream medias contempt for Saddam Hussein other bogus claims were accepted as true. The result was catastrophic.

But the telltale signs of an INC disinformation campaign were there before the war. For instance, by early February 2003, as the final invasion plans were underway, the parade of Iraqi walk-ins was continuing. U.S. intelligence agencies had progressed up to Source Eighteen, one fellow who came to epitomize what some CIA analysts suspected was systematic INC coaching of sources.

As the CIA planned a debriefing of Source Eighteen, another Iraqi exile passed on word to the agency that an INC representative had told Source Eighteen to deliver the act of a lifetime. CIA analysts werent sure what to make of that piece of news since Iraqi exiles frequently badmouthed each other but the value of the warning soon became clear.

U.S. intelligence officers debriefed Source Eighteen the next day and discovered that Source Eighteen was supposed to have a nuclear engineering background, but was unable to discuss advanced mathematics or physics and described types of nuclear reactors that do not exist, according to a Senate Intelligence Committee report on the Iraq Wars intelligence failures.

Source Eighteen used the bathroom frequently, particularly when he appeared to be flustered by a line of questioning, suddenly remembering a new piece of information upon his return. D...

The Surrealism of War LewRockwell

I was beginning work on my final post regarding Sean McMeekins book The Russian Origins of the First World War, when in my further research, I came across the notes of Maurice Palologue, the French ambassador to Russia during the war.  The specific section is regarding an inter-Allied conference, held in Petrograd amongst the Allies: Britain, France, Italy and Russia.

What is of primary interest to me at this moment is the date of the conference: it began on January 29, 1917.  If I must put this date in context, the Russian February Revolution was only weeks away.

Reading these notes, I am struck by the dialogue and I will focus here on the portions of the dialogue pertaining specifically to the internal situation in Petrograd:

Time to buy old US gold coins

[After having just arrived, Gaston Doumergue] asked me about the internal situation in Russia. I painted it without sparing the darker colours, and drew the inference that it was necessary to hasten military events.

On the Russian front, I said, time is not working for us now. The public does not care about the war. All the government departments and the machinery of administration are getting hopelessly and progressively out of gear. The best minds are convinced that Russia is walking straight into the abyss. We must make haste.

I didnt think the mischief had got so far.

Youll be able to see for yourself.

Imperial Household Minister, Count Vladimir Frederiks, was responsible for the administration of the Imperial familys personal affairs and living arrangements.  He offered:

The conference must agree together that after the war the Allies shall come to each others aid in case of internal disorders. We are all interested in fighting revolution!

To which Palologue wrote in his notes:

He is back in the days of the Holy Alliance; only a century behind the times O sancta et senilis simplicitas!

At a small private lunch:

The conversation, which was quite unrestricted and very animated, was mainly on the subject of internal politics.

At one moment, Doumergue thought that my guests were a little too impulsive, a shade too eager to take the field against tsarism, and was advocating patience.

At the very mention of the word patience, Miliukov and M...

William James on Religious Certainty bensozia

Part of William James' project in The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902) was to evaluate whether having personal religious feelings and experience makes human life on average better or worse. Another part was to assess whether our experiences of the divine presence, or those more fully developed experiences of mystics, have any value as evidence about the truth of religion. As he explains at length in this passage from Lecture 14, he is trying to assess these things using a method that might be called common sense. Note that he is using "secular" in the old sense of "pertaining to a particular age of history."

Abstractly, it would seem illogical to try to measure the worth of a religion's fruits in merely human terms of value. How can you measure their worth without considering whether the God really exists who is supposed to inspire them ? If he really exists, then all the conduct instituted by men to meet his wants must necessarily be a reasonable fruit of his religion it would be unreasonable only in case he did not exist. If, for instance, you were to condemn a religion of human or animal sacrifices by virtue of your subjective sentiments, and if all the while a deity were really there demanding such sacrifices, you would be making a theoretical mistake by tacitly assuming that the deity must be non-existent; you would be setting up a theology of your own as much as if you were a scholastic philosopher.

To this extent, to the extent of disbelieving peremptorily in certain types of deity, I frankly confess that we must be theologians. If disbeliefs can be said to constitute a theology, then the prejudices, instincts, and common sense which I chose as our guides make theological partisans of us whenever they make certain beliefs abhorrent.

But such common-sense prejudices and instincts are themselves the fruit of an empirical evolution. Nothing is more striking than the secular alteration that goes on in the moral and religious tone of men, as their insight into nature and their social arrangements progressively develop. After an interval of a few generations the mental climate proves unfavorable to notions of the deity which at an earlier date were perfectly satisfactory: the older gods have fallen below the common secular level, and can no longer be believed in. Today a deity who should require bleeding sacrifices to placate him would be too sanguinary to be taken seriously. Even if powerful historical credentials were put forward in his favor, we would not look at them. Once, on the contrary, his cruel appetites were themselves credentials. They positively recommended him to men's imaginations in ages when such coarse signs of power were respected and no others could be understood. Such deities then were worshiped because such fruits were relished.

Doubtless historic accidents always played some later part, but the original factor i...

The CIA and Its Ally Al-Qaeda LewRockwell

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden created so much transparency when he leaked information about the NSAs mass surveillance programs. He wasnt the first to do so, but thanks to his and many others efforts, whistleblowers are now a major gateway to the truth behind the military industrial complex. It makes you wonder, what else does a man like this know? Surely there are more facts he is aware of, but hasnt revealed. This, however, has not stopped him from retweeting some interesting things over the past few years. One of the latest relates to the CIAs connection with terrorist organization Al-Qaeda.

The tweet concerns Even McMullin, a former operations officer for the CIA who also ran during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Hes served as a senior adviser on national security issues for the House Committee on Foreign Affairs as well as a Chief Policy Director for the House Republican Conference in the U.S. House of Representatives. He has also worked as an investment banker.

Below is a the retweet from Snowden, where Dr. Max Abrahms, an assistant professor of political science and public policy at Northeastern University who specializes in international security, especially terrorism, posits the connection between the CIA and al-Qaeda.

McMullin responds by ridiculing the assertion, which should raise immediate red flags. You would think he would offer a respectful, intelligent response, but many within the intelligence community and the 1 percent desire to make people feel stupid for even raising an issue like this in the first place. Its reminiscent of other controversial issues today, like vaccines. When proper dialogue ceases, and one side uses ridicule to share their beliefs, its most likely that they have something to hide, and the tweet below this one perfectly illustrates that.

Snowden retweeted this on September 12th, a day after the 9/11 anniversary

The above tweet was posted on September 9, 2017, but take a look at this tweet from McMullin below, which completely contradicts it. Snowden retweeted these two side by side.

Quite odd, isnt it? Snowden has not come out publicly to say that the CIA or NSA are linked to terrorist organizations, but he doesnt have to. The facts speak for themselves. Even without this tweet from Snowden, multiple links between...

Whole Foods Free-Range Chicken Supplier Said To Actually Run Factory Farm The Intercept

When Amazon purchased Whole Foods last month, it didnt just get the retail locations. It picked up Whole Foodss baggage as well. Among the bigger issues inherited by Amazon appears to be a four-month investigation from the animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere that challenges Whole Foodss core selling point of healthy and humane food.

The group accused Pitman Family Farms, the maker of Marys Free Range Chicken and a supplier to Whole Foods in six Western states, of breaking its promises of free-range environments for its birds.

Direct Action Everywhere, whose mission is to create animal welfare-friendly cities and outlaw factory farming practices, visited a dozen Pitman farms and never once saw a chicken roaming outside. The group reported that it found no indications of outdoor living, such as feathers or fecal matter. Twenty-four hour surveillance cameras attached to six separate locations revealed no outdoor birds either, the activists said. Instead, chickens were packed shoulder-to-shoulder inside dusty sheds with degraded air quality, forced to challenge one another for access to food and water.

Video of Direct Action Everywheres findings showed scattered fighting among the chickens and smaller birds with injuries, including one with its eye pecked out. They also alleged evidence of debeaking, a procedure involving severing the tip of a chickens beak with a laser to prevent pecking.

Video: Direct Action Everywhere

We saw things that even shocked us, Wayne Hsiung, co-founder of the group, told The Intercept in an interview. Hsiung characterized the overcrowding as the worst hes ever seen at a poultry farm, with investigators were nearly unable to walk through the flocks without stepping on birds.

The investigation took place from January to May at roughly a dozen Pitman farm locations in Californias San Joaquin Valley. Hsiung alleged no meaningful difference between the farms and reported no evidence of free-range activity. We couldnt find a single bird outside, he said.

Midnight Meme Of The Day DownWithTyranny!

-by Noah

What! You haven't had enough of the Republican Party's "Trickle Down Economics?" Well, as Repug icon Ronald Reagan would say, "there you go again." Now that Paul Ryan and his House of Lunatics are back in session, they are planning on what they cynically refer to as "tax reform." Why? Because pirates like Trump and Ryan stand to personally gain, both in income and campaign contributions (bribes). The better deal that Ryan, the psychotic Ted Bundy of politicians, can get on changing our tax code to benefit his benefactors, the more he stands to get from his masters at Koch Industries.

It was a senile Reagan who gave us the "trickle down" and his now Trump-led party wants more of the same, and, you know Trump gets excited when he hears those words because pissing on the bottom 99% is what "Trickle Down Economics" is all about. Ryan talks about liberal takers but the biggest takers in our country are not the blue states. The biggest takers of federal tax monies are the red states, and that's where you'll find some of the worst poverty you could ever imagine this country having. I remember an interview with Magic Johnson that shows up on TV sports channels from time to time. In it, he talks about how he thought no one grew up poorer than he and his neighbors in LA's South Central, until he went to visit with his good friend Larry Bird who showed him a tour of rural Indiana. My, my, where does the money go?

The saddest thing about it is that the people who were most hurt by Reagan's crackpot or voodoo economics and tax "theories" are the ones who voted for con artists like Trump and Ryan. Those voters are so masochistic that they will just keep on doing it until they starve to death for lack of money to even buy food or bullets to hunt it.

And I would stand there like the last guy to get picked in peewee football, wondering if they were gonna use me at all, and the high sheriff would finally look at me and say, And Briggs, you do color.

Color was this word for feature writing that meant Find something to write about, preferably something with a lunatic or a bereaved person in it.

Stumbled Upon LewRockwell

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS (aka Lou Gehrigs Disease after this famous baseball player died of the disease in 1941) is a disease without a known cause or cure.  It progressively disables motor neurons and often a victim dies by choking to death or cant expand their lungs and succumbs by asphyxiation.

Researchers writing in the Annual Review of Biochemistry have been investigating SOD1superoxide dismutase 1 an internally made enzymatic antioxidant and ALS.  When the human body is biologically stressed SOD-1 is produced from copper-zinc precursors.  Somehow in the development of ALS zinc-copper SOD1 becomes toxic, destroying motor neurons (nerves used for movement).

In a more recent report published in Neurobiology of Disease we learn that the provision of copper lengthens the lifespan of ALS mice by 25%.

Time to buy old US gold coins

Then, apparently on the cusp of a cure, researcher Stephen Byer indicates a zinc/copper drug is being tested and winks his eye to say, if you read between the lines, that maybe ALS patients ought to be taking copper and zinc supplements.

There is no way to get enough zinc from the diet.  Dr. Byer goes on to spell out what to do: Copper and zinc pose little to no risk and have few side effects and can be purchased at most health food stores as well as online. The recommended dosage is 90-100 mg of zinc and 2-3 mg of copper, taken twice daily. In other words, dont wait for the copper/zinc drug.

With all of the above information as background information, in my investigations of natural remedies for helpless diseases, I stumble across the following case report published in BMJ (British Medical Journal Case Reports.

The report describes a 62-year old male with a history of six months of progressive lower limb instability, burning or prickling sensations in arms, legs, feet (parethesia), pain and weakness.  A motor neuron problem was confirmed.  Blood tests reveal a lower copper/higher zinc ratio.

The abnormal blood mineral levels were traced to use of a zinc-based dental fixative paste used for his false teeth.  The dental fixative was withdrawn and supplemental copper provided.  The progressive course of the disease was halted though the patient remains in a wheelchair.

If this is a cure of sorts, then one wonders why it has taken so long to find it?  The report published in BMJ Case Reports goes unnoti...

Victors Partition the Ottoman Empire LewRockwell

We are all familiar with the story of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, the agreement between Britain and France for carving up and dividing large portions of the Ottoman Empire after the war.  There is one Entente power not formally included in this common narrative, despite being involved in some of the heaviest and most successful military campaigns in Anatolia, Persia, and Mesopotamia.

Lets rectify this

The Russian Origins of the First World War, by Sean McMeekin

On 4 March 1915, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Sazonov delivered to his ambassadors in Paris and London a message that came directly from Tsar Nicholas II: a formal sovereign demand for postwar control of Constantinople and the Straits.  That the Russians had their eyes on this prize was no surprise this had long been an objective for the Russians.  Despite this

Sazonovs historic aide-mmoire does, however, seem to have offended French and British sensibilities in its deeply inappropriate timing.

Time to buy old US gold coins

It was delivered right in the middle of the bloody Dardanelles campaign, a campaign for which Russia was contributing, as of yet, nothing.  Despite this lack of contribution, the British Cabinet formally endorsed Russias claim on 12 March.

The author, McMeekin, is surprised by this approval it is one of many examples he offers through which he concludes that the British diplomats were dupes and the Russians were brilliant.  As I have mentioned, this seems unlikely to me and even in this case there is a reasonable alternative interpretation.

As Peter Frankopan offered, Britain wanted Russia focused on Europe so it would not focus on Britains Asia.  Had Britain turned down the Tsars demands, there was concern that Germanophiles in Russia would convince the Tsar that Britain never intended to support Russias claims in Asia Minor.

In the meantime, what was Britains formal endorsement actually worth?  Had Britain been successful in the Dardanelles campaign (aka Gallipoli), she would have controlled the Straits.  Postwar, what would any promises be worth, once there would have been one hundred moving pieces on the map to be sorted out with possession being nine-tenths of the law and all that.

And if Britain failed to secure Constantinople and the Straits well, she would owe Russia exactly nothing.  So, Britains endorsement of the Tsars demands would keep Russia fighting in Germany and leave...

Master of Confused and Confusing Prose LewRockwell

[This article is a selection from Where Keynes Went Wrong]:

Paul Samuelson, professor of economics at MIT after World War II and author of a best-selling economics textbook, was one of Keyness most ardent American disciples. Here is what he has to say about the latters General Theory:

It is a badly written book, poorly organized. . . . It is arrogant, bad-tempered, polemical, and not overly generous in its acknowledgements. It abounds in mares nests and confusion.

In reading this, one recalls Keyness infatuation with paradox. Samuelson, the ardent disciple, is telling us that the masters book is good because it is bad.

We do not, however, have to take Samuelsons word about the bad writing, poor organization, and general confusion of The General Theory. Following publication in 1936, many leading economists pointed to the same problems, although some of them hesitated to criticize or quarrel with Keynes and thus chose their words carefully. Frank H. Knight, a leading American economist, complained that it was inordinately difficult to tell what the author means. . . . The direct contention of the work [also] seems to me quite unsubstantiated.

Time to buy old US gold coins

Joseph Schumpeter noted Keyness technique of skirting problems by artificial definitions which, tied up with highly specialized assumptions, produce paradoxical-looking tautologies. . . . British economist Hubert Henderson privately stated that: I have allowed myself to be inhibited for many years . . . by a desire not to quarrel in public with Maynard . . . . But. . . I regard Maynards books as a farrago of confused sophistication.

French economist Etienne Mantoux added that the whole thing simply appeared to be rationalization of a policy long known to be . . . dear to him.

In The General Theory itself, Keynes has a good word to say about clarity, consistency, and logic. He is quick to pounce on what he considers the errors of others. But he then leads us down a rabbit hole of convolution, needless and misleading jargon, mis-statement, confusion, contradiction, unfactuality, and general illogic.

It is not that Keynes is entirely opaque. It is quite feasible to make out what he seems to be saying, but it is worth taking a moment to focus on the particular rhetorical devices and obfuscations that Keynes employed.

Device One: Obscurity

A typical sentence from The General Theory:

We have full employment when output has risen to a level at whic...

Swindling Futurity LewRockwell

The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale.  Thomas Jefferson

Yesterday the government reported a modest August budget deficit of $108 billion. Thats one month folks. This is another example of how the government and their mainstream media mouthpieces portray horrifically bad, extremely abnormal financial data as normal and expected. They pretend everything that has happened since 2008 is just standard operating procedure. They follow the Big Lie theory to the extreme. The masses have been so dumbed down, desensitized, and taught to believe delusions, they cant distinguish the abnormal from the normal.

Those in power pretend near zero interest rates eight years after the recession was supposedly over is normal. They pretend $500 billion to $1.4 trillion annual deficits are normal. They pretend 20% unemployment is really 4.4%. They pretend the stock market is at all-time highs due to an improving economy rather than central bank easy money and corporate stock buybacks. They pretend $20 trillion of debt and $200 trillion of unfunded welfare promises is no problem. We are living in the grand delusion.

The $108 billion August deficit brought the year to date deficit to $674 billion. With one month left in the fiscal year, the deficit will end at approximately $750 billion. Does that strike you as normal? The propaganda media will spin this dreadful result as positive by saying it is down from $1.4 trillion in 2009. They wont mention it is up 70% from the 2015 deficit and the highest since 2012. No one ever mentions the annual deficit in 2007 was only $161 billion. As a cherry on top of this mass deception, the total budget deficits reported since 2002 totaled $9.4 trillion, while the national debt rose by $13.8 trillion. Just a slight $4.4 trillion accounting discrepancy among friends.

The chart below reveals some fascinating insights into the depths of debt depravity weve descended. With interest rates near record low levels, interest on the debt of $275 billion exceeds the total receipts from corporate income taxes. The Fed will never willingly normalize interest rates because allowing rates to go back to 2007 levels would blow the budget deficit sky high. Even an Ivy League academic can figure that out.

Is Google Your Shrink? LewRockwell

Googles screening tool that enables people to check online whether they are clinically depressed could do more harm than good, one expert has warned.

Last month, the tech giant released a self-assessment quiz, called the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), which pops up as a result for the search query Am I depressed? on a computer or cell phone.

Google developed its test in partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) but one professor claims that the quiz could just lead to over-treatment of depression amid the USs opioid epidemic.

He warns the tools development was funded by major drug company Pfizer, which profits from the sale of antidepressants.

Google and NAMI both stressed that the results of their test are not an actual diagnosis.

The quiz asks questions about how frequently the respondent feels down, what their energy levels, sleeping and eating habits are like, and if they have had recent thoughts of suicide.

It returns a numeric score and is meant to help users determine when to seek help, and to provide some basic information they can take to their health care professionals for reference.

But Simon Gilbody, professor of psychological medicine at the University of York, warned that the test has a high likelihood of returning false positives.

Writing in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), he claimed that many of the answers the test would identify as warning signs were actually transient psychological distress, which will remit without treatment.

He also expressed concern that the test could misidentify other disorders or mental health issues as depression.

Government Saint LewRockwell

When former Attorney General Janet Reno died last November, the media heaped praise on her as if she had been justice incarnate. Reno had long enjoyed sainthood inside the Beltway; the Womens Bar Association of the District of Columbia even created a Janet Reno Torchbearer Award. But Renos record of deceit, brutality, and power grabs should not be forgotten by any American who cares about freedom.

Shortly after Reno became attorney general in 1993, she approved the FBI final assault on the Branch Davidians holed up in a rickety building outside of Waco, Texas. She went on Nightline the evening after 80 people died in a conflagration and announced, I made the decision. Im accountable. The buck stops with me. Reno then asserted that the fiery end was all somebody elses fault: I dont think anybody has ever dealt with a David Koresh, who would purposely set people afire in that number. Nightline host Ted Koppel asked Reno why the feds used tanks to ram the compound down. Reno replied, I think that what we were trying to do was to give everybody an opportunity to come out in the most unobtrusive way possible, not with a frontal assault.

Reno masterminded a cover-up of the federal role at Waco. Americans did not learn until 1999 that the FBI had fired pyrotechnic grenades into the Davidians home, which could have started the fire that left 80 people dead. She also muzzled federal officials who had been involved at Waco. When she traveled to Oklahoma to hype Clintons crime bill in a speech in April 1994, FBI agent Bob Ricks, who had been the agencys daily spokesman during the 51-day siege, told Reno that many people were still agitated by Waco and asked that the gag order be lifted on himself and other officials. Reno replied, I dont think the American people care about Waco anymore.

The Oklahoma City bombing the following April showed otherwise. In a speech a few weeks later, Reno told federal law-enforcement agents, There is much to be angry about when we talk about Waco and the governments conduct is not the reason. David Koresh is the reason. She also revealed that the first and foremost reason for the tank and gas assault was that law-enforcement agents on the ground concluded that the perimeter had become unstable and posed a risk both to them and to the surrounding homes and farms. Individuals sympathetic to Koresh were threatening to take matters into their own hands to end the stalemate, were at various times reportedly on the way. This new first and foremost reason was a convenient ex post facto rationale after the Oklahoma City bombing. There was no evidence that FBI agents faced real threats from an uprising during the Waco siege. Previously, Reno had justified the final assault because she heard children were bein...

The other day, Andrew Torba was scheduled to appear on the Tucker Carlson show so I figured out how to find it off the underground TV system. I no longer have a TV subscription, so I have to rely on the dark web for this stuff. Cord cutters can say what they like about services like Kodi, but it is a hassle compared to regular cable. So much so, in fact, that I rarely watch television. Instead I download movies and TV shows and binge watch when the spirit moves me. I watched Deadwood last month, for example.

Anyway, I found a stream and tuned in to the show. I did not know when Torbas segment was scheduled so I had to sit through the whole thing. Watching Tucker interview some old guy, who looked vaguely familiar, I felt like I had gone back in time. I have not watched these shows in a long time. I get my news on-line. I skip the Blue Team Red Team hooting that makes up political banter in the mainstream press. In fact, I barely notice most of what passes for current events discussion. I just dont care that much.

The Torba piece was short and I got the sense that Tucker Carlson spends little time on-line. The things Torba said about Twitter and FaceBorg zapping bad-think on a daily basis were obviously news to Tucker. He was genuinely surprised when Torba explained the realities of who controls the internet and the power they have over speech. The reason for this is no one in the mass media understands any of this stuff. They live in the media bubble and the sorts of things we experience on-line are alien to them.

Buy Gold at Discounted Prices

This is not a new phenomenon. Back in the olden thymes when people were coming home every night to a dozen CDs in the mail from ISPs offering a free month of internet, the mass media was unaware the internet existed. I recall laughing myself silly one night, watching a couple of airheads on the local news in Boston, talk about the mysterious underworld of the internet as if it was the back room at Ricks Cafe. They carried on like the internet was an opium den. The astonished look on their faces was priceless.

It is another example of the gulf between the people in the mass media and the public. We are at the point now where most everyone under the age of 50 is getting their news and information from on-line sources. The median age for the TV chat shows is mid-60s and the age for traditional print publications like magazines and journals is 70. The people working the chat show circuit are people who came into the business from newspapers and political magazines. Even the young pe...

US Sanctions Against North Korea LewRockwell

The recent Global Times editorial, discussed by me in my article on UN Security Council Resolution 2753, has spoken of US attempts to use sanctions to collapse North Koreas economy and to suffocate the North Korean regime as an idea that is both dangerous and counterproductive

Some Americans and South Koreans have attempted to collapse Pyongyangs economy and suffocate the current Pyongyang regime. This is dangerous. North Koreas nuclear crisis requires arduous efforts to find a final solution, and any attempt to immediately end the crisis will only escalate tensions and eventually jeopardize self-interests.

This is exactly correct.  Indeed one of the most concerning aspects of the swirl of discussion that takes place in the West and the US especially about sanctions on North Korea is that there is never any real explanation of what sanctions on North Korea are supposed to achieve.

Every so often Western leaders speak of sanctions as intended either to force the North Koreans to negotiate though since the US refuses to give North Korea security guarantees it is never made clear what the North Koreans are supposed to agree to negotiate about or to abandon their ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programme entirely.

If these are the objectives behind the sanctions policy, then it has visibly failed.  Since North Korea carried out its first nuclear test on 9th October 2006 there have been eight UN Security Council Resolutions imposing sanctions on North Korea, whilst the US has imposed unilateral sanctions of its own.  Far from deterring the North Koreans from pursuing their ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programme or causing them to abandon it, the North Koreans have instead accelerated it.

That sanctions, however severe they become, will never persuade the North Koreans to give up their ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programme was recently pointed out by President Putin of Russia. Speaking in his usual direct way, President Putin set out the position clearly on 5th September 2017 at a press conference in China following the latest BRICS summit

Sanctions of any kind are useless and ineffective in this case. As I said to one of my colleagues yesterday, they will eat grass, but they will not abandon this programme unless they feel safe.

Whilst few world leaders have the confidence to say this as forcefully as President Putin did, the comments at the UN Security Council...

Imperial Weapons for World Dominion LewRockwell

[This piece has been adapted and expanded from Alfred W. McCoys new book, In the Shadows of the American Century: The Rise and Decline of U.S. Global Power.]

Not quite a century ago, on January 7, 1929, newspaper readers across America were captivated by a brand-new comic strip, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.  It offered the country its first images of space-age death rays, atomic explosions, and interplanetary travel.

I was twenty years old, World War I veteran Anthony Buck Rogers told readers in the very first strip, surveying the lower levels of an abandoned mine near Pittsburgh when suddenly gas knocked me out. But I didnt die. The peculiar gas preserved me in suspended animation. Finally, another shifting of strata admitted fresh air and I revived.

Staggering out of that mine, he finds himself in the 25th century surrounded by flying warriors shooting ray guns at each other. A Mongol spaceship overhead promptly spots him on its television view plate and fires its disintegrator ray at him.  Hes saved from certain death by a flying woman warrior named Wilma who explains to him how this all came to be.

Mongol airships fire disintegrator rays to destroy America.
(Buck Rogers, 2429 A.D., 2-9-1929, Roland N. Anderson Collection)

Many years ago, she says, the Mongol Reds from the Gobi Desert conquered Asia from their great airships held aloft by gravity Repellor Rays. They destroyed Europe, then turned toward peace-loving America. As their disintegrator beams boiled the oceans, annihilated the U.S. Navy, and demolished Washington, D.C. in just three hours, government ceased to exist, and mobs, reduced to savagery, fought their way out of the cities to scatter and hide in the country. It was the death of a nation. While the Mongols rebuilt 15 cities as centers of super scientific magnificence under their evil emperor, Americans led hunted lives in the forests until their undying flame of freedom led them to recapture lost science and once more strike for freedom.

After a year of such cartoons filled with the worst of early-twentieth-century Asian stereotypes, just as Wilma is clinging to the airship of the Mongol Viceroy as it speeds across the Pacific, a mysterious metallic orb appears high in the...

Maybe Youre Not Just Tired LewRockwell

Tiredness can result from several different reasons, the primary one being a lack of sleep. But fatigue and tiredness are often the most documented symptoms that patients report. For that reason, its difficult to properly diagnose a health condition based on the symptom of tiredness alone. Furthermore, lifestyle habits are another large contributing factor to fatigue.

The main difference between fatigue caused by an illness and fatigue caused by lifestyle habits is that fatigue as a result of a health condition does not improve with proper rest. Generally, if fatigue is persistent for over a week, then it can be an indicator of a more serious health problem.

Furthermore, there is a big difference between feeling tired and feeling excessively fatigued. Sleepiness is the desire for sleep whereas excessive fatigue is feeling tired even when you know you got adequate sleep. You may feel completely wiped out, as if you havent slept in days.

If you feel more like the latter, then below, you will find nine common causes of fatigue.

9 health conditions that cause fatigue

1. Allergies
This is a tiredness that occurs seasonally. You will also experience watery, itchy eyes, a runny or stuffed nose, coughing, and headaches. All those symptoms can leave you feeling tired.

2. Illnesses
Getting over an illness can be strenuous on your body and your immune system. So, while your body is still trying to fight it off, you could be left feeling tired. Getting enough rest post-illness will help you recover.

3. Depression
People with depression not only lose hope and feel helpless, but it can also take a physical toll, too. They feel exhausted and lack energy, more so because their sleep becomes largely interrupted as well.

4. Celiac disease
Along with the common symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation, some will experience fatigue. Some patients may even experience fatigue after consuming gluten without the other symptoms.

5. Sleep apnea
Sleep apnea is a sleep condition where a person period...

Cholesterol Isnt the Problem in Heart Disease LewRockwell

By Dr. Mercola

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in nearly every cell of your body and is essential to good health. Your body uses it to make hormones, protect your cell membranes, digest food and manufacture vitamin D after exposure to the sun. Your liver manufactures most of the cholesterol your body requires from nutrients extracted from your food.

Animals use cholesterol in much the same way. This means the meats from beef, pork or chicken have similar levels of cholesterol. Even fat cells in animal meat have the same amount of cholesterol as other cells. All meat averages 25 milligrams of cholesterol per ounce.1 Dietary cholesterol is absorbed at different rates, between 20 and 60 percent, depending upon the individual.2

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans3 addressed past vilification of dietary cholesterol, announcing4 cholesterol is not considered a nutrient of concern for overconsumption. These same guidelines also advise limiting sugar to no more than 10 percent of your diet,5 which is approximately 50 grams of sugar, or 200 calories, in a diet consuming 2,000 calories each day. This level is still far higher than what is healthy as net carbohydrates are a prime factor in the development of inflammation.

Recently published research from a clinical trial sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals demonstrates a reduction in recurring heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular deaths in participants who took a targeted anti-inflammatory medication that did not lower cholesterol levels.6

Who's Crazier, Seor Trumpanzee Or Kim Jong Un? DownWithTyranny!

Reporter Evan Osnos' letter from Pyongyang-- The Risk of Nuclear War With North Korea in the new issue of the New Yorker-- begins with "The Madman Theory." We all know Trump is mentally unstable, to put it mildly, but is Kim Jong Un as crazy? Crazier? Could either of those two misanthropes blunder into a nuclear war? Osnos travelled to North Korea (as well as Seoul and Beijing) last month to get a better understanding of how North Koreans think about the kind of violence that their country so often threatens, if their threats are serious, or mere posturing and how they imagine that a war would unfold? "[T]he prospect of a nuclear confrontation," he wrote, "between the United States and the most hermetic power on the globe had entered a realm of psychological calculation reminiscent of the Cold War, and the two men making the existential strategic decisions were not John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev but a senescent real-estate mogul and reality-television star and a young third-generation dictator who has never met another head of state. Between them, they had less than seven years of experience in political leadership. Brinkmanship, according to Thomas Schelling, the Nobel Prize-winning economist who pioneered the theory of nuclear deterrence, is the art of 'manipulating the shared risk of war.' In 1966, he envisaged a nuclear standoff as a pair of mountain climbers, tied together, fighting at the edge of a cliff. Each will move ever closer to the edge, so that the other begins to fear that he might slip and take both of them down. It is a matter of creating the right amount of fear without losing control. Schelling wrote, 'However rational the adversaries, they may compete to appear the more irrational, impetuous, and stubborn.' But what if the adversaries are irrational, impetuous, and stubborn?"

His guide in North Korea (Mr. Pak) "spends most of his time analyzing American politics and news reports, trying to divine Americas intentions regarding North Korea. Since the election of Donald Trump, he said, the task had become more demanding. 'When he speaks, I have to figure out what he means, and what his next move will be,' he said. 'This is very difficult.' That would...

FLASHBACK=> Trump in 2014: Cantors Defeat Shows Everybody in Congress Vulnerable if They Support Amnesty The Gateway Pundit

President Trump told Breitbart News back in June 2014 that House Majority Leader Eric Cantors historic loss shows that everybody is vulnerable if they support amnesty.

Businessman Trump warned the GOP: To avoid a fate like Cantors, dont support amnesty.
Breitbart.com reported:

Real estate magnate and conservative provocateur Donald Trump told Breitbart News Thursday that House Majority Leader Eric Cantors defeat in a primary by conservative Dave Brat shows the entire political class in Washington is in danger.

Everybody is vulnerable because whats happening in the country is very sad and the world is watching, Trump said, emphasizing again: Everybody is now vulnerable.

Trump said he thinks Cantors amazing can be traced to his stance on immigration policy and because Cantor lost touch with his people that hes representing.

His whole stance on immigration and his softness on immigration caused him to lose one of the most embarrassing elections ever, Trump said.

Overall, Trump warns the rest of the Republican Party, to avoid a fate like Cantors, dont support amnesty or a massive increase in legal immigration.

On Wednesday President Trump said it was likely he would support anmnesty for DREAMERS breaking a campaign promise.

REVOLUTION: Robert E. Lee Statue Removed in Dallas The Gateway Pundit

A statue of Robert E. Lee was removed from a Dallas park Thursday after the Dallas City Council voted 13-1 on Sept. 6 to have it removed, Fox News reports.

According to Fox 4, it took workers approximately 3 hours to remove the statue and place it onto the trailer which would then transfer it to a storage facility until a decision is made on where the statue will lay to rest.

Police officers with automatic rifles surrounded the area as security.

Sons of Confederate Veterans fought the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue by obtaining a temporary restraining order just as the removal began, however; a federal judge lifted the order.

Protesters clashed in August after left-wing activists called for the statues to be taken down because they are a symbol of racism.

The Confederacy is a part of our history. The left is pushing for a revolution in this country by taking down monuments or covering them with tarps just like Islamic terrorists do in the Middle East. Where were all of these angry protesters during 8 years of Obama?

How Soon Before Trump Is Dragged Out Of The White House In A Straight Jacket? DownWithTyranny!

Yesterday, I linked, very much in passing, to a Salon post by Chauncey DeVega because he deals with Trump's mental health-- or at least his lack of mental health. Harvard psychiatrist Lance Dodes is contending that Seor Trumpanzee is a "sociopath" and "a very sick individual." Do you know anyone who would disagree? Clearly Dodes has discarded the "Goldwater Rule."
The evidence suggesting that Donald Trump may have serious mental health problems is overwhelming.

He is a compulsive liar who creates his own fantasy world. Trump is also extremely moody and impulsive. Trumps advisers have to satisfy his extreme narcissism and nurture his detachment from reality by presenting him-- on a twice-daily basis-- with a file folder full of good news. Fellow Republicans have been recorded on a hot mike suggesting that Trump may be crazy. The American news media, as well as commentators from other countries, have voiced serious concerns about Trumps mental health and the threat it poses to global security.

Why are so many psychiatrists and other clinicians afraid to comment about Donald Trumps mental health? What is the role of the Goldwater rule-- which holds that mental health professionals should not attempt to diagnose public figures they have not personally treated-- in their relative silence? Is Donald Trump suffering from symptoms of mental illness? If so, what type of disorder does he exhibit, and what are the consequences for America and the world?

Tucker Carlson: Paul Ryan Lies Republican Party Is Out of Touch, Will Collapse and Splinter (VIDEO) The Gateway Pundit

Tucker Carlson ripped the Open Boarder Democrats and the failed Republican Party on Thursday night.

Carlson argued walls are remarkably effective in controlling who crosses borders. Thats why Democrats oppose one on our border. Not because it wont work but because it will work.

Tucker Carlson called Speaker Paul Ryan a liar.

As one of their colleagues told us just this morning when Nancy Pelosi and Paul Ryan sit down to talk immigration, they arent opponents negotiating, they are allies strategizing Earlier this year we had Speaker Ryan on this show and he assured us Congress would be working hard on funding the border wall. That was a lie. And not the only one GOP leadership has told its voters. Nominally Congress is controlled by Republicans but on immigration Democrats control the agenda. Why is that? Because Paul Ryan and many corporate Republicans agree with them on every substantial point on this.

Carlson warned the end of the Republican Party is not far off if the leadership, including Paul Ryan, does not start listening to their voters.

A party this out of sync with its voters will collapse and splinter. Republicans dont have to agree on every policy detail but there out to be some non-negotiable principles at the center of it all. Borders are real. Citizenship matters. America comes first.

This was an amazing monologue.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Applauded Officers Instead Of Reflecting On Nurse Incident Shadowproof

Emails obtained indicate the Salt Lake City police chief praised officers for their daily work after video of University of Utah nurse Alex Wubbels circulated in the media. Wubbels refused to provide police with a blood sample of an unconscious patient unable to consent to such a release.

Police body cam video was released on August 31 that showed Salt Lake City detective Jeff Payne roughing up and arresting Wubbels. Public furor followed, and internal and civilian review board investigations found that Payne violated numerous departmental policies. The civilian review board concluded he very clearly lost control of his emotions.

Shadowproof obtained documents under Utahs open records law that provide details on the Salt Lake City Police Departments (SLCPD) internal response to the incident. They consist of emails from SLCPD chief Mike Brown and Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Brown.

Despite the broad public backlash against SLCPD, none of the emails released to Shadowproof show Chief Brown verbally reprimanding any officers, or even calling for reflection about how the hospital incident could have happened. (*Note: Shadowproofs original request was for all emails sent from Chief Brown pertaining to the incident.)

Chief Brown apparently adopted a gentle, almost coddling tone, praising officers for all their hard work, instead of the stern diction typical of law enforcement.

An email sent from Chief Brown on September 1the first day after the body cam video was releasedhas a subject line that states, Good work today. The message appears to be a department-wide email to an account called PoliceALL@slcgov.com and informs the recipients that a criminal investigation was launched in regards to the hospital incident. The message then states, I know that each and every day amazing work is done by the women and men of this department to serve the citizens of Salt Lake City.

The message goes on to extol the phenomenal police work that is unfortunately overshadowed by other news in the media space; but is in no way less important to our reputation and caliber of work.

The message closes by saying, Thanks again for all you do.

GOP Rep Says Charlottesville Protest Was a Setup By Left-Wing Agitators The Gateway Pundit

On Thursday, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) told the San Francisco Chronicle that he believes the Charlottesville protests were a setup by left-wing activists.

Washington Examiner reports:

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., said leftists convinced Civil War re-enactors to protest the removal of a civil war statue and pretend to be white nationalists in Charlottesville, Va., last month.

It was a setup for these dumb Civil War re-enactors, Rohrabacher told the San Francisco Chronicle on Thursday.

It was left-wingers who were manipulating them in order to have this confrontation, he added, noting they attempted to put our president on the spot.

He attributed that this conspiracy was headed by a former Hillary and Bernie supporter, who convinced Civil War re-enactors to stage a protest against the removal of a Confederate General Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville.

White supremacist and Unite the Right leader, Jason Kessler, was once reportedly a supporter a former President Obama and the Occupy movement. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center (an organization that is certainly no friend to Conservatives), Kessler revealed his political transformation around November 2016, the same month then candidate Donald Trump won the presidential election.

Southern Poverty Law Center reports:

School Warns Students Not to Chant USA! at Events Could Send Unintended Message The Gateway Pundit

Students at Vista Del Lago High School in Folsom, CA were warned not to chant USA! at events because it could send an unintended message.

Whatever that means.

CBS Sacramento reports:

Controversy erupts at Vista Del Lago High School in Folsom over students chanting USA.

Its a popular way to for students to show pride during sporting events and rallies, but school and district officials are now warning students that the chants could appear inappropriate and intolerant.

School officials worry the chants could come across as intolerant and offensive to some, but parents see it differently, as an expression of pride and acceptance.

The schools principal sent out an email to families Wednesday and relayed the same message to students over the schools P.A. system, clarifying any confusion. She told students and parents that sometimes We can communicate an unintended message. She also said USA chanting is welcome, but it may be best to do it at what she says are appropriate times, like following the national anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance.

Students interviewed were absolutely shocked that chanting USA in their own country could be seen as offensive and intolerant.

Welcome to liberalism, son. Liberalism is a mental disorder with no known cure.

Parents were also upset that their children were told they could only chant USA at certain times that the school says is appropriate.

Who cares if chanting USA offends people. Perhaps the people who are offended should relocate to another country.

This isnt the first time that high school students were reprimanded for their patriotism.

As The Gateway Pundit previously reported, students from one Iowan high school apologized to another Iowan high school when people (refugees) found their red, white and blue attire offensive.

It is way past due for this anti-American liberal brainwashing of our youth to be done away with for good.

REPORT: U.S. Navy Investigating If Nefarious Act Was Behind USS John McCain Crash The Gateway Pundit

The U.S. Navy is investigating if nefarious forces were behind the deadly crash sustained by the USS John S. McCain destroyer. Investigators are zeroing in on where or not hackers infiltrated the ships systems prior to colliding with a merchant vessel.

Foreign Policy Magazine reports:

The military is examining whether compromised computer systems were responsible for one of two U.S. Navy destroyer collisions with merchant vessels that occurred in recent months, Vice Admiral Jan Tighe, the deputy chief of naval operations for information warfare, said on Thursday.

Naval investigators are scrambling to determine the causes of the mishaps, including whether hackers infiltrated the computer systems of the USS John S. McCain ahead of the collision on Aug. 21, Tighe said during an appearance at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

Investigators are not, however, considering the possibility that the USS Fitzgerald collision, which took place on June 17, was the result of hacking.

With the McCain incident happening so close to the Fitzgerald, questions immediately arose about whether computer manipulation could have been the cause of the crash, Tighe said. The Navy has no indication that a cyberattack was behind either of the incidents, but is dispatching investigators to the McCain to put those questions to rest, she said.

Tighe said the Navy plans to use the results of the McCain probe to include a look at cybersecurity in future investigations.

10 U.S. sailors went missing after the USS John McCain collided wth a commercial tanker off the coast of Singapore on Sunday. The first set of videos and photos show extensive damage to the destroyer. All sailors have been pronounced dead.

The Surprising Provision Buried In Sanders Medicare For All Bill Shadowproof

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) released his Medicare For All bill this week with an impressive 16 co-sponsors, and it contained one very interesting section that has been mostly overlooked.

Roughly one-fifth of the bill is dedicated to the creation of a very detailed Medicare Transitional Plan.

Under Sanders bill, Americans would be phased-in to a new Medicare plan over the course of 4 years. Children would be enrolled the first year and the Medicare age would lower to 55. It would then lower by 10 years, each year, for the next three years. After that, everyone would be enrolled.

The Medicare Transitional Plan would be available for anyone who doesnt yet qualify for the new Medicare plan during those 4 years. It would have an actuarial value of 90 percent, meaning individuals would be responsible for 10 percent of the costs of all covered health care benefits. This would be classified as Platinum coverage on the exchanges. It would be better suited for non-seniors and includes a series of subsidies that make it truly affordable for everyone.

A surprising amount of work when into this one section of the bill since, if the legislation was adopted in its entirety, it would exist as an option for 4 years. It is a smart policy addition because if the private insurance market unraveled while the Medicare age was lowered, there should be a backup to provide good coverage for those who cannot yet enroll.

Considering its a very short-term stopgap, it is remarkably well thought out. The section is different in style from the rest of Sanders bill, and during the bills unveiling, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) took credit for its inclusion.

One part of the bill that I worked with my colleagues to put in was the ability for every American to buy into a non-for-profit public option as part of a 4-year transition to get to single-payer in this country, she said.

The Medicare Transitional Plan reads like a standalone bill that was a...

THE WALL: Is Trump Breaking A Key Campaign Promise? [Exclusive statements from Ann Coulter, Roger Stone] The Gateway Pundit

The promise to build a big, beautiful wall on the US-Mexico border continues to be an albatross around the neck of Donald Trumps Administration as establishment Republican and Democratic leaders in Congress continue to push back against his plan for the wall which was the centerpiece of his unprecedented victory in the 2016 election despite unyielding pressure from the same voters that brought him that victory, who still expect now-President Trump to keep his promise.

But after meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to discuss plans to give amnesty to the hundreds of thousands of Dreamers who came to this country illegally as children, rumors began to circulate that President Trump would not insist on funding for the much-needed border wall as a condition for signing the amnesty bill known as the DREAM Act, which is now favored not only by liberals but by RINOs (Republicans in Name Only) like House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc).

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders pushed back against the rumors in a tweet, saying that by no means was the wall off the table in any discussions of whether President Trump would sign the DREAM Act.

And after Ryan, who reportedly claimed during a private dinner earlier this year that only one member of the House actually supports building the wall, Trump took to his Twitter account to reassure his base that the wall which is currently under construction will be built in its entirety.

Hillary Clinton Attacks Middle America, Calls For Elimination of Electoral College (VIDEO) The Gateway Pundit

Failed Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told CNNs Anderson Cooper on Wednesday that it is time to eliminate the Electoral College as she continues her blame tour.

Hillary Clinton despises middle America. She didnt even visit Michigan or Wisconsin during her presidential campaign and now shes openly calling for the elites in New York and California to call Presidential electionsto hell with rural America.

The Electoral College beautifully filtered out fraud during the 2016 presidential election. There are just so many ballots that one county can stuff. While there is much evidence of voter fraud, the EC really helped stop the fraud at County and State lines.

No wonder why Hillary wants it gone.

When Anderson Cooper asked Hillary if the Electoral College should be abolished, she replied in the affirmative, I said that in 2000 after what happened in the 2000 election with Al Gore.

I think it needs to be eliminated, Hillary said of the Electoral College. Id like to see us move beyond it, yes.

Hillary bragged about winning the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes and said she believes in one person, one vote.

Here are the hard cold facts. Donald Trump won 30 States to Hillarys 20 States. Donald Trump won 2,623 Counties to Hillarys 489 Counties. By looking at the map below, you can see that Hillarys cosmopolitan, elitist bias is showing because she wants only the coastal states to determine the outcome of presidential elections.

Here it comes:

Barrasso Requests CBO Score on Sanders Single-Payer Health Care Bill

Today, U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) called on the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to provide a full cost estimate of Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) single-payer health care bill, S. 1804.

In a letter to CBO Director Keith Hall, Barrasso highlights how Senator Sanders bill is not only a government takeover of health care, but would also put financial burdens on the American people.

It is being sold as a new health system paid for completely by the government, with no restrictions and at no cost to the patient. Of course, such a system would be anything but free for the American taxpayer... As the country engages in a serious debate about how best to reform our health care system, it is imperative that the public understand the cost of Senator Sanders Medicare-for-All proposal, wrote Barrasso.
This morning, the Republican Party tweeted this:

That number appeared in a Washington Post editorial a couple of months ago:
... the governments price tag would be astonishing. When Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) proposed a Medicare for all health plan in his presidential campaign, the nonpartisan Urban Institute figured that it would raise government spending by $32trillion over 10 years, requiring a tax increase so huge that even the democratic socialist Mr. Sanders did not propose anything close to it.
Can Sanders rebut this? Can Democrats? We didn't have to find out in 2016 -- but if Sanders had won the Democratic presidential nomination, we would have found out.

Polls showed that Sanders had a double-digit lead over Donald Trump in 2016, and a lot of people think that's all you need to know to decide who should have been the Democrats' nominee. But we never heard any of the GOP's attacks on Sanders in 2016. As I've said before, I think a lot of them would have fallen flat. (He...

Healthcare-- From Otto Von Bismarck To Orange County DownWithTyranny!

Yesterday Bernie released his Medicare-For-All plan. The idea of this kind of coverage goes back a long way. When Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck was unifying Germany in the 1800s, his government came up with a plan for non-profit insurance companies to cover all German citizens. His model was widely discussed in the U.S. and, more or less the one in use not just in Germany but in France, Belgium, Holland, Japan and Switzerland. In the 1930s, New Dealers want dot include universal health care here in the U.S. but conservatives and special interests were too strong and Democrats could never get what they wanted. John Conyers' House bill, which pactically outlaws private health insurance (for anything other than nose jobs and braces, is more radical than Bernie's. This is the statement the Congressional Progressive Caucus released yesterday:
Today, seventeen Senators will join the 117 House Members who have publicly committed to pursuing a bold vision for achieving universal health care by expanding and improving Medicare to cover all Americans. As with the Fight for 15 and the demand for debt-free and tuition-free college, progressives in Congress are responding to the demand for bold action from millions of working Americans, who are fed up with a rigged economy where working hard and playing by the rules isnt enough to get by or get ahead.

We applaud our colleagues in the Senate who have joined with more than 60 percent of the Democratic members of the House to endorse a commonsense vision: health care must be a human right, grounded in justice, access, and dignity-- not profit. Medicare for All means never having to worry about going bankrupt because of a severe illness. It means never watching a parent or grandparent cut their pills in half because they cant afford their medications. It means never letting a health insurance executive get between you and your doctor. And it means that a health insurance corporation will never profit by denying you or a loved one necessary care.

Trump Insider Roger Stone Set To Testify Before House Intelligence Committee The Gateway Pundit

Political operative Roger Stone will testify in private before the House Intelligence Committee later this month, as part of the ongoing investigation into Russias alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The Hill reports:

Although I have again called for an open public hearing in the interest of full transparency, the hearing is currently scheduled to be in a closed session, Stone said in a statement. I have again asked for immediate release of the transcripts so that there will be no confusion or misinformation about my testimony.

Stone said that all 20 members of the committee will be present at the Sept. 26 interview. The panel, which is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible ties to Trump associates, did not immediately return a request for comment.

Stone has previously publicized a scheduled appearance before the committee, in July, that never materialized. Through an attorney, Stone told reporters that interview was delayed because the committee wasnt ready. The committee then declined to confirm the details of the interview.

Stone joins an ever-growing list of Trump supporters subject to Congressional testimony. Last week, Donald Trump Jr. testified in front of Senate investigators. Key details of Donald Trump Jr.s meeting with Senate investigators leaked shortly after. According to the New York Times, Trump Jr. took the Russia meeting to gauge Hillary Clintons fitness for office.

New York Times reports:

A copy of Mr. Trumps statement was obtained by The New York Times.

The acknowledgment by the presidents eldest son that he intended to seek legal counsel after the meeting suggests that he knew, or at least suspected, that accepting potentially damaging information about a rival campaign from a foreign country raised thorny legal issues.

What are journalists for in the age of Trump? WORDVIRUS

What are journalists for in the age of Trump?

(Credit: Getty/Drew Angerer)

The shortcomings of traditional political journalism have been visible for some time. But the unprecedented presidency of Donald Trump has graphically exposed journalisms weaknesses. In 2016, before the November election, Jay Rosen, Professor of Journalism at New York University, sat down with journalist Kathy Kiely at the Uncharted Festival of Ideas in Berkeley to talk about the right frame for interpreting press coverage of the presidential campaign. Their conclusions hold just as true for journalists after the election, when the stakes have proven so much higher.

Jay Rosen is the author of PressThink, a blog about journalisms ordeals in the age of the Web, which he launched in 2003. In 1999, Yale University Press published his book, What Are Journalists For, which was about the rise of the civic journalism movement. He was the co-publisher, with Arianna Huffington, of OfftheBus.Net, which allowed readers to participate in the Huffington Posts election coverage in 2008. Rosen writes and speaks frequently about new media and the predicament of the press in a time of rapid transformation. He is also a frequent critic of the national press and its coverage of politics.

Kathy Kiely is a Washington-based journalist and journalism teacher with extensive experience in covering politics and in working across media platforms. She has served as an editor for Bloomberg Politics, the Sunlight Foundation, and at the National Journal, its website and for CBS News.

Judge in Arpaio Case Wants to Hear Arguments Before Vacating Former Sheriffs Conviction The Intercept

When the Founding Fathers created the presidential pardon power, they likely had a few ideas about how that authority could be used. Clemency might be granted in a show of mercy, or to undo a miscarriage of justice. Or maybe the president would want to pardon anti-government rebels in an attempt to restore peace to the republic, much like President Andrew Johnson would do after the Civil War.

But what the founders could not possibly have envisioned was that a president would pardon an elected official for ignoring a court order to stop violating constitutional protections enshrined in the Bill of Rights. Those rights, after all, did not exist until two years after the Constitution came into force.

Or so goes the argument by civil rights groups that say, for this reason, that President Donald Trumps controversial pardon of former Sheriff Joe Arpaio cannot stand.

And the judge involved in the case is willing to hear them out.

We are not aware of a single case in our nations history where the president pardoned an elected official for disobeying a court order to stop violating constitutional rights, said Ron Fein, legal director at Free Speech for People, which this week filed a friend-of-the-court brief challenging the pardon. With this pardon, Trump has pushed our country into uncharted territory.

Trump last month pardoned Arpaio, the former sheriff of Arizonas Maricopa County, for a contempt conviction that stemmed from a 2011 racial-profiling lawsuit. In 2013, a federal judge ordered Arpaio to stop his offices practice of unfairly singling out Latino drivers for special scrutiny in violation of the Fifth Amendment. But Arpaios deputies continued to racially profile Latinos, and in July, U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton found Arpaio in criminal contempt of court, ruling that he had willfully violated the order. He faces up to six months in jail.

Immediately following the pardon, Arpaio asked Bolton to vacate his conviction. Instead, she canceled his October sentencing hearing and ordered the former sheriff and the Department of Justice, which is prosecuting the case, to submit briefs on why she should or should not grant Arpaios request.

The Justice Department on Monday said it agrees with the pardon and urged the court to vacate the conviction. On the same day, two groups separately filed briefs opposing Arpaios...

Trump Slams Crackpot Bernie Sanders For Pushing Single-Payer Healthcare Plan: I WILL VETO The Gateway Pundit

Socialist crackpot Bernie Sanders rolled out his plans for a single payer health care bill on Wednesday and launched a campaign to pass it as law.

President Trump slammed Bernie Sanders on Thursday calling single-payer health care a curse on the U.S. and its people and said he would veto the bill.

Fox News reported on Bernie Sanders single payer plans:

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday officially unveiled his single-payer health care bill, launching a campaign to pass it that already has exposed tensions in the Democratic Party as 2020 presidential hopefuls rally behind the plan and congressional leaders hold back support.

The Medicare for All plan from Sanders, a Vermont independent and sage of the American political left, is backed by 15 co-sponsors.

The list includes several Democratic senators thought to be eyeing a 2020 White House bid Elizabeth Warren, of Massachusetts; Kamal Harris, of California; Cory Booker, of New Jersey; and Kirsten Gillibrand, of New York.

In the second tweet Trump said he would veto, I told Republicans to approve healthcare fast or this would happen. But dont worry, I will veto because I love our country & its people.

Journalist Victoria Law joins the Beyond Prisons podcast to discuss her work with imprisoned women and her book, Resistance Behind Bars: The Struggles Of Incarcerated Women.

Law talks about how and why she wrote the book, which centers womens struggles against incarceration and describes womens resistance and organizing in prison. From this perspective, she also discusses the challenges and importance of compiling testimony from women on the inside, as well as the risks women have to take to speak out.

She gives examples of the different kinds of resistance women engage in, and how their struggles to obtain education and access to programming and treatment are often overlooked examples of resisting the conditions of their confinement.

We also discuss how criminal justice journalism traditionally relies on narratives provided by law enforcement and how incarcerated women are often perceived as untrustworthy. Law provides insight on the history of womens imprisonment and explains how reform has evolved systems of surveillance and control for women over time.

BOOM! Top Democrat Becerra Is Caught Giving Cops a Fake Server on Imran Awan Scandal The Gateway Pundit

Cuomos Free Tuition Plan is a Racist Snub to Working-Class Students The Indypendent

Its the start of the school year and like many of my fellow students, I am holding high aspirations for the upcoming semester. Yet, at the same time, I have an aching feeling of dread deep in the pit of my stomach.

Normally, at the beginning of a semester, an overwhelming feeling of anxiety about how I am going to pay for my classes at Queens College overcomes me. I wonder if I will qualify for financial aid and debate if I can even afford to take time off from work so that I will be able to qualify for full-time financial aid. Every time the semester starts, I notice that I spend more time stressing over money to afford school than I do over my grades. I stress about another semester skipping meals, missing rent and losing sleep. Luckily our most honorable and gracious governor, Andrew Cuomo, has come to my rescue!

At first, I, like many of my friends, celebrated the news that New York State colleges were going to become tuition free. It was unbelievable news, something I have been fighting for years.

Three years ago, as an undergraduate student organizer at LaGuardia Community College with People Power Movement, I helped organize a petition drive that collected over 500 student signatures demanding an end to tuition hikes, as well as a more free and democratic state college system. We dropped the petitions off at the governors offices in Midtown Manhattan and held a rally in front of the building.

So, when I heard Cuomo announce his Excelsior program for free college tuition at a press conference with Bernie Sanders at my old alma mater, LaGuardia, no less my first thought was that the governor finally found the time to read our petition. It looked like all our sacrifice and our hard work was not in vain.

What looked at first to be a revolutionary plan to change the lives of millions of New Yorkers, ended up becoming a plan to further marginalize millions of our states poorest and most vulnerable residents.

But a part of me was suspicious. We native New Yorkers can smell bullshit a mile away. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably isnt. As the old saying goes, the devil is in the details.

In the days after the governor made his announcement, the grimy details of the plan began to slowly leak out. Each drop began to look much worse than the last and my optimism slowly died. What looked at first to be a revolutionary plan to change the lives of millions of New Yorkers, ended up becoming a plan to further marginalize millions of our states poorest and most vulnerable residents. What was supposed to be a plan to bridge divides, will most likely widen those divides. What was supposed to be...

Gateway Pundits Lucian Wintrich to Speak at Upcoming Berkeley Free Speech Week The Gateway Pundit

The Gateway Pundits own Lucian Wintrich will be speaking at the upcoming four day Milo Yiannopoulos-led Berkeley Free Speech Week, which begins September 24th.

Dozens of high profile speakers from Mike Cernovich to former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon to Ann Coulter and esteemed sociologist and political scientist Charles Murray will be speaking to packed crowds.

Wintrich tweeted that he will be tackling the left and the rights relationship to arts and culture on the first day, which has been dubbed Feminism Awareness Day. The other three days are titled Zuck 2020, Islamic Peace and Tolerance Day, and Mario Savio is Dead, respectively.

Lucian will discuss various facets of the current political landscape from arts and culture to the media:

My talk will center around how the left has continuously stifled expression, and how the conservative movement is bring it back; I plan on going through the evolution of the two movements and discussing how we ended up where we are today. The mere fact that the left is trying to shut down an event with such a wide array of viewpoints and speakers points out the hypocrisy behind their ideology.

Commenting on how he hopes the event to go, Wintrich stated:

I think the event will be an incredible success. Both the organizers and Berkeley security have reassured me that things will go down without a hitch, although it will be interesting to see how Anti-First Amendment groups like ANTIFA handle it. Ill be speaking on Sunday, the kick off day, to an incredible lineup of media pioneers, conservative firebrands, intellectuals, and a few folks I had to Google and am still confused by.

The event will go from the 24th to the 27th of September.

After Massive Giveaways to Industry, Mining Executives Will Spend Big at Trumps D.C. Hotel The Intercept

The chief executives of some of the largest coal and mining companies in the country have chosen the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., for a private conference next month, according to documents obtained by The Intercept.

The hotel is a natural venue for such an event. The host of the conference, the National Mining Association, an industry lobby group, has won a string of policy victories and carve-outs from the Trump administration and its Republican allies in Congress.

The NMA board of directors meeting, which takes place October 3-4, is yet the latest example of a special interest group spending thousands of dollars on a property owned directly by the Trump family. The Trump International charges over $800 a night for the days the mining event is scheduled.

President Trump has refused to divest from the Trump Organization, so money spent at the presidents D.C. hotel will make it into the presidents pocket, says Brendan Fischer, an election law expert with the Campaign Legal Center.

The National Mining Association or any other lobbying group has likely concluded that spending money at the Trump International Hotel in D.C. is a solid way of currying favor with the administration and that spending money anywhere else runs the risk of offending our very sensitive president, Fischer added.

The NMA did not respond to a request for comment. While NMA does not make its board of directors public, tax disclosures from previous years reveal that the board has included chief executives from mining firms such as Peabody Energy, Drummond Company, and Cloud Peak Energy, among other major mining interests.

The event will include a discussion of policy strategy, along with speeches and meetings with members of the administration and other key decision-makers.

The evening reception on the rooftop will be the first reception since the 2016 elections and will provide an excellent opportunity to meet the new members of Congress, build on our relationships, and share our perspectives with our guests from Congress and federal agencies, the invitation notes.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, a close ally of the coal and mining industry, is scheduled to address the group of coal executives at the hotel.

Zinke has been widely praised by industry and assailed by environmentalists and conservationists. Earlier this year, he not only repealed the Obama administrations moratorium on new coal leases on public lands but reduced the amount of royalties that coal mining firms pay to the federal government.

Coal firms have seized upon the new rules and production levels throughout the country, particularly in...

Most Americans Want A Path To Citizenship For The DREAMers-- But Not House Republicans DownWithTyranny!

It passed unanimously in the Senate Monday and then passed unanimously in the House Tuesday-- it... a resolution "condemning the violence at the white nationalist rally in Virginia last month and urging President Trump to speak out against racist hate groups.
It calls Heyers killing a domestic terrorist attack and denounces White nationalists, White supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, and other hate groups but does not single out left-wing counterprotesting groups such as antifa-- short for anti-fascist-- for equivalent opprobrium in the way Trump did.

The authors of the legislation purposely introduced it as a joint resolution, which is sent for a presidents signature, rather than as a simple or concurrent resolution, which are not.

The resolution calls on Trump to speak out against hate groups that espouse racism, extremism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and White supremacy and also use all resources available to the President and the Presidents Cabinet to address the growing prevalence of those hate groups in the United States.

It also calls on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to investigate thoroughly all acts of violence, intimidation, and domestic terrorism by White supremacists, White nationalists, neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, and associated groups and to improve the reporting of hate crimes to the FBI.

Age at First Marriage Still Rising in the US bensozia

Median age at first marriage is still rising in the US, up more than 2 years in the past decade, to 29.9 for men and 27.9 for women. This is happening for all groups, including Mormons and Evangelical Christians.

Which makes me think again that sometimes giant socio-economic/cultural forces override all our choices and beliefs and sense of agency. I mean, people think they get married when they fall in love with the right person, and it feels very personal and idiosyncratic. But those numbers keep rising.

FLASHBACK: Bernie Sanders Says Medicaid For Everybody Would Bankrupt The Nation (VIDEO) The Gateway Pundit

This week, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) unveiled his Medicare-for-all legislation with nearly half of the Democrat Senate roster behind him. Sanders was not always in favor of blanket coverage programs, warning in a 1987 interview that a similar proposal presented this week, would bankrupt the United States.

NTK Network reports:

When Sanders was mayor of Burlington, he filmed a show called Bernie Speaks with the Community. During one 1987 episode about the American health care system, he said that giving everyone Medicaid for all would be too much of a financial burden for the United States to bear.

One of the points that we understand and I think was reinforced when we went to Canada, Sanders told Dr. Miltion Terris, Number one, you want to guarantee that all people have access to healthcare as you do in Canada.

Sanders continued, doubting that Americas system could handle such a change.

But I think what we understand is that unless we change the funding system and the control mechanism in this country to do that, he said. For example, if we expanded Medicaid [to] everybody. Give everybody a Medicaid card we would be spending such an astronomical sum of money that, you know, we would bankrupt the nation.

This week, Sen. Sanders unveiled his Medicare-for-all legislation.

The Gateway Pundit has previously reported on the falsehoods pushed by the lawmaker.

At a Care Not Cuts rally in July, Senator Bernie Sanders compared the GOP health care plan to one of the worst things to ever occur on American soil 9/11.

WATCH: James Comey Threatened With Subpoena Over Hillary Clinton Email Investigation The Gateway Pundit

Former FBI Director James Comey has a lot of explaining to do. After testifying he decided to exonerate Hillary Clinton after her July meeting with the FBI, a recent report suggests the move was decided much earlier in the year. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina is threatening to subpoena Comey over the Clinton email investigation.

Video credit: Fox News

Fox News reports:

Sen. Lindsey Graham threatened Thursday to subpoena James Comey, in the latest escalation in Republicans effort to haul back the former FBI director to Capitol Hill so he can address alleged discrepancies in his testimony about the Hillary Clinton email case.

Hes coming one way or the other, Graham, R-S.C., told Fox News Happening Now.

Asked if he would subpoena Comey should he not testify voluntarily, Graham said: I would, yes.

Comey is back under the congressional microscope after details emerged of interviews with FBI staffers suggesting the former bureau boss drafted an exoneration statement for Clinton weeks before interviewing her and ultimately recommending against charges in the email case.

The White House accused former FBI Director James Comey of false testimony Monday and suggested the DOJ look at whether he perjured himself.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked in a briefing Monday to respond to Steve Bannons 60 Minutes comment that Trump firing Comey...
